The FFED3D Thread

I've set StarDustSize to 10 but nothing's appearing. Is there a particular model or texture that needs to be present?

It could be a using a draw command or value that's unknown. The dust that's seen is using the 'ball array' draw command and is actually a 3d 'model' of points. (see "The Frontier Universe-Frontier Objects" at Jongware's website)
I'll stick a break point in there when next at my PC & see if it's being used or not.

(Laptop gpu frazzled itself other night so can't Remote Desktop to pc from the front room now, boo!)

I haven't gotten around to getting the new patch version yet, but i have a thought and question here, mostly in relation to how i've done modding/playtesting before:

Should we have a separate thread for AndyJ's mod? Looking at my first entry in this thread, it might be less unwieldy if all that type of indepth discussion had it's own place?

It would depend on how 'into' it folks want to get, but i reckon we could get a good indepth discussion going while trying to fix-up Andy's version as best we can?

If folk think this would be a goer, then i'm very happy to prepare a starting thread (it may take me a couple of days to compile all the info i would like to see in it, links, step-by-step guides etc). So what do we think?

Well spotted, that does happen but when just travelling through the system after hyperspacing in - nothing. Could this be a bug?? ;)

Nope :) They are there (all the time, not just near space stations). Once you jump into a system (or anytime flying in space), just turn your speed off (until you hit zero!), then slowly increase it, and you will see them. Once you hit around +1500 km/h they start to get more difficult to notice, and at normal speeds for flying around a system they simply get lost in the speed!

Slightly larger representations would make them easier to spot, but it would be trial and error to work out what size works best at all speeds, you wouldn't want football sized chunks when coming into dock at 100 km/h!!!

===================

Ok some other stuff to throw in here before we might have a separate thread:

I've updated my small mini mod to include the names of Steve Tyler and VampireDuCosmos in the credits of the readme, as i didn't know the exact names at the time i threw it together. I've also updated the mars texture, as i had made it too 'red' in relation to the planets in game view from space, so it is more blue now to better fit that.

The link should be the same, but i'll put it here now and maybe later as it expands look to add it to the file repository on spacesimcentral:

In relation to something i mentioned in that large post i did, you do exit from Hyperspace facing 'backwards', so facing your entry cloud. Is this a deliberate change maybe? (a precaution to protect against bounty hunters?) or just a mistake? I'm not bothered by it, just curious and it was confusing the first couple of times!

Here is a screenshot of it, a few seconds after arrival in a system. Look! it's in front of me! My laser target is facing it, but my direction of travel is behind me:

Should the surface of Mars look like this, i know it has been terraformed, but dayglo green seems....very alien? The same for everyone, or am i missing a texture perhaps? Merlin, for example is fine, looks 'normal', but this is Mars for me:

And what textures deal with distant Suns and Planets when flying in a system?

When they are far away (say the Sun (Sol) from near mars space), they seem very 'dull', as in not very bright in the sky. What files deal with these representations, i don't think i've come across them in the texture or models folders? I could add some brightness to them if someone knew where they were in the game files?

Also i've seen people talk about performance issues in this thread (a number of years back it seems!), and i had noticed a sort of small lag around Mars, when in near space and maneuvering with Mars in view, some dark 'tears' in the blue surface etc. Not massive issues, just a little 'sticky'.

What textures are used here for planet views from space? maybe i could see about reducing their 'weight' to reduce the lag a bit? Or has this been tried quite a bit already?

And finally for this small post ;) Some shots that i feel just show what an awesome effort Andy has made to the game (or whomever was responsible for the water and atmosphere effects on planet). Well done, it is a kind of beautiful

By all means. There aren't that many of us posting in this thread, but separating it out may generate some interest...

All true, I just remember it working more effectively in JJFFE. Will have to load that up and see :)

Hasn't happened to me AFAIK

Nah, same for me. I think someone got their colouring data wrong during terraforming.

Andy will know for sure, but I think this stems from the way the program renders stars when they're distant. They tend to pop into view quite suddenly as you get closer. I think improvements have been made over the original game though.

I'm not going to go through nearly 2000 posts when someone clever can oint me in the right direction...???

I have Windows 7 and never totally got the hang of how some old 32 bit or dos based games like FFE3d are supposed to work.
Can someone point me to or give me a nuggets guide (simple steps please) to downloading and getting FFE3d to work please?
Firstly I have downloaded FFED3D.7z from spacesimcental, but when I tried to upzip it I got the message
"The archive is either in unknown format or damaged"

I also tried to download the FFE3DAJ version and got the same message.

Now totally brassed off and in need of tea and sympathy!:(

First get the packaged dos box version of FFE.

Once you have that installed pull it out of dos box into its own folder.

You need 7 zip to unpack 7z files. es me off too. Why make everyone download another unpacker to save a couple of extra bytes?

Anyway, extract the files over the top and experiment.

Read through the first post in my AndyJ Bugfix/Testing thread (a few posts below somewhere). I also had corrupt downloads from SpaceSimCentral for the main game, so had to get it from the original russian site, which i link in that first post.

Good luck - it is an awesome improvement :)

No problem, Give the version on Eliteforever a try, see if you get sound with that version.

Great. It works with sound. Thank you... but (cos there had to be a "but")
the image on my screen is only about A5 size and I coudnt see how to get full screen. Ideas?
Adjusting (reducing) the screen resolution down just made it blurry and indistinct.
Cheers

Glad you've got sound. :D

If you click on the info tab in the encounters launcher it tells you how you can adjust your screen to go fullscreen,

Although it dosn't work for me it might for you.

I've copied and pasted the info for you below.

Information
-----------
This game has known bugs as follows

1. Icons on Dashboard sometimes not visable in window mode

Changing the fullscreen=0 to fullscreen=1 by editing
the ffewin.cfg in
notepad will launch the game in
fullscreen mode. This is located in the

CDROOT/AUTOPLAY/FFED3D Directory

Windows Vista and above
-----------------------
In full screen Mode you
sometimes have to click "Below " the icons
or selections to
enable/disable/buy/sell/launch etc.
The fix below should rectify this
problem.

**Fix for mouse bug in FFE D3D**

1. Right click on the FFE D3D exe file and select "Properties"
2.
Click the compatibility tag
3. Check the "Disable visual themes" tick
box
4. Click "Apply" then "OK"

Glad you've got sound. :D

Cheers, I will give it a go tonight.
If this comes off I will look you up in Elite Dangerous when its out and buy you a pint at a bar somewhere in the far flung regions of the Spiral Arm. :D
