Easy solution. Engage brain before cargo scoop.

The issue here is that it is not easy to abid laws where they are not stated anywhere.

The rep system should be explained somewhere. After all, the goal of rules is to PREVENT people breaking them, which is hard to obtain if you hide them :)

The rep system frustrates me to no end. I've been working for weeks to get my rep up with the feds, but still at neutral. If I were committing crimes I could understand the slow climb to allied, but I've been faithful, even serving in the federal military to the point that I'm a Chief Petty Officer. But I still have neutral rep... I'm beginning to think rep is probably buggy at this point. Been thinking about ticketing it for a while now. Maybe when i return to federation space and grind for rep without success again, then I'll probably ticket it.

Sorry to hear you get screwed over like that though, Lindonius. But bare in mind that any and all abandoned cargo is 99% likely to be labeled as stolen, and should be treated as such.

But surely it must fall under the umbrella of salvaged goods? if someone comes to claim it, maybe we should get a percentage of current market value as salvage fee, at worst

Lol I love these "holier than thou" responses. Like people somehow think they're immune to making mistakes.

I left 16 palladium canisters last night because I'm allied with the Feds and a few credits not worth the risk.

Your response sounds like the average criminal. "We all make mistakes". No we all don't.

If you have scooped stuff from space it will be listed as STOLEN in your cargo manifest on the right side panel.

No, it doesn't. It falls under the umbrella of "stolen". Which is why you get fined, shot, or a bad rep if you're caught with it.

If a thief has a truck filled with stolen TVs, and you manage to mug the thief and take his truck from him - the TVs are STILL STOLEN. If the thief sees you coming and just dumps them on the sidewalk, they are STILL STOLEN.

...seriously not understanding why this is such an odd concept...

If FD adds some sort of salvage permit one day, then this will change. But at the moment, that's the law and it's a) not a secret and b) completely easy to follow. So either commit the crime and get away with it, or get caught and take the consequences.

commit the crime and get away with it

Funny thing actually, on my latest rare run I didn't notice until the last leg of the trip I still had onionhead and tarach spice in my cargo from yesterday. Docked with half a dozen stations where they'd been considered illegal, didn't get scanned once.

I'm a bit annoyed. It took me WEEKS of trading missions and delivering messages to get to allied with the feds. I got bored with trading, decided to try my hand at bounty hunting, shot down a few wanted pirates, one dropped some gold cannisters. "OOH I'll have those!" I thought. Scooped up the cargo, subsequently got scanned by the authority vessels in the same instance (it was a USS not near a station), instant fine, instant wanted....instant UNFRIENDLY status with Feds. Yes weeks upon weeks of work to get to allied and only one minor misdemeanor for that allied status to change to unfriendly. Am I gonna grind for weeks to regain my status? Nope. Time for an ED break. Hopefully they'll revamp it soon.

It's an old joke that some it up and uses a lot of asterixs

A man goes into a pub in a small town and, for whatever reason, gets introduced to the clientele. There’s Farmer Jack, Barman Jim, Maurice “Dancer” and Sheep******* John. After a few pints, the visitor’s curiosity gets the better of him and he asks John what’s with the nickname.

“See this pub?” asks John, "I built it, but they don’t call me Pubbuilder John? I’m the local doctor, I saved Barman Jim’s life once when he choked on a peanut, but they don’t call me Lifesaver John. Every year, I supply a huge Christmas tree for the village green, but the don’t call me Christmas Tree John.

"but **** one lousy sheep................"

I believe this sums up the situation quite well and apologies if I have gone too far

Need help with wanted level / reputation

Just a quickie - how do I wipe my wanted level? According to the police I have no criminal record, I have no fines to pay. Yet they always fire at me, telling me I'm wanted in the sector.
My reputation with Federation is "hostile" and with the Empire it's "unfriendly". How do I rectify this?
Thanks in advance.

Doing missions for the sub-factions is a good way to turn your reputation around. It may take a while before they fully trust you again but you'll eventually get there.

Now you might be asking 'how can I do that when everyone is attacking me?' Simple answer? Avoid the large space stations and concentrate your mission hunting on the outposts. Again, this may take a while but eventually you'll be back and unfriendly, then neutral, friendly and hopefully allied. Just takes a bit of time.

Alternatively, a save wipe is the easiest and quickest way.

It doesn't sound like you're wanted. Being hostile means they'll shoot you on sight. The only way you can really rectify this is to build up the reputation that you lost to get to 'hostile' and 'unfriendly' with the respective factions. TBH, that will take a LONG time to do. I think trading might be the fastest way as it gives you reputation based off of how much (value) you trade with the stations owned by whichever factions reputation you're trying to get. You could also trade in bounty vouchers or exploration data to the factions you need to boost rep with. Missions are also an option but if you're 'hostile' they may not offer you any.

The other two options are more extreme.
Wipe your save as a VERY last resort or move to Indy/alliance space where your reputation should still be neutral.

I'm curious, how have you been playing to get such bad reputation? Do you get scanned with illegal/stolen cargo a lot?

I thought this might be the case. I've been doing lots of missions since my misdemeanor, but it hasn't changed my reputation. I think my misdemeanor was blowing up a security ship after it started firing at me for killing a wanted ship (which I think was 2 weeks or so ago and I play everyday). I thought killing a wanted ship would have put me in good light, is that not the case?
I've also killed many wanted ships since this too. I always pay my fines as well (which are mainly for carrying illegal goods).

For some reason being fined for having illegal cargo gives you a huge hit to reputation. Best to avoid being caught anymore while you're trying to fix your rep. My guess is that's the main reason you're marked as hostile. I've killed a tonne of federal security ships and I'm still 'neutral' with the Feds. I do believe they've fixed the whole 'getting shot for killing a wanted target' thing so that should be a thing of the past now. Killing wanted ships does boost your reputation with whichever minor faction you trade them in to, which in turn gives you a small amount of rep with the major faction (I think it's based on value of the bounty, not quantity)

OK thanks for the info. I've got a type 6 transporter now, so I won't be doing any firing at ships or doing missions for illegal goods anymore. Until I get a decent combat ship anyway heh heh. So just trading for now, hopefully my rep will get better.

Yeah. I used the same joke/example to sum u reputation on page 1. Either no one got it, or it was TL;DR.. or humor is just different in other parts of the world.

But that joke DOES sum up reputation, human nature, and game mechanics all in one punchline quite beautifully.

It's easy to lose rep in real life too. "What do you mean I can't be trusted, I only murdered your family."

does reputation influences the chance to get scanned?

I am hostile to federation and I'm getting scanned multiple times at station?

Please fix!

In stations no, in space yes if youre allied with a faction youre chance of being scanned by feds seems less - interdiction. Though they seem to do it in USS sites.

silent running ala stealth mode helps, black markets in stations are bad news, u can get in lucky sometimes.

OUtposts on the other hand go right ahead into and dock.
