Its fine, I took the loan and have my Cobra back. Its the fact I have basically zero credits left now. Cant buy anything to trade with and got to grind from the start again. Extremely frustrating. Surely this shouldn't happen with the docking computer and it should dock me safely??

Have you seen how many NPCs get themselves blown up while trying to dock? I can't imagine looking at them and wishing one of those was flying my ship!

docking computer is not to make docking "easier", it's for lazy people who dont want to do it million times over and over.

i use docking computer in trading runs, it lets me tab to forums or do something else, however i always leave part of game visible so i can notice if something is going wrong. the only times when i had trouble with it was if you let it take control at extreme angle against letterbox while being close to station or if you forget to completely reduce speed to 0 (happened to me once, got wake up call when the ship rammed station wall and was like omg : o..didnt have enough speed to kill me on impact tho =p )

I flew a T9 in beta it's not terribly hard to dock. I scraped my shields a bit going thru the access port the first few times but soon got the hang of it.

I just learned how to dock a T9 and it was nice, difficult, brand new, like i had never dock ship, fancy the heavy feeling, lost my first insurance on the first undock because i tought i could ram a NPC sidewinder at 40 through the letter box, maybe it was because i was too slow but the siewinder ended up gettin me stuck in the letterbox while my shield were slowly goin off... :(

How can the docking computer be so dumb??

No, you should be asking 'How could I be so dumb as to fly without sufficient insurance and put my trust in a Docking computer'

Learn to fly, learn to dock, you will get little sympathy in these parts for you loss.

Hmm, that's a habit I'll need to break - ever since I got my Python I've been going out of my way to ram dumb NPCs in smaller ships in the slot...

It's already been said, but never trust a docking computer. This has been a 'feature' of every Elite game, IIRC, which is why I gave up on them. Plus the fact that docking is easier in ED than in the previous 3 games (or at least so it feels to me). Even getting through the letterbox isn't hard, at least until you get a T7 or bigger at which point it becomes significantly more difficult to thread the eye of the needle at >75% throttle...

Good luck with your new (replacement) Cobra, but dump the DC and get a Shield Bank instead :)

I would ticket it. The docking computer should be a fail-safe method to land. If it gets you destroyed, it's buggy and maybe you get your stuff back. At least try it.

Docking computer is not 100% reliable and never has been in any of the Elite series. It's not a win button. Don't leave your ship unattended.

Yes, you should never trust a docking computer - but let's not be quite so hard on OP, eh? There's nothing stupid about assuming that something will work in the way it's intended.

As far as flying without insurance goes, though - yeah, you'll get no sympathy from me on that one.

Ok so ive been playing since xmas and loving the game. Just a few days ago managed to save up enough for my Cobra MkIII. Kitted it out with cargo expansions and was down to my last 150k. Loaded up my hold with Byrillium, basically used all my credits, and set off to a system where I knew I could make a tidy profit. Frameshifted to the station, manouvered to the entrance and activated my docking computer while I went to the toilet. Imagine my horror when I return to find my ship loitering in the enterance with 3 seconds left of my warning. I quickly try to take over from the docking computer and fly away from the enterance but im too late, the station opens fire and I lose my new cobra, all my cargo and all my credits. How is this possible? How can the docking computer be so dumb??

I now have 1000 credits left. Its going to take me ages to build up my savings again, im am literally this close to quitting.

Surely this is a bug? Is there any way to petition to get my credits back?
1) Always leave about 10%-15% in the bank to cover your insurance costs. (don't spend your last credit on cargo of outfitting)
2) Always be ready to take over from the docking computer. (Technology is not fool proof)
Sorry you had to learn these things the hard way.

I'll just mention another. NEVER run out of fuel. (prepare to self-destruct if you do).

He said he had enough for insurance you bunch of illiterates. OP don't let these people get you down. Docking computer has its kinks, but what are you going to land your own ship like some lowly peasant?

Dear god. Op. Don't listen to these idiots. . I see where you are coming from. A docking computer should do just that. .. dock. If it doesn't do the job why have it in game. It's obviously broken. To all the white knights and fanbois, please please grow up. The system IS broken, telling the op that he shouldn't trust a part of the game is . .

These idiots didn't lose their ship going afk

You might want to look up the definition of that word, I do not think I means what you think it means.

Leaving spacedock without insurance and leaving a docking computer unattended. Wow. I think you should hand in your pilot's licence at the next outpost.

I keep the docking computer for comedy reasons. I bought it for a bit of nostalgia, and to see if it still played the Blue Danube. To be fair, the only thing that makes it completely useless is the fact that it aborts as soon as anything red shows up on the scanner (hardpoints deplored or not). That's probably what happened to the OP.

I don't even really understand what purpose docking computers fulfil. Manual docking is easy and much quicker. I can only think that docking computers are used by pilots who always seem to need the latrine during docking - is it a weak bladder thing?

I use docking computer religiously. It lets me sit back and enjoy whatever movie/TV show I'm watching while trading for a couple of minutes. But I'd never leave my PC while it's docking my ships.
