The Exploration Discussion Thread!

I don't get anywhere close to the distances you folk are getting, but you may be able to help me. Do you track they systems/ planets you have been to and if so, how do you track where you have been?

I buy a small ship in any ports I happen to come across, but that doesn't help with the unpopulated domain of space. Is there an app or some add on software - or is there a feature in the game itself that i have completely missed?

Its' the old fashioned pen & paper for me. I bought a note book for ED put anything of intrest into it. eg. mining spots, trade runs, first discovery's etc. It's becoming my bible.

Lots of apps out there for trade runs etc. Nothing in game for tracking. I cant work out how to put links into forum on XB. (my Gt speaks volumes) lol
Maybe some other Cmdrs can link some helpful Apps/tools.

Nope, it's pen & paper or nothing. According to David Braben's latest Reddit Q&A, bookmarking/exploration logging is planned for 2.2

I currently use a document in Google Docs. But to be honest, that's just kinda fallen by the wayside as I've started just rushing to get back. I like using Google Docs as it autosaves whenever it's updated.

So... Has anyone else seen a planet encroach into the ring of a gas giant? Or am I alone in having seen this? o_O

Yeah, I've come across this but only once, I'm sure I've got the system name written down too. I'll have a look when I get home and post it up if anyone is interested :)

I'd definitely be interested in seeing this if you have the name of the system. Cheers!

No problem, Hodriss. I'll look it up when I get home tonight :)

Was it in Empire space by any chance?

I honestly can't remember, it was a fair while back but I'm sure I jotted it down because it was so unusual. I remember dropping into normal space just above the rings and watching the moon (it was about half in and half out of thr ring) slowly move away within the ring itself :D Awesome to watch :D

Sorry Cmdr's, I can't seem to find the system name in my notebook :( I'm sure I wrote it down somewhere. It stands a chance it was back in my post-it note days before I went and bought a ED specific pad :D

Well, FWIW the rogue planet/moon in question had a station orbiting it, somewhere in Imperial Space.

After nearly 700 hours in the bubble I have just set off on my first voyage into the black in the good ship Clipperous....heading to Chameleon first then who knows, maybe straight back or never to be seen again.

That's right! A Coriolis if memory serves :D

Yup, I approached it from the wrong side of the ring, realised my mistake just in time to slow down enough that the emergency drop caused no damage. Thats when I noticed the planets odd behaviour.

I'll keep my eye out, its not too far from Kamocan, Im based thereabouts atm, grinding Imperial rank and whatnot. Im sure I'll see it again at some point!

Well this thread seemed to have died a bit ago, but I finally made it back from my Sag A* run. I think all said and done I was out a little over six months. Visited a little over 2000 systems, and stopped turning in data after 20 mil (I was getting very sleepy from turning in one page at a time, so I stopped for the night. Will continue turning in data tonight).
Most interesting thing on my trip was a system with 4 earth likes (which I believe ties the record for most earth likes in a single system) except mine has a ringed earth like in it!
I'll find the system name when I get home (took a screenshot on my xbox in front of the ringed earth like so I have the system name).
The last 1,000 light years were nerve-racking, as I have been gone so long I forgot how to deal with interdictions and was sure I was going to get pulled out by an NPC. Luckily, I made it to the station I planned on without a single interdiction. I remembered how to dock with no issue, as I had been doing the docking training tutorial mission every other week to at least keep that skill sharp.
The last few jumps before my inhabited system were all brown dwarfs, and that got a bit scary, too!
Anyway, Old Yeller, my trusty DBX is home safe and sound, with 81% hull remaining. I think that is pretty good all things considered.
I do have a question, though. I am selling my exploration data to a federation aligned station. Will this improve my standing with the Feds? I'd like to visit Sol at some point, and don't really know what I need to do to get the Sol system permit. Should I be selling all this data somewhere else?

Congrats on making it back, 4 ELWs in one system, a great find!

As for the Sol permit, I believe you get it when you reach "Petty Officer" in the Fed Navy, gained by doing BB missions.

I am preparing to set out on a longer expedition, but as of yet I have not collected enough to get the ASP, still in a CobraM3. What I am really looking to accomplish is to go far enough to get my tag on one of the 400 billions stars in the game (they can't all be discovered yet, right?). Should I wait, will I find myself at an insurmountable gap, or is it possible to get decently far in the ship I have? Anybody have a suggested direction to find as of yet undiscovered systems? What must one do to get credited with the find, scan and then detailed scan every body in the system, or is the star alone enough?

Thanks in advance for the seasoned A's to my noob Q's.

You can get anywhere in a Cobra except for the extreme outer fringes. The 65,000LY Club (distance from Sol) has Cobra pilots in it.
As for the direction: any. Just pick a point and go. You'll need to go 1,000-1,500 LY out before you find an undiscovered system, unless you're very lucky
