The docking computer was something I loved to use until I got my Eagle and realised that its taking up a vital internal slot. Got rid of it and since then I've never looked back. Sure docking manually can be a pain (especially finding the correct docking bay) but, after time it does indeed become so easy u never have to think too much about it. Of course you do get the odd surprise like, not having requested docking clearance, or, not having your landing gear down..lol I've even landed too heavily and really screwed things up. The wait for the auto dock is a bit annoying id say..

Turn off damage on docking computer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just lost my ship, and 100 tons of gold because the damn docking computer slammed me to decked. Granted, I was critically low on most stats, but, there's no way that it should slam me to the deck. This has just started since about the 1.04 version I believe. I lost half of my money. So far the game has been nothing but a rehash of Wing Commander: Privateer. The main difference is;

1. It had a better story and you had a better sense of wonder exploring new systems because they were different and new. This has no story and no real way to interact others properly to create a story.

2. I have never is my life (unless I might have have a few) fallen asleep at a game. This game made me fall asleep. Wow.

3. Lighten up on the client/server communications. I understand that you want a centralized server/synched universe, but some of us have crappy internet providers where, NO, you don't have a choice. I have a 0.02% packet loss and this causes numerous disconnects from the server. I could accept this with the exception that in previous builds, this what not an issue. It has gotten progressively worse. I believe it may be due to telemetry data collection, but that is only because of the extra data and timing issues.

4. I need an update on planet landings. I need something to do when I get to where I'm going or there's no sense in going. When it's coming out of your pocket, that "Because it's there" crap don't cut it. There has to be something else to exploring other than the money. And NO, I don't mean another spherically textured mapped object that I can circle. I certainly understand the hurdles of incorporating planetary landings. I don't expect it to work anytime soon, but I DO expect some updates. This was a major promised expansion.

Flame all you want. I like this game. It has tremendous promise and that's why I chose to support it, but this bird is not fully mission capable. I believe that fixing the communications is the quickest way to get this game to "release". I paid for a beta and I understand that. I still believe this game has amazing potential, but not until some of these issues are addressed.

If anyone can look into the first issue, I'd really appreciate it.

P.S. Sorry if this is not in the correct forum. I just lost half of my money and I don't really care. I'm sure that there is someone out there who is professional enough to put this in the appropriate area. If you read this and do, I thank you :)

DC Love...

I love my Docking Computer...

I do find that it operates much better in solo than it does in multi...

To me it's like having a luxury on board. I can set my next destination while it's docking or get a sandwich or go do whatever pit-stop thing I need to do in real life while it's landing.

Landing is a chore, no matter if you are good at it or not. If you have a coral-tunnel condition as I do, then the docking computer makes a few less buttons to push for a very common thing the ship needs to do.

We have no "air traffic controller" and the game's history being based in some far off future, a simple docking computer makes sense to be available... if there were a take-off computer, I think I'd pass on having both and keep the DC.

But then again "I'm a newby" ;)

Space Time :D

Docking Computer screws up quite a lot.
In a Python when you try to land on an outpost, 80% of the time it just hangs in space doing nothing until the countdown goes down.
When you approach the station in a certain angle, no matter in what ship, and then activate it, it just hovers at one of the corners, navigating around a lot, but not landing.
When dropping down on the landing pad, in 90% of landings it just scratches around on the pad for 10 seconds before finding the right spot. Sometimes it doesnt at all.
In a few cases in really heavy ships it tries to land the ship on its nose. not very effective.

Docking computers need quality levels too, with an A device being unfailable and error free.

I just want to get my second post so's I can get more forum features...

... however, you've touched on a subject that I feel strongly about.

My opinion is that the piloting issues within the game need to be strengthened and not eased. In other words, I'd like to see piloting to require more personal skill than it does now. Flight is far and away my favourite part of the game. So I am 110% against ever installing one of those docking computer fiascos in any ship I pilot, and I certainly distrust any flight computer that has a "one model for everyone" design. If your ship is expensive, C-3P0 had better not be at the helm.

Elite does have a long way to go. It does exceed the standard from the original game(s) though, and I clearly recall back then the flight computer dropping into "kill the humans" mode when making certain approaches to the little flying toaster stations. Some things never change.

While not helping the OP, the mention of the Docking computer killing reminds me of my first experience of one in the original Elite on the BeeB [yep, i'm old].

I had finally saved up to get one [just to speed up the landings]. Yippee, I thought, loaded fully, lets go.
Well everything was going fine until I met a AI ship LEAVING at the same time I was arriving...... I hadn't checked how to turn off the DC and it plowed me into the other ship...
Bang goes I, bang goes "him".

I was then wanted too....................................:S

Docking Computer just lost me everything

Ok so ive been playing since xmas and loving the game. Just a few days ago managed to save up enough for my Cobra MkIII. Kitted it out with cargo expansions and was down to my last 150k. Loaded up my hold with Byrillium, basically used all my credits, and set off to a system where I knew I could make a tidy profit. Frameshifted to the station, manouvered to the entrance and activated my docking computer while I went to the toilet. Imagine my horror when I return to find my ship loitering in the enterance with 3 seconds left of my warning. I quickly try to take over from the docking computer and fly away from the enterance but im too late, the station opens fire and I lose my new cobra, all my cargo and all my credits. How is this possible? How can the docking computer be so dumb??

I now have 1000 credits left. Its going to take me ages to build up my savings again, im am literally this close to quitting.

Surely this is a bug? Is there any way to petition to get my credits back?

That sux, but its not the first time such a thing has happened.

do not quit, if u need it then add me ingame and i get give u some cargo

Its fine, I took the loan and have my Cobra back. Its the fact I have basically zero credits left now. Cant buy anything to trade with and got to grind from the start again. Extremely frustrating. Surely this shouldn't happen with the docking computer and it should dock me safely??

You could raise a ticket on it, and then pray!

Make sure you tag it as 'unable to play' or something equally important, and support should take notice.

But the real point is, never leave the game to run unattended, anything could and does happen...

PS Docking Computers are very buggy - don't be lazy, dock manually, or supervise!

not sure if it is ment to be so unstable, but fact is that if u use it, u better not be far away from the keyboard
