The FFED3D Thread

I would be happy with the same setup as FE2, but with the added bonus of JJFFE controls too, then FFE3D would finally be the game I wish it would be. To this day I still think the FE2 ships just feel better to fly even if the flight models are very close its still noticeable at least to me at any rate.

****, yes!

Flight model is generally the same (if you patch it up to JJFFE, at least), but in combat FFE tries to be helpful which makes things worse.

It does. It's just that it's less crippling without ground out to kill you.
Actually we're both right & both wrong I've since realised.

If they trigger red alert but then shoot out of range (cos of your speed) it switches to manual mode not engines off mode.
But you are right when they stay in range, it switches to engines off mode.

@grasshopperfoto

i guess there will never be a mac release of FFED3D*,
it seems anyway the further development has canceled.
it's up to the community to keep the game in shape.
*thus mainly because it's a wrapper to JJFFE,
which i assume has been made with XNA, it seems also be reasonable because there exists no sourcecode (XNA uses a exchange system of projects between developers). also i checked once the shader specs and they are compliant exactly to XNA6.

actually i'm restricted to use a macbook, i will see if i get it working at all and a useful framerate when using wine (mycoolwrapper).

will report experiences and specs of my macbook soon.

oops, unfortunately it didn't runs under wineskin (not yet).
happens not often, but it's of course in range of possibilities.

but who knows what the future might bring...

perhaps it's possible to use a multiplatform development environment (i know already one) to recreate what dreamzz has done back then.

means to build a wrapper to JJFFE that runs on various platforms.
surely not the best choice, but who knows what we can get out of that.

---

let me think...
could be the nonstandart opengl32.dll, if wine uses his own opengl32.dll then i know the reason.

---

i would really like if we could get the above idea to something working.
i would do a lot of things different, mainly how the models are bind in FFED3D isn't very pleasing.
i mean, it simply overrides all what FFE offers, so the models aren't dynamic in FFED3D as the are in FFE.
but i strongly believe there must be a solution to that.

FFED3D Issues despite all attempts

Greetings Programs.....:)

I have been trying to get FFED3D working correctly for quite some time now.

I have tried everythng suggested in various forums and readme files but nothing can seem to get the icons to appear.

- Varying screen resolutions (sooooooooo many tried under the cfg file)
- Setting to the suggested resolution in the readme does not work
- Direct X updates etc
- Aspect ratio changes and different combination of windowed and full screen all do not seem to solve the problem.
- Tried patch 1.1 and 1.12b to no avail
- Tried many variants of running the file in "compatability mode" to see if that would fix the issue. No good.
- Tried all the different "settings" like 256 colours etc on that same "properties page"...all no good.
- Tried the version "FFE Complete" available on SpaceSimCentral and http://ffeartpage.com/ffed3d.htm#tag1 to no avail
- Tried the "FFE 4 part repacked" version available on SSC again to no avail
- FrontierAstro's point to SSC so same files.
- Tried the version from the Russian site to no avail
- Got the "CD" version from the Russian site tried that as well to no avail
- Tried the different cockpit file incase that was causing the issue but no....still no icons. :-(
- Installed a new OS (XP) under Virtual Box, still no icons appear.
- Tried installing XP dual boot, still no icons appear.

- UPDATE 8/12/2012. Tried the above with Synchromesh's version, (screen res, compat mode options etc etc) icons not functional.

- UPDATE 20/1/2013. Even tried plugging in an external monitor as someone suggested it. I knew it was a graphics card issue but it was worth a shot............no it did not do anything.

- UPDATE 9/2/2013 Synchromesh changed the contents of the Textures directory to remove the panel that does not display icons replacing it with panels that DO and this WORKS to a degree. When you switch screens the icons will not change of course so this is just a partial workaround but it is enough to start playing. :) FANTASTIC.

