The FFED3D Thread

Hello, so advisers are gone?
What?

how can I see myself in the orbital map?
This feature is broken in FFE (worked in FE2).
Once I saw something red and it was 130AU far! I clicked on it but there is no way to see what it is besides flying to it right? Selected object shows on map?
Turning the labels on usually suffices.

I am not sure now because I was under constant attack by someone :-\
Rest assured that whatever attacked you wasn't 130AU away.

ups it seems I missed your answers because they were on the next page! LOL Thanks. The newspaper thing is really a little confusing. So the "issues remaining" mean how many of them I will be able to read when they are published - if I understand it right?
About the map again: there is written in the manual that I can see other ships in the orbital map. I guess this feature is broken the same way as my view of the ship. About the missions: if I missed the wiccan race it won't ever be available again right? The same thing with the sohalian plague :)

And finally I am begining to think that this game is not for me :-] It is so hard to make some money when you start on Gateway! I meet abut 5 groups of pirates during one try to sell stupid 4 tonnes of animal meat or whatever :-\ Profit-repair cost keep me just above 0$ :-( I tried about 20 systems and there were still those stupid pirates everywhere. I think it is qute unrealistic they can intercept me in my 1000km/s anyway... Then I found somehow peacefull system finally - eta cassiopeia and I transported some goods to the system under it and back, but having any other idea like transporting a parcel elsewhere was a terrible mistake! I think that difficulty is quite unbalanced if I meet 20 much better enemy ships which kill me almost on sight (especially when they are 3 agains me) on my one desperate flight somewhere to make little money :-\ Maybe I am just noob, do you have any tips?

also it seems I have a problem with targetting tunnels - show targettting tunnels option does not do anything even if I have target selected and I don't know what "allow targetting tunnels for ships" mean - should it show tunnels when I want to intercept a ship?

much happier now :)

So it seems I have a new hope not being a loser :) I made some delivery missions for the military and have now military drive and finally a 1MW beam laser which makes life so much easier. The only problem is the fuel, I am afraid I will have to take a lot of it with me because it is not sold everywhere. That means less space for goods :-\

Yes. You have subscription for one year at the beginning of the game, of course, you can extend it - seek ads on BBS.

Yes, it's broken in FFE. Works just fine in FE2 and it's very useful.

Yes. All the 'plot' missions are unique, and if you miss them, you lose the opportunity.

I recommend finding yourself a so-called milkrun route (high profit, no risk), you can stick to when not doing missions. Sol-Barnard's Star is probably the most common one, ferrying Robots from Barnard's to our solar system and Luxuries on your way back built many a spacer fortune.

Smuggling Luxuries into Van Maanen's (a rigid religious dictatorship) is even more profitable, especially given that I have yet to be searched by customs there, but you'll have to make some contacts there and remember them - police often imitates black-market ads. The only drawback is that Van Maanen's doesn't export anything worthwhile, but you can still profit by buying computers there and selling them in some fed civilization centre like Sol.

I think it is qute unrealistic they can intercept me in my 1000km/s
Not really, intercepts are perfectly doable, I've even done some myself. Even if the pirates are slower and start in the same place, they'll catch up with you when you decelerate.

anyway... Nah, it's just that in space no one will hear you scream. :p ;)

As for detours - choices and consequences, if you take parcel to some backwater system, especially one labelled as "Anarchy", where economy relies on "Survival of the best armed", then, you'd better have some aptitude at swatting undesirables and means to do so without getting killed yourself.

Maybe I am just noob, do you have any tips?
Just a noob, I think, which means, you'll probably get better.

Unfortunately, there isn't much advice I can offer you, apart from:
1. Buying a good ship (some larger fighter, like Cobra, Asp or even Viper should suffice, hell, I shot down my first Imperial Explorer with Adder).
2. Buying good equipment.
3. Reading this tutorial (scroll down).
4. Practising an awful lot.

also it seems I have a problem with targetting tunnels - show targettting tunnels option does not do anything even if I have target selected and I don't know what "allow targetting tunnels for ships" mean - should it show tunnels when I want to intercept a ship?
Yes, it should show targeting tunnels for ships as well.

AFAIK this option doesn't work in D3DFFE yet - it does in both FFE and FE2.

So it seems I have a new hope not being a loser :) I made some delivery missions for the military and have now military drive and finally a 1MW beam laser which makes life so much easier. You should mostly be wary of the systems having military fuel as major import (unfortunately, Eta Casiopea is one of them, forcing you to take spare fuel there). Another problem is that radioactives are illegal in some systems, which forces you to either, risk capture by customs and later by police and try to 'sell' (for doubled negative price) the hot (heh) wares on black market, or dump them into space immediately after entering the systems and hope, that police scanners don't detect this illegal act.

