The Exploration Discussion Thread!

Good news everybody! My Sagittarius A* ETA is the 14th/15 November (barring death in real life). This is more than a week ahead of schedule.
I should be home before Christmas! :D

We'll have to throw you and the ExplOrca a 'Well done and welcome home' party! :D

I'll get the Leesti Evil Juice in then...

I'm now around 4000ly in, but I have no idea when I'll get to Sag A* as I now have WWE 2K16 occupying a decent amount of my gaming time and Fallout 4 happening very shortly. I'm having an Elite session right now and it's kinda relaxing.

Me and a buddy are saving up for Asps, and we're gonna fly in tandem to the core and back. Who says exploration has to be a solitary pursuit? Should be a (lucrative) giggle, we'll be cherry-picking systems and scanning en route. :D

Use Haulers

Haulers are ok. They tend to overheat when fuel scooping. I suggest either DBXs or T6s for a cheap, good exploration ship.

13KLY later, I have to say that the biggest downside to the hauler is the view. It's a fun little ship, but you don't get the sense of enormity that you would otherwise get in a 6 or ASP.

An Adder would work well too. Granted it has 1 Ly less jump range, but it has twice the fuel and an extra size 2 slot. (for more fuel or a shield gen)

Nah, we're gonna go in style. I've already got a kitted out DBX but I'd really like an Asp...

If its style and luxury whilst exploring your after then its got to be either a Orca or a Clipper :D

Or a Courier?...mmm...I can't believe I hadn't thought of this... :D

Oh god. Remember my 10,000LY round trip in the Adder? It almost drove me mental

Yeah, good little ships but its kind of like flying a ship whilst looking through a letter box :D Visibility is not its strong point! :D

Those are, ah, a little out of reach for now. My Vulture has been raking in credits for me in a CNB, but my buddy only has a Viper, so his progress is a touch slower.

However, an Orca to the Core? I like your thinking sir!! :D

Yup. And have just seen the note in the Dev Update about possible client release this week, so hoping there might be something around that sort of time.

Am out exploring again, but heading away from the core - sounds like it's too busy there :>

Loving the DBX and the way it sucks up fuel when scooping (was in a Cobra for my first trip out to the black, and it was more a sipper than a glugger!). Still not found me an ELW, so looking fwd to that happening. Did find my first ringed brown dwarf, but I suspect they're pretty common as things go...

This trip out, my first with a shiny new DBX, did begin quite badly mind. I started from the edge of the bubble, and made a few quick jumps in a row to get to less explored space. Noticing I was down to about 1/3rd fuel I decided to stop off to scoop and fill up the tank. Approached the star - no scooping message. Got a bit closer, no scooping message. Checked it wasn't a T-Tauri, no it was an M. Thought I must have had my fuel scoop powered off for some reason, so went to turn it on in the modules list. Ahh - no fuel scoop listed. Ooops! I had had a scoop selected in outfitting when I bought the ship, but must have got distracted at the critical moment and not fitted it.

Managed to limp back to a station, and then headed off to find the A-est rated scoop I could fit!

I heard "Main fuel tank drained" eight times in that one field. Now that's exploring

You had nothing to fear. I was close by with 8t of fuel limpets on board.

I can't take the credit for the Orca idea, BongoBaggins (he's on this thread) is the guy to speak to about that one, he's currently on his way to the core in one! :D

I recently got back from the core in my Clipper though, great ship for the job and I loved every minute of it! :D

My buddy gave up and let me go ahead. Had an amazing stint in a CNB, made 2.1 million in about 30 minutes. And thats after sharing the spoils with my wing-mate... Anyway, that pushed me up to Asp money, so I have one and I am cherry-picking good systems on my way towards the core. :D

Best of luck with your Sag A trip Cmdr :D

If you need any help there's loads of seasoned explorers and Sag A veterans on this thread so just shout up and someone will be able to point you in the right direction :D

Guys since everyone seems to be heading in the same direction (sag a) any other cool locations to visit that haven't really been hit hard by the exploration savvy members of elite?
