The Exploration Discussion Thread!

Im currently wandering around the galaxy, visited a line of b type stars that stand out for lightyears around and despite it all being discovered the blackholes there including 3 in one system should boost my profits. Now im taking the slow route to a neutron field checking out all gas giants and metalic planets on my way. Very slow going though. Maybe 2 hours just to do 15-20 systems when there is a lot to scan.

Yes, you make a small amount of money. If you do Sagittarius A trip just honking you can get over 10m depending on how many systems you honk. Not sure if it includes trip home but I think it does. I have never tried this myself though so that's a very rough estimate based on things I've read.

It's not the best way to make money, but If you are just trying to get somewhere quickly it's worth honking along the trip as you do get a small bit of money.

I'll let ya'll know what it pays outsince thats what I'm doing. Ive scanned some stars and planets thought, but it's mostly just honking.

Also my star and planet scans aren't detailed. Didn't have the space to fit a DS in my DBS. I wish now I didn't have shields. Oh well lessons learned. Next trip out will be in a bigger ship with more space.

Thanks chaps! I am being quite thorough with my scanning, however I am dropping the odd system or two where it appears to be metallics about 200,000 + LYs away.

Obviously the cash isn't the be all or end all of the trip but a lump sum at the end of it is certainly welcome. Knowing that each system has contributed in at least a small way is welcome news. That Python may well become a reality!

What is the average amount of systems scanned on a Sag A* trip? On a there and back basis assuming you are not unlucky enough to venture back into a system you had already explored / visited?

By by the way +1 rep to both you CMDR Murf and jpinkston 70 ... However it appears that I've repped CMDR Murf too many times ... Could a kind soul rep him for me?

My Orca got there in just over 1,500 jumps. That many jumps will get an Asp there and back

I didn't think I was going to have anything to report from my short game time yesterday. Basically I made bunch of jumps and a bunch of scans and didn't travel very far. Near the very end of my session I found these though, so that was nice.

Undiscovered ELWs 2 and 3

If only we could land here.

High above the eye of the storm, I'm glad can't land there.

Very Niiiiiicccee

This system supposedly had 70 objects but i can only count 55. Anyone see more than this in a system?

I have located quite a cluster of White Dwarf systems.

Are they worth a look?
they got any real worth behind them? How do they compare to Black Holes / Neutron Stars / ELWs / WWs?
Possibly most important - how dangerous are they? Considering I'll be jumping into a White Dwarf primarily?

I plan on using my account on the Xbox to explore, probably short trips in a barely useful ship. I don't have much money to buy anything. I was think of an Adder outfitted for basic exploring. Once Horizon shows up I'd like to explore planets as well.

I also have an account on a PC, Bootcamp Mac actually and it's far below minimum specs for Horizon but it works okay in solo. Next big thing will be a dedicated gaming PC for Horizons.

This has been posted before. It will give you an idea of the worth credit-wise. However it is more difficult to evaluate what you consider your time worth and/or how much value you put on exploration and discovery. Those things you have to calculate yourself. Hope this helps though.

Thanks Stasis! Would +1 rep for the chart but seems like I've tried to give you a bit too much Lovin'...

I am am currently in the middle of a Blackhole / Neutron Star field and was monitoring where it led - and potentially quite happily into a white dwarf cluster of systems.

Do you happen to know how dangerous White Dwarfs are? I've been told by 2 CMDRs that they are similar to Neutron stars. I am really looking to confirm that if I jump in to the system, I won't be immediately sizzled. My hull is approx half so I would rather head on home and share the cluster location for others if I feel it's too dangerous to risk in my ships current state

Not much progress to report today. I didn't play much. I was feeling indifferent and not scanning things. Took it as a sign I need to take a little break. I did notice one thing though. I past 15,000 jumps today. Going to have a whole lot more before I get back.

15k jumps ? Wow! That's a huge amount. I am up to around 330 and thought that was quite a few. If 15k is considered "normal", then I will need to start splitting up my spread sheet LOL.

How long have you been out now ?

If you throttle right back while in the jump phase. it gives you plenty of time to turn your boat around and away from the star. This is what I always do, and it works well regardless of what you come across.

Wish I could join up in CQC. I love pwning explorers. :p

The 15K jumps is total since I started playing the game way back in GPP. I started this trip 5 days ago and I probably have over 200 jumps on it. I'm heading to Sag A and I'm taking my time.... well at least until "space madness/boredom starts to set in.

Ahhhh... ok, all understood now. I am still quite new to ED and my status says 1615 total jumps. Interestingly my Lvl 3 scans is 19,844, so I have started exploring kinda early in the game I guess. I think the thing that stops me from going "mushy" with exploration, is the fact that I have the TV on and also keep track of my findings with a spread sheet, and finding interesting planets and stuff for my blog.

My first encounter with a small white dwarf was at GD 215. I lost my sidewinder trying to scoop from it - oops. and it was then that I learnt about small dwarfs and scoopable suns. I had to learn the hard way of course

Today's update: I managed to get a few hundred LYs in. I'm still over 20K LY away from Sag A though. I dropped in on 5 different Neutron systems, all of them already scanned. It's a bit frustrating considering that I'll go through system after system without seeing a commanders name. Its OK though, I'll take the first discovery bonus on all the stuff in between. [money]

I did find one interesting bit. I scanned my first Water moon and it was orbiting a Water world.

One other thing. I'm I boring everybody with this stuff or is there just not that many explorers around now?

You're doing fine. I'm out there too but heading back from my trip to Sag A.

Not boring me at all! Think I mentioned in chat that I enjoy seeing the pictures :) so keep them coming

I found my first Water moon the other day, it too was orbiting a Water World. It was also terraformable. So I understand the excitement and desire to share this stuff.

Mine was further from its planet though, you can barely see the planet in the background.

Keep posting! :D

I'll be putting some more stuff up aswell as soon as I get chance to get back in the cockpit :D

So what's going on here? Look at the variation in star brightness, perpendicular to the galactic plane. Some stars are plotted in front of the rings, ruining the shot. It makes no sense but I have been seeing it for weeks.
