The Formidine Rift - Part 2

Anyhow. Lets get up to date on this.

It IS possible to get inside a Black Hole, and not just hit the exclusion zone.

This doesn't seem to be a bug. Certain Black holes can always be entered. Though it would SEEM that they are very rare.

This might be because you need a Hole of at least 0.0001 solar radii, and somewhere between 15-30 solar masses. That works out about 650 odd meters wide. Anything smaller and your ship just wont fit. But, alas, we need more trials.

This might be because stellar Black holes come in two different types. Those with Spin, and those without. Spinning black holes (and of course, being black holes you wont see any spin - only the gravitational effects) are much more stable than static Black Holes. They also theoretically are much more likely to have the correct conditions to produce a stable wormhole. But theoretically rarer too.

The game seems to reflect that.

The problem that we have is this: We have tried jumping to a known Black hole that cannot be entered. (Presuming that if you go in an innie, you must come out an outie) just by making a system lock. That doesn't work. The commander might need a full system scan first and actually select the black hole from inside the system map. (my buddy didn't have that) We also tried it with a tiny black hole (too small?), that my friend had recorded, but to no avail.

Anyhow, its all very attractive rubbish (After crossing the rift a few times) looking for a hidden mechanic to...fast travel. If there are any Cmdrs headed out, stop at PHRIO PHOE AA-A H24 (Large outie), do a scan and continue. At least you will have a reference system then if you hit TRADGOI AA-A H0 A (Large innie) on your travels.

Gypsy out.

I agree with you on the idea that there may be something to discover about black holes (if not a bug). But I do not think it is related to the Rift.
Apparently, there are theoretically three types of wormholes (thank you Wikipédia):

- The Schwarzschild wormhole impassable. So, certainly looks like a blackhole.
- The Reissner-Nordstrøm or Kerr-Newman Wormhole, passable in one direction, which may contain a Schwarzschild wormhole. The entrance is a black hole, the exit is a white hole. If a white hole existed, it would certainly already discovered.
- Lorentz wormhole with negative mass, passable in both directions. I think this is the thing that comes closest to what we might found, two black holes without exclusion zone could allow the crossing.

If I find another black hole without exclusion zone in the rift, I would do the test. Otherwise I'll look for one on my way back in the human bubble.

For the imperial data banks Facece might be another candidate. As some kind of military capitol it seems a good place to store your servers. Although I'd still vote for Achenar

Can anyone point me to a system with an enterable BH close to the formidine bridge? I kinda have limited time to browse the galmap with the AOE in my cargo hold.

I did all that and it seems to be something persistent. And I tried on SgrA * without success.

Thank you, this is it, no exclusion zone. So it's something known.
What happened, when you left the hole? Have you tried to jump from there (I vaguely remember you had) or chosen another system's black hole as target to jump? *wraps more tinfoil around your ship*

In any case, that is just magnificent place to be.

This clarification regarding holofacs from Drew got me thinking:

Holofac is the Holographic display technology in the Elite universe. (An amalgam of Holographic and Facsimile I assume). This is able to render cockpit HUDs as you see in ED, (or in the adverts outside stations, CQC banners and the docking bay numbers) and also full scale live 3D video impressions of people as referred to in the various bits of official fiction (I've always imagined it as similar to R2D2s "You're my only hope" holographic display as since in StarWars)

I was unclear what exactly holofacs were before this, especially since it seems to jump from video to text in the book. Since it can be text and it can be rendered in the cockpit HUD, I think it is safe to assume that the news articles in stations are holofacs.

In the Elite: Reclamation epilogue it is clear that Salome paid to get access to the famed holofac:

'This is a secure Imperial data bank, if we get caught ...'
'And I had to pay a lot of money to get an access code.'
Salome continued to type furiously. Information flickered into view around them.

It is possible that the coordinates were embedded in the text of the image and that we are only given the video's audio here. If this is the case, then the holofac text is in the game somewhere (all the clues are there for us to find). Potentially it is on the Imperial world where Salome accessed this data, and potentially it can be purchased.

Does anybody know how long donating money to factions has been in the game? If it came post 2014 then we can rule this out. If not, then has anybody ever seen the available news articles change as a result of donating money to a station? It could be that this leads us to getting some actual coordinates.

