The Formidine Rift - Part 2

Easier to check first if it is a binary star system with "warm red" and "actinic blue" stars, with a habitable planet, and if it is then worry about population etc. Haven't found such a binary yet. i am guessing the stars will be named after a mythological nephew and niece, based on Greek, Roman, Arab/Islamic mythology or the like. Or possibly named nephew and niece but in a different language (Latin, Greek, Arabic, etc.). I have Han Zen searching out possible suspect familial relations. ;-)

It's quite hard to make sense of, since everybody are related in mythology (particularly Greek). Inbreeding and incest must have been bad for their genes. No wonder they are gone.

Found a bunch of galaxy maps, most of them are oriented having sol toward 12:00. Just to make sure, we are looking for the rift closer to 120deg or 150deg, or in between? In which angle does the RR line point away relative from sol?

ok, ok

I think the RR line points at about 129°.

I just noticed something yesterday and I figure it might be worth mentioning. Apparently Drew rep'd a post of mine in the original Formidine thread.

So does that mean the Heart & Soul nebs relate to his "consider the core of the problem" statement?
Well, we have been looking at gates... The Heart & Soul nebula certainly looks like a gate to me...

I'm thinking more every day that the RR line is just a pointer in the general direction of the rift, and not necessarily to be taken literal. If H&S could be a gate, we would then be looking for something that might even be closer to Vig's Beacon, or the direction of Point Decision. After all, the Rift does stretch for quite a bit towards the east.

Well I'm at the H&S nebula area now ,looking back towards the core i see this

looks like the jewels in a tiara to me ?. It looks like its the IC1805 open cluster . what if the rift is the gap between the heart and soul nebulas, and the "core of the problem" and " watch your six" mean to look back at the galaxy core after going between the H&S nebulas ?

Im on my way back to IC1805 now for a closer look

I think it would make a lot of sense, because :

  • We know that a ship with 25lyr range is enough to find it. So the gap between the galactic arms seems strange to me.
  • Makes sense of watch your six and core of the problem.

What remains is : what to do with the formidine (fear/dread), 7 veils and the whole greek mythos references and kahina (queen/soothsayer/priestess).

Looks promising. Nice find.[up]

It looks like the open cluster is named Melotte 15 ('Open Cluster Melotte 15 at the core of IC 1805'). IC 1805 is the Hart Nebula.

I like the idea too, but I think it would contradict the message about having to plot a way through the rift and there being no stars for dozens of light years...

I had been avoiding this thread for a while until I'd read Reclamation, but seeing as I finished it last night I'll be paying attention again.

Some thoughts on the comments...

1. I suspect that if we find whatever is out there, it will be protected, and we're likely to be attacked. This, I think, is the main reason behind the "watch your six" comment.
2. There seems to be a lot of speculation at times about the continuing theme of Kahina not wanting to be late. I suspect this is just a character trait (based on one of Drew's comments about mainly being a character writer). This would make sense as something to set her apart from most Imperials who like to be "fashionably late" to meetings and such, as mentioned near the beginning of the book.

Nothing particularly helpful, but just some of the assumptions I'm currently working under.

It could be a navigational marker, that you have to keep visible between the two nebulae or something?

Yeah, if you google famous niece/nephew in mythology, it returns a bunch of results on incest among the families of the Greek gods.

I flew through that cluster last weekend. I noticed it on my way to H&S from the bubble. It kind of seems like a nebula type of cluster without the gas. Lots of B and O class stars in a cluster. It seemed like a point of interest to me at the time so I hung around that area and jumped through a few systems, but didn't see anything out of the ordinary. That being said, I only made it to a fraction of the systems. Probably needs further investigation.

That's interesting. I wonder what a line from that cluster through the H&S nebula looks like compared to the R&R line.

I've just got a very simple idea: What if "the core of the proBlem is just the 'B' as its the letter in the middle?
Could be one piece of the greater puzzle that wants to tells us 'what we are looking for is in a B-class system'...

The core of 'the problem' could also be the 2 letters 'ro' (rho cassiopeiae?)

I was over there and saw that a few weeks ago before I knew about any of this, bit gutted as I am now really close to the core :(

Also,

ep, p => Rot 13 => ro, c => rho cassiopeiae*.

As an aside : it may be that there is something to find, but that it's not visible in map mode, only on realistic mode.

*I know, it's for right on, commander but the right on commander also appears at the end of the elite reclamation snipet about the rift coordinates.

IMO : things are so murky and open to over-interpretation that we'll find connections all over the place. Space Madness strikes again.
