Similar experience for me to Tommyknocker. The docking computer mostly works fine if you follow those rules and I've used in hundreds of times without issue.

Until last Sunday... when it decided to get stuck on something in the docking bay... by the time I noticed the loitering count down it was too late and the guns had taken out my Python and the full load of gold inside! 5m credits worth of ouch.

Might very well be the size of your ship. I know I most likely won't use it with anything over an asp as it would set me back far to far if it failed like that.

Docking Computer Mishap......

Funny Story So.....

Been tooling around in my Type 7 Bus for the weekend and decide to test out a Docking Computer.

I've never had one have any mishaps before and want to see how good/bad it does. So, I load it up, get some cargo about 600k's worth nothing too expensive, may as well make the trip worth it right?

As I start to close in on the station the docking computer kicks in, I notice an Orca is already heading in and I'm pointing at a steep downward angle to the mailslot, which makes me a little nervous but I sit back to watch the show. Hand off the joystick and sipping on some coffee, "This should be cake......" I you not, as I lean back in my chair, I suddenly hear the Engine Boost kick in!!! My Type 7's heading right for the Orca's Aft Section and doesn't seem to be slowing down! It hits the Orca's Aft section, my shields immediately go down down COLLISION!!!!!! I immediately toss my coffee on the floor, the Orca's turning to starboard but before I can get control an Anaconda comes shooting out of the other side and just NAILS ME Broadside!! EJECT EJECT EJECT!!!! Booooooooom!!! Not sure if the Anaconda or Orca survived but I didn't lol.

1.7Mill Test = Docking Computer Failed.

Do not use docking computers on heavy cargo ships.

lol....

It may have not been a boost but a sudden full throttle, however it did seem to be going much faster than a normal full throttle.

A bit of a boring, but educational exercise:

Dock in a busy high population station and position yourself for a good view of the 'mail slot' from inside... and observe for a good chunk of time. Just hang out there, and watch the NPC ships enter and leave.. after a while you'll get a pretty good idea how these NPC ships AI work (or don't work). Then realize that the same AI is what takes over your ship for auto-docking. With this knowledge, one is likely to quickly sell their docking computer :) I think the laser turrets in these stations aren't made to enforce docking rules.. but rather to purge screwy NCP ships stuck in bad situations. LOL

I've never had any problems with the docking computer, as long as I position myself a bit wawy from the mailslot and set speed to 0 then.

Only problem is when the ship skids around on the pad at landing.

Were you in Open mode?
.
I occassionally use one; 99% of the time in solo mode. I've never had a problem except the occassional hard landing. But, I don't think I would ever use one in Open play because of the unpredictability of human pilots.
.
Good luck

Apparently the docking computer works better with smaller vessels, but can be a horrific nightmare with larger ships ... I guess this is more evidence to support that theory

Make the most of the Docking Computer

So I engaged the DC about 4km out. Legged it to the galley, made two fried

egg sandwiches and a mug of tea.

Got back to see my ship gently land on my designated pad.

What do you do whilst your docking computer works it's magic.