As I understand donations are just a quick and easy way to build up your reputation with the governing minor faction. It will slightly improve the influence of the faction but I don't think it's possible to bribe someone this way

This is a good theory it kind of ties in with the rift not being permit locked but needing the right person you might not need a rank to get to the rift bit you might need to align to the right faction to get the co ordinates.

This would also clear up something that's bugged me about neefing a clipper (as that's what Salome had) that wouldn't make sense since in the story the old woman had been to the rift not salome

I think I have tried everything that could be tried for now (with Gipsy12), except targeting another black hole without exclusion zone.
The inside of the black hole is nice to see, but it's limited to that. For the rest it is an empty area that makes think about something not finished or bugged.

Remember that the riddle can be solved just with galnet stuff, altough clues in Elite:Reclamation can help.

Then Drew is heavy into astronomy, so I would expect clues to strongly relate to astronomy/constellations.

I defiantly think there's merit to this. Hypotheticly if there's going to be ailian space fairing races in game...witch is 100%. Wether thay be war like or peaceful, there still have to be a mechanic to get the traiders/combat commander's there faster.

I can't see a traider taking 2 months to the other side of the milky way then 4 months back with a hold full of ailians artifacts just to make credits.
I also can't see a "new" F.S.D. being introduced for 400 trill credits thay would leave a large percentage of the player Base unable to participate in.
Now having a fast travel mechanic in game would work. A little like (sorry) wow....once u have been there...u can fast travel there. But in this instance it's not a zone...it's massive...and encourages exploration.
I wouldn't put it passed frontier to have this mechanic in place now and see if anyone discovers it. And have a backup plan using galnet if push comes to shove and the time comes it's needed nobody had figured it out.

Or....it could be all wrong lol. Defiantly worth looking into as we all explore

Sorry bud - I was simplifying it to the Schwarzschild radius... Which all black hole types have to abide by(with current understanding) it is simply the limit where light or information can no longer escape from the gravitational pull. Or did I miss something?

Bummer, but maybe I'll encourage my scaredy butt closer to one next time. Seems harmless, even if hauntingly eery.

Have you guys tried 'flying' through the black hole in the heart nebula? I'm there right now. It's a high mass BH I think (2.7227 sun masses?)

I don't have the nerve to try it ;p

I have not tried the black hole in Heart nebula. But, it's easy to try, you only have to approach very slowly from the black hole and wait to get bump out of supercruise. I don't take damages in this way.

How do I know I'm getting closer to human space??
Wreckage in every system.....:p

Don't thay know it was 5 pence for a plastic bag back in 2016?? I thought that would have solved this problem?!? :)

What if each black hole is matched with another one? One way...in and out?. I've no idia...just throwing it out there.....this is my last tin of onion head.......hence my visit to the bubnle......dribble dribble..

No, no, you're absolutely right regarding the Schwarzschild radius.
The only difference with what I mean is that I do the dinstinction between black hole and wormhole, it seems wormholes are not subject to the same rules. But I may fool me, I am far from having the necessary knowledge for this kind of thing.

I was under the understanding that wormhole only exsist even in theoretical terms on the quaountem scail. Sorry can't spell. There's no astro physics that can make a wormhole on out scale possible?

For quite some time I'm reconsidering our focus on the R-R line and it's significancy, the galaxy arms etc. I think that with this statement "CMDRs may wish to consider the, ahem, core of the problem." Drew tried to turn our focus on the core worlds. Most of us were too eager to solve the mystery and rushed headless into the void (including me). IMO this "Whether it is found or not depends entirely on who goes looking." implies, that the person need to know some information, that could be obtained only in the core worlds or via cracking the Galnet articles about senator Kahina. Remember, that the clues from the book are only complementary. We took the R-R line and other things from the book as solid facts, maybe they are not so solid.

I'd go back into the Bubble, to search for the main clues, but my RL is quite hectic and does not allow me to invest so much time into the game, so I will remain in the void and try my luck. :)

I hate the fact that I can't put into words what I want to say. I come across as a kid and it's annoying lol :)

I think worm hole could exist in larger scale in theory too, problem is just how it stays open. The current understanding is afaik that while normal black holes more or less cause a worm hole, no one could travel through as it would collapse too soon. Worm hole would require something to keep it open a bit longer, exotic matter was proposed (I don't remember exactly if it was something else?).
