Today my Lakon Type 9 was shot twice at the port because the docking computer was ramming my ship against the station...

If you have a pricey ship and a lot of cargo, never walk away from your computer while the DC is landing your ship. Once I was landing a Lakon 9 with 440 units of gold in it. I turned on the DC and then had to go do something for 10 mins or so. When I got back 10 minutes later the ship was only landing just then and with 9% hull left. I came razor close to a mistake that would have cost me many millions and would have put back at the beginning After that I never left the DC to it's own devices.

The dev's should have created an autopilot for interstellar travel. You know, just like the autopilot from the games we played 20 years ago. It sure was nice to lock in a destination, hit autopilot, then watch the wonder of the galaxy flash by your canopy.

One word: Crew.

Taken from the Crew design proposal:

  • Each ship has a maximum number of crew slots for each type
    • When crew slots are filled the commander has access to a number of benefits based on crew type:
    • Gunner: turret weapons are more accurate and can switch targets to make opportune attacks; the more gunners available, the more turret weapons can gain these benefits at the same time
    • Engineer: damaged modules will be repaired; the more engineers available the more modules can be repaired at the same time.
    • Pilot: the commander can initiate defensive manoeuvres, chase target and travel to location orders
    • Marine: marines will automatically engage ship invaders (requires ship internals update)

There will in other words be an "autopilot" just not a computer doing it (unless the crew is a robot that is). This also means that smaller ships that doesn't have the possibility for additional crew will still be controlled manually. Bigger ships will on the other hand be able to hire a pilot to take care of the flying if that is what you want.

I always engage the DC when im in front of the station and except for twice it tried to land nose first with my type 9 (quick reverse thrust to disengage DC then land manually), never had a problem, i do keep an eye on it
And as for why i use a DC, i can land all the ships currently in game with no problems, im not in a rush, so i let it take the strain while i sit back and drink my coffee

Hey

I was playing for a few hours and made enough money to buy a docking computer but the first time I used it, it crashed my ship into the side of a space station! I didn't have enough credits left to afford my old ship, so back to the beginning again.

Feeling a bit peeved about this

Bryan:mad:

Hope you ticked this, as per dev requests, so it can be fixed?

That puppy autodock computer

I'm going to use puppy so I don't get censored here.

How is that puppy computer almost made me loose 400k worth of cargo? 4 times!!!
One time it left me dancing on the entrance and I was about 10 sec of getting shot at for loitering

Second time the motherpuppy autodock was just doing backflips against the dock wall. When I looked at the screen my shields were out and my hull 20%

Third time similar to the second but with a cobra that I imagine was on autodock too.

Fourth time it was just puppying around the entrance so I went to manually dock but it turns out I can't diminish the puppy speed because autodock kicks in.

I ended up selling the autodock thing.

Ok now seriously. Is there a way to turn off the autodock when you are really not going to use it?

I got it so I can stand up, grab a snack or a soda or read my email but now I know I can't trust the thing.

May I ask why you still kept using the docking computer when you already lost cargo a few times before? It happened to me once, loitering but I was around to take over... so I do not use it anymore... easy peasy.

You can turn it off in the modules window, it's at the bottom usually.

Thanks did not know that

Thought it was a temporary bug or glitch and would not happen again, but fourth is a charm right?

Ok, lets agree on fourth is a charm... lol

Reminds me when I got charged for loitering and I was like, is it me? lol

That's funny. I use the docking computer all the time and have never had an issue with it. I mean manual docking is so much quicker but at least I get a chance to read the forum when my ship is on auto dock.

I have more of an issue with mother puppy NPCs sitting in front of the letter slot

I probably would have ditched the docking computer after the first time......

assuming I would ever buy one in the first place :D

I bought it for comodity now and then. I enter stations hauling puppy ass. So if u see a type 9 coming to a station at full speed clear off :D Im not responsable for damages

The problem with the docking computer is that it seems to be using the flight AI from NPCs. Everyone knows how silly they act in the dock.

I remember the original Elite also let you crash occasionally when using the docking computer. You'd better align up roughly first, before using it, to make its job easier.

That is incorrect my friend. 2 out of the 4 times I was totally aling with the entrance (one of them I was actually at the entrance) and autodock started dancing around so it doesnt necesary means that it will work

Docking computer is for pu...., eee.. puppys!:D Is easy to dock, and autodock is killing all fun.

Maybe yours running on windows 95? Maybe you need update? :D