-UPDATE 10/2/2013 (morning) I have uploaded a 3.7 meg file containing the Synchromesh modified panel icons to Space Sim Central, it is available here: http://spacesimcentral.com/ssc/files/file/988-ffed3d-panel-icons-partialworkaround/ You can then download the small file and copy the \panelicons directory to replace your one and voila.... you will have some icons. :) This will save you some 200 meg of download if you already have a functional (but icon-less) version of FFED3D :)

-UPDATE 10/2/2013 (almost midnight). I have just tested out AndyJ's r60 build and ...... YES the ICONS WORK !! They change on all screens as they should. This could possibly be a FULL fix. We just need a little more testing as AndyJ is putting in improvements. WOW this is SUCH great news !!!!!!!!!!!

Hopefully AndyJ can get this up on Space Sim Central to bring smiles hopefully to many other icon-less players.

So how is that TWO great solutions in ONE WEEK !!! One partial and one possibly FULL. WOW !!! The Elite community ROCKS !

-UPDATE 21/2/2013. I have just tried Ittiz's Beta 1 from the torrent he created (See this post http://forums.frontier.co.uk/showpost.php?p=74167&postcount=905). With Bounder reminding me to set Aspectfix to 0 and Astro Steve reminding me to disable visual themes............... EVERYTHING WORKS. Icons work, don't need to click under options to get them working, the fuel range marker (purple circle) works, and it does not crash with in minutes. YAY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you Ittiz, Astro Steve, Bounder, AndyJ and Synchromesh you are all stars !

[Legacy entries from original post]
My system is:
OS is Windows 7 64 bit 8 GIG RAM.
Laptop Computer Toshiba Pro L750 i7 Processor
Graphics card NVidia GeForce GT525M (Latest drivers)
Direct X 11 (latest as of the date I write this)

Have been playing without the icons but it would really be great if I could somehow get them displaying.

FF3D3D is amazing and I salute the efforts of the programmers. They are truly keeping the ELITE spirit and bringing it to a wider audience.

If there are any other suggestions to try to get the icons to display (bar usuaing another computer obviously) I would **LOVE** to know as everything else worked perfectly bar the icons.

Thank you all in advance.

latest update to includes Synchromesh's version 2 which mostly solves the problem. 7/2/2013

You're not the only one to have had this problem and from your post you seem to have tried everything I can think of.

As one last attempt, make sure you've got the panel icons in the folder textures>panelicons

Otherwise, dunno...

Thanks for the point Steve, I went to the directories of all three separate downloads I had and they all have the icons in the textures. I of course even tried the different panels in the hope icons would come up but nothing.

There has not seemed to be an update for a long time with this unfortunately. :-(

If *only* those icons would work! :-(

I found it depends on your resolution. I thought they didn't work, until i tried different resolution and they did, but only in certain parts of the icon.

I think the icon position and click area's are not absolutes but a percentage of xy coordinates depending on res, and its not quite accurate.

As I wrote on the original post, they don't appear at all. Nothing. Zip. You can press the button on the panel that all works but there are no icons so you don't know what does what. It is a very common problem many many people have I'm afraid.

I'm just going through all the parts of my FFED3D install which seem to relate to the control panel and its icons.

In your "MODELS" folder, do you have 4 x PNG files called "panel", "panelF2", "panelF3" and "panelF4" plus a file called "panel.x" ?

Hello again everyone.

Yes Assimilator as per my original post I tried all combinations of compatability mode to no avail and yes I even tried running it in virtual box under XP, still no icons.

Bikky. I don't think it will help because all my files are prefectly correct with other people's installs. This is clearly an issue with the program not working with some computers as many have this fault.

Steve. The models directory does NOT have 4 PNG files. In fact the MODELS directory has NO PNG files at all. Besides LOTS of directories there is only panel.x in there and two other "x" files.

However I doubt that is the problem because I tried my SAME installation on 4 different computers and only on ONE of them does the SAME installation work with the icons. It is therefore not a question of missing files unfortunately. It is definitely an issue with resolution/programming that we all hope the original writers will address, however there has not been any updates for a long long time so it looks like I am snookered. :-(

Oh before anyone suggests it, that single computer that it did work on was not mine and no they won't sell it to me.

Thank you all for the suggestions though I do appreciate it. I am just hoping someone fixes the problem :-(

It is very much appreciated Assimilator. I want to try everything I can.
I can still play without the icons, it is just a little annoying that's all.

:)
