The Exploration Discussion Thread!

After Months of cruising around the galaxy I have finally got access to the Founders World and the Elite Exploration rank.

I shall now be hanging up my DS and looking for a different career whilst waiting patiently for the arrival of Horizons, when I shall be returning to exploration.

Don't know what I'll do in the meantime, I suck at everything else:D

All of the reps, CMDR o7

Exploration Elite is probably the hardest to get. You have to be cool-headed, calm under unexpected pressure, astonishingly determined and a little bit mental

Nice work, Cmdr! :D

Hope to hit Elite in Exploration when I get back from this trip aswell :D

Have rep, Sir!

That's me - a bit mental.
After various forays in trading and combat I'm off back into the black....
My trusty Exploration Asp and I aren't coming back until we've found enough stuff to get to Elite!
(Currently Pioneer 42%)
Not quite sure where we're heading but it's "out there".......

Hey congrats!

Why hit not have a dabble in PP - see if you can change the fate of a system, stand for election and become a major PP contender? I suspect you will have time :)

Well, this is my first post ever. So I might as well check in.

I'm Cmdr R1ZENTyDE (pronounced Risen Tide) and I'm currently scanning all of the systems with the Lagoon Sector (Lagoon Nebula). I still have hundreds, if not thousands of systems to go, but in order that I don't miss one, I've resorted to recording which ones I've scanned on paper (Microsoft Word). I'm planning to go nebula hopping as well as taking pictures along the way. As a matter of fact, I came across a Trinary Star system with two twin planets that are within 2-5ls from each other.

It's just something for me to do until Frontier gives us Horizons on Xbox One.

Welcome to the Forum, Cmdr :D

Scanning all of the systems within the Lagoon Sector is one heck a challenge! Hat's off to you, Sir! :D

Have some rep too :D

You might go space nuts before you finish that task.

Right on commander o7. That's quite a notch in your belt.

Thanks for your support guys, now to get on with the rest of the game. Fly safe

Welcome Commander, good luck with this massive task!

Hi all! I've recently decided to give exploration a go, with one main goal in mind - get my name as a first discoverer of something! I'm not wanting to necessarily find a fancy nebula or somewhere with high traffic - even a random hunk of rock somewhere in the deep blackness of space will do (at least I'll know it's there!).

I've recently acquired a good 16million credits from bounty hunting and community events, so I feel like I'm ready to fit out an ASP Explorer for the job. The build I think I'll go with (after watching/reading some build guides) is as follows: http://www.edshipyard.com/#/L=70g,,2-3I6u7_6u5K8S8I,52MmpT7Q4mpU2UI2jw

I do have a few questions though:

1. How should I go about actually finding an undiscovered planet or system? Pick a direction random and start scanning any systems I come across? It may be obvious that I'm fairly new to ED and definitely to exploring, so if I'm way off the mark here, some advice would be nice.

2. How do I know that a planet in the system is undiscovered? Do you get a specific message on the HUD telling you so once you scan it, or do you need to check the system map for each new system you arrive in? Do I need to do a detailed surface scan to ensure I get the planet once I sell my data?

3. I've heard heat damage can be risky in binary or trinary star systems. If I happen to arrive in one, what's the best way to minimise heat damage?

Thanks!

If you check my signature, there is a link to my blog. The introduction will give some clues as to how I have gone about things. There is also a page, showing a route that I took when I first went out before I almost lost my ship on a bad landing. Don't take my route, but you may discover that if you go alongside it, you can find some planets close to the bubble where you can add your name. Disregard the parts about Plutonium and other planetary stuff, as sadly, you guys don't have it yet.

Heatsinks are not required, when you jump, shut your throttle right down, and this will give you plenty of time to align for scooping. My heat never gets above 64% and I scoop at a leisurely pace of 8 - 10 Mm/s and hardly ever have to alter my course.

save money and get a explorauler, a hauler fitted for the black. That's what I used for my first jaunt out, it cost just over 2 mil all in all. Some people take a heat sink but I never bothered. Trick is to throttle back before you jump into a new system and look on the galactic map to see what type of star your heading to. I have a shield on The hauler which is just for when I'm in the bubble, turn it off when your out in the black saves a lot of heating issues. If you get into a system honk the disco scanner and if there is no CMDR name attached to it in the system map it's all yours if you can get back and hand in the info before another commander can. Look if your not fussy you can get a few credits in systems where commanders left icy or Rocky planets in scanned as they don't think it's worth the effort. I only plan one jump at a time and if I found the route heavily used before I got there I went up/down/left/right off the route I was heading and found unclaimed systems missed in heavily explored tracts of space

Thanks for the advice so far, I'll definitely read over it before I make any purchasing decisions!

I actually do have another question while I'm here - is every single system going to have a 'first discovered by' tag on the stars and planets in the system map? For instance, I can't see any on LHS 3447, the starting system, and I find it hard to believe that nobody has scanned them yet! The only difference I can see is that some of the systems that don't have the 'discovered by' tags on them do seem to have stations or outposts in them - is that why?

Thanks again! :)

Anyone know how to keep the game from crashing when turning in exploration data? I just got back from sag a and have data from 1200 systems to turn in but I can only do maybe 2 or 3 before the game crashes.

I don't think the starter systems will have the "first discovered" and neither will the stations. I think you will need to go out around 500 Ly, if not more from the bubble to find any true undiscovered systems. A lot of explorers will just survey the major star when travelling and will only do the whole system if they feel it is worth it cash wise. So you may find a lot of icy or rocky bodies that have not been claimed as they don't pay much.

Systems that you find that are un-explored, means that that they are un-explored to you, regardless of whether they have been explored by anyone else.

The wiki: http://elite-dangerous.wikia.com/wiki/Explorer is a good source of information with regards to payouts, and other exploration stuff too.
