i downloaded those 3 .rar files from that second link from the OP and got a virus alert for
TR/Hijacker.Gen
while extracting. i didn't read all the posts from the start to here - just in case i missed something and the usual berating starts

i'm downloading, but it's a bit slow. i won't get a chance to test until later, because i have to go shortly and i can only download 1 at a time.

I bet the icons work for you.
There is a glitch that on some systems you cannot see any icons on the main control panel, it is VERY annoying, I had to stop playing it because of the glitch after trying an exhaustive list of trying to fix it (you can read about it on the thread I made called something like Missing icons on FFE despite all efforts".

file. i know i should delete that file from the archive and extract the rest, but once it has been compromised i tend to stay away from the download.
i'm trying the second link (spacesimcentral) but i should be doing some C++. i'm planning to go to college next september trying my hand at programming. although at 41½ my brain has slowed down too much and this C++ is testing it.
@styggron: you got further than me. although i'm sure i played FFE on the PC years ago. just don't remember all that well.
EDIT: the second link downloaded and extracted without any viruses detected!

So only the space sim central package is virus free? Well, only the admin there can mod that file so I guess thats why its stayed virus free. I will let him know. Glad you got a clean copy in the end
Glad it worked for you. Out of all the computers I tested it on, it only worked on one (which was not one I owned or able to purchase). Otherwise as you can see on my other thread, the icons just don't appear no matter what I do. I can still play it but it makes it tricky when you cannot see ANY of the icons appear on any panel. <sigh> :-(

Geraldine let me know about the issues with a lot of the FFED3D downloads being infected with viruses. I know personally the files that I package or test are checked, I cannot say all of SSC files are virus free because I haven't checked them all personally but I do try too when I can.
I took a lot of time packaging the FFED3D game for everyone and download and tested all mods and integrated the mod manager with the game so it worked generally with little issue. I know some people have issues but I think it is more hardware related than software. I have yet to download any of the newer builds of FFED3D and test them but I will get around to it eventually.
Nice to know that SSC is one of the last places to get some of these games because I try to save them all if I am allowed too for everyone to enjoy. It's more really finding the help to seek out publishers and developers of the classics and abandoned games to see if we can eventually host a copy for download.
Next month I will probably plan a backup of the file area, that usually takes 2-3 days of downloading via ftp

This is a program that intercepts and complements the original exe file! Safety is guaranteed by the developers of FFE D3D.
It was the only way to improve the game befor the new build release (which we expect).
However, work on the development of "FFE D3D start!.exe" have been stopped. Now the authors are working on a new build.

That's good to know, though it's somewhat academic for me as one of the compressed files comes up with a "file corrupted" error when I try to extract it

as i was extracting the files avira warned it was a virus. if you have had debates with others about it not being a virus - fineOh, Mother of God!.....

At least we all know (thanks to Targ) its ok after all. One thing though still bothers me. Why didn't the SSC download not trouble your virus checker? As far as I am aware the SSC archive is the same as the others you tried. I might need to check with the SSC admin though.

This file captures the data of the original exe file and replace the data on their own data.
Including This program monitors and adjusts the pressing a button in the Elite.
Theoretically, it can catch the game text and replace it with the text in a foreign language.
Basically, the program adds a splash starting and lettering on the boot, with the starry sky and the music.
This file made mr. TeсhnoMag (he's doing a new build), when he did not have the free source code. He had to do a file-hook.

If a program is recognized as a "virus" - is not necessarily a "virus". For example, this may be a crack to the pirate game.
For security, you can run the file in the SandBox mode, if it is in Avira or firewall.

My understanding is the the Elite Russia download includes a program which intercepts the main exe and makes some changes, as explained in Targ's post. Many virus checkers will flag that up as A Bad Thing
AFAIK the SSC download does not have this program...