Hi all, finally installed patch 1.12 for this, and am liking the improved graphics. Scanner still not right, but better.

However, a couple of times lately I seem to die for no apparent reason while I'm hovering several hundred metres above a port. I'm waiting for a hit, and one time I accidentally fired my laser. Two seconds later it was game over. Second time I got my hit, the Police issued a warning, and again, I'm dead. Nothing shooting at me, and even if they were, I've been in my indestructible Thargoid Vessel.

Is this something anyone else has noticed? I'll remove the patch if this is going to happen all the time.

Seems it wasn't patch 1.12 that caused this "blowing up for no reason" problem. Went back to my original version of FFED3D and that was the same. As soon as the Police were after me, no matter what ship I'm in, I suddenly start taking hits from something invisible and then Game Over!

Now uninstalled.

I'll be back when Elite 4 comes out.

Bye everyone.

Gateway is a great place to start, actually. There is a "gap in the market" locally that you can exploit for a great deal of money.

Unless you are a seasoned pilot, you are never going to last long in the small fighters. Avoid all but the easiest encounters until you have a nice ship with some shields.

Here is a guide to getting a kitted out asp within a few months, starting in Gateway:

You can do the medical supplies run and gain a bit of fast cash, or sell everything apart from your Navigation computer & Autopilot and fill up with fuel and scurry off to the Sol system with your tail between your legs :D (of cource I've never done this.....

I found this thread buried in the pages of threads.
I thought some of us might find it interesting.

Dear Mr. Braben (letter from Russia)
Dear Mr. Braben,

This letter is on behalf of the first-rate Russian-speaking community including space games fans from Eastern Europe. For a long time we’ve been enjoying playing the game with already magical name “Elite” – from the times of ZX Spectrum till now, in time of multi-core Athlons and Hyper-threading Pentiums. This game has become for us the best project
ever existed, the symbol of freedom and realization of our dreams on self-actualization in boundless depths of space. We would like to express our gratitude to you, Ian Bell and to all your team, infinite gratitude – like the universe you’ve created and freedom Elite has given us. We are grateful to you for giving us the possibility to find ourselves “there”.
There – where there are no limits, among the stars. And, of course, we would like to congratulate you with Elite’s twentieth anniversary.
Best regards to all who participated in the project.
Also we would like to ask you if there anything we can help with.
Perhaps with Elite 4? Our community is at your disposal. We could help with localization, beta-testing etc.
Our community includes programmers, designers, composers etc. and we are waiting impatiently for some information about E4 release.
Some time ago we asked you about the possibility of FE2
release or FFE as shareware or similar, or to release the sources. You replied in the
positive but said that you need to check the legality of the rights of lawsuit with Take Two that at that time was still going.
So if it’s already not we would be very grateful if you kindly send us the FFE sources or give us the link for download. Then we could make good Russian localization of this brilliant game.

Looking forward to receiving your reply. Any info will be appreciated.

Sincerely,

on behalf of Russian-speaking community
...

RE: Steve

I just hope they don't give up on the project because their work on it has been amazing so far. I get the feeling that they are working on the more complex aspects of the mod and they just don't have any info to share right now. It's either that or they are taking a break, one that is well earned. We may hear more later on in the year.

Certainly hope so. I recall that the lead programmer was working on some pretty good water effects. Maybe the next mod will be a big advance and not just bug squashing, as the previous ones were :)

That said, when the new models come out, they are nice :)

MY GOD!!!!

They look fantastic.

Hope theres a update soon, really impressed by them pics.

I made new sound effects for FFE...

...cause some of the olf ones sounded quite dated in my opinion, while some of the others were quite annoying (I hated the old Beam-Laser-FX ;) )

So, if you like, download: http://innociv.redio.de/FX.ZIP and put them into the FX-directory of FFE.

Have fun with it :)

I really should download this update, part of me is thinking of waiting until it's finished though. I must admit I don't really like that new station graphics, the textures look a bit messy. It might look better moving I suppose.

Yeah, you should. Who knows when/if it'll be truly finished!

I guess it depends what you're used to. I don't play any space games other than Elite and Frontier, so these are the best graphics as far as these games are concerned. But compared to more recent games they might not be up to scratch.

They do look good moving though :)
