Oh well looks like I'm not buying any of the new skins then....

You forgot about it because they were around throwing out patches every day for a week after release, before they went on holiday over Christmas.

Well personally I didn't experience too many problems, so that's fair to say. Probably why I forgot other people did have issues.

I wonder (not I don't, it's a joke) if Frontier have pushed out an A/B test of the game - some people seem to be having zero problems, not even any bugs. Some are having major issues. If so, a cruel social experiment :D

I didn't have any problems with 1.0 right up to the point the servers all keeled over just after New Year, and the database got corrupted, then absolutely everyone had problems and nobody seemed to be around to fix them. I assume in reality the on-call server folks were but it didn't feel like it because of the lack of comms.

Would be great if I was wrong. As stated in the OP, I'm going with the PP Manual, which very clearly states that Merit decays at the 50% weekly rate, without any mention of factors which might prevent or slow the decay. Not my fault if the official manual is incorrect or incomplete.

Hm... just checked said Handbook. Might have changed it. Maybe thats the deal for not having competition. 50% cut each weak but fixed Merrit values instead of 10%, but competition within your very own faction which would lead most probably towards needed merits shifting higher and higher after time. If thats true, i have to disagree with you, kind of. The other system would be way more punishing to casuals. Keeping rank 3 and especially 2 is way easier that way. Again, taking into consideration my info is correct.

Yup, OP is spot on, it's all getting to the point of being laughable now. I spent roughly 2 hours on the PP beta when it first came out and towards the end, and both versions still had a ton of the same bugs. It wasn't like I was hunting for bugs either.

FD is just making a ton of poor decisions, and their getting hard to look past anymore. It's causing the game to be less and less appealing to me... When I make a hyperspace jump and the whole game lags and jerks and stutters as the FPS goes bananas on my $700 dollar graphics card, it just makes me mad.

I loved ED back in the original beta, but these continued mistakes and oversight and weird design choices are just going to make "other" space games shine that much brighter when they release.

It seriously feels like amateur hour around here, but what I really think, is that their pushing these updates out quick, regardless if their production servers or not, because we're just beta testing for the Xbox version. Microsoft isn't going to just bend over and take it like we do, they'll do their own in house testing, and FD has to have it ready for that. It's sad really, there was so many great ideas for this game during beta... what a waste.

Yea... I dont want to commit full time to doing Power Missions just to "stay in the game" (given my time allocation I might be at rank 2 for a week or so, and then back to square one). Personally I would like Rank progression to look similar to Naval one with permanent ranks, unless we screw something up (eg fail a progress mission) and get demoted.

Not really sure about the point of this thread. FD's reputation hasn't declined too much with me, even whilst I've been offline :)

Game's played fine for me since 1.3 (although I am playing away from PP controlled systems and haven't pledged to a power) - Navy ranking bug and server trouble last night aside.
Can't see all the fuss about which day they release updates on either. And the black skin on the Clipper is v. good ;) You should buy it.

I don't like the idea of decay at all. I know that there are those that find appeal in it though. What if we had two ranking systems for Powers? One is the current merit system, with bonuses that decay over time, and the other is a more permanent ranking system? Both can co-exist (and stack - I'd actually prefer that a Power has the same bonuses for both ranking systems, but it could vary, I don't know) and it'll have an appeal to open and solo, to casual and hardcore.

I personally hate chores - RIFT had a system that forced you into large-scale PvP whether you wanted to or not, in the form of strong buffs that carried over to PvE based on your ranking, and it decayed over time if you did not play it every day or something dumb. Frankly, I don't find it appealing if I'm going to be forced into maintaining it.

I don't mind the decay rate since, if you're only playing sporadically you're likely looking more of an offline type experience. If the rating is to pick a leader or leaders, then it makes sense. You can't have an AFK leader who crunched for a while and became leader, then left for a month.

As much as I love your videos man, I ve learned to take with a large pinch of salt your criticisms. You tend to gratuitously read too much into things. The above is just one example more and it doesn't help your own rep to avoid decay either I reckon ;)

I've not had a single problem - if you exclude getting disconnected all Saturday night.
Played for hours in the afternoon just fine, without any problem at all.

Luck of the Irish ;)

The first observation would be that FD consistently misnames what it's doing:

Beta really = Alpha
Release = Beta
Patches, when finally done before the next upgrade cycle = Gamma -> Release

Hard to argue that this isn't the case.

The second observation:

FD's success does NOT depend on any of us to CONTINUE to play the game. In fact, because of the costs associated with hosting the game, heavy users are a COST of doing business and contribute NOTHING to the bottom line of the company. Yes, maybe we buy a 5 pound paint job or something, but the reality is that the lion's share of revenue doesn't come from the user base continuing to play, but from the stream of new users purchasing the game. As soon as a user purchases the game they immediately become a liability to FD that reduces their profit.

The name of the game for FD is NOT client retention, it's getting new users into the game.

Knowing that this is the case, don't drive yourself crazy.

Only play betas if you have access for your own reasons, not FD's. They can give you some insight for how to position yourself for the next release and have a bit of a leg up on the crowd.

When the release drops, assuming you have already strategically placed all your assets ahead of time, Take a break from the game and do something else for the week after the initial drop and enjoy a good laugh on the forums as all the whining and arguing take place. Let the dust settle and plan your re-entry point as the fixes unfold and other "beta" testers give you enough clues on the forums to refine your re-entry plans.

Don't get so immersed in the game that you don't learn the meta game.

This debacle finally motivated me to go work on my Exploration ranking. As I saw what was coming in the beta, I moved all my assets to FW and sold off all the modules on the heavy iron as there was no way to predict the outcome of the 10% debate. Kitted up my Asp and I'm out of the fray for an as yet undetermined time period while the base and FD figures out where they are going with 1.3

It's starting to look like I'll remain in this approach until we get close to 1.4 Alpha - ooops, I mean Beta, or maybe i was right the first time... getting hard to keep it all straight at my age.

Decay is necessary. If it wasn't there, someone could amass the 10k merit threshold & quite happily rake in 50m CR each week by doing nothing at all. Not to mention nothing would get done (preparing, expanding, fortifying) because once everyone got to the magic 10k limit there would be no incentive to do so. As for the rate of decay, lets see what percentage it actually is before making judgements.

It was a joke.... prefaced by the (not I don't, it's a joke).

Beyond that, you are more than welcome to disagree with me. Don't take my videos in to account, they are just a creative outlet. If you know of me on these forums then you'll know my only major criticism of FD and ED has been how they handle communications, and how they handle deployment of patches - going all the way back to PB2.

Don't worry - I have the honour of still being blocked by Fireytoad on Twitter - that'll be awkward at LaveCon :D

And I will continue until I see a marked improvement. I'm not giving up on this game just yet.

Would be nice if the decay ramped up, starting at 15% or something and then got progressively higher, just to give a bit more leeway
