The Galnet News Thread

GALNET officially sucks. I took a trip all the way out there yesterday just to see what all the fuss was about to find a highly populated system with nothing going on. I scanned CMDR's for hours and nobody even was carrying a bounty or anything. Now I'm hundred of lightyears away from my base and fleet because the game itself advertised an interesting location based on nothing. :( Seriously cannot even be bothered to go back to my fleet now and I'm thinking I may just wait it out until something actually happens worth visiting or until the Wings update. Really soured me on the game though right now since this was the first time I tried using the in game features to plan my own goal, hunting a pirate down, but then when I saw the GALNET news post it seemed like the perfect opportunity to try setting my own goal. Instead I found a massive collection CMDR's who all did the same as me wondering what the hell we were even doing there. I was just looking to help out the underdog and hope for some action along the way.

well thats nice. so anyone want to talk about Lave? and like combat stuff? and WAR!?!?!?!

I have been shooting people tonight. Not terribly sucessfully mind you, but I have been shooting people. One of the first people who I interdicted did know what was going on and spoke French, so we parted ways amicably, but most people were just confused.

Vive la Space-France et donne moi toute votre anguillles!

Everyone is exactly the same. Men and women are identical (uh..oh I said men before women!!). Pale skinned people aren't white. Dark skinned people aren't...that other colour. Australian's aren't from Australia. No one is more or less intelligent than anyone else. All religions are equal unless yours is Islam. Everyone is unique! You came 28th in the race? Yay! You're a winner, here have a medal!! You just commit a crime but hurt your leg while doing it, that's OK just sue the property owner and their public liability insurance will cover it. "Everything is awesooooome!"

If all that made absolutely no sense to you then perhaps there is hope for you yet. Our "modern" society is pathetic...

Beside jokes and personal sensibilities, we have to take this galnet news as it is: a relay of a rumor.
"Word circulated recently" is the introduction of this news, don't forget that.

It is an excellent opportunity for some role play in this area, just imagine how your pilot would feel after a such news. Perhaps he doesn't care at all. Perhaps he would like to participate on a side or on another. Perhaps he would just try to calm this tension. Maybe some pure traders would now feel that Lave is risky for business... And pirates a good opportunity for stealing goods from injured fighters!

Just an event which can create some good fun! Enjoy!

Ehem....whilst you kind people are focussed on each other fighting for Lave, we Thargons in our Thargoid ships are quietly surrounding your hereditary home system Sol. Any day now the sounds of our Blood Blatters (think long musical horns with spikes, doubling as a weapon) will be heard on Earth and Mars and you will all then benefit from our regulated servitude (similar to the human Imperial Slavery system) for the glory of the Thargoid Empire.

But whatever, what is done is done and ill be the mature guy and keep working on my original idea and this time forums wont be used until the idea is complete.

Thanks for the heads up, and being the mature guy in this. I'm actually very pleased that you have chosen to keep on with the your original idea.. Invasion du systeme de Lave.. wasn't it? It's catchy, Its bold, its foreign and exotic.. I like it! I've always been kind of partial to impromptu parties, my Imperial upbringing i guess. I shall be sure to keep a close eye on the Galnet feed, they seem to be pretty quick on breaking news, and I wont want to miss the party this time around, was away on business for the last 1. Hope to see you there, ill be the guy 'seeing it as it is' I shall don 4 pips to weapons and keep all ports open so you cant miss me.

Regards

Lave [Brandy] Never felt So Good

GoonNetNews here, once more entailing some more news on the situation of Lave right now. As of now, we have heard pilots singing songs of victory! It seems that they've discovered ancient music discs of the past, and here's what we heard from the celebrations.

///STARTING TRACK///

Baby, Lave always felt so good,
And I'd die if it never could,
Not like you Scoop me, Scoop me,
Oh, Baby, Lave always felt so fine,
And I'd die if it never fight,
Not like you scoop me, scoop me,

And the rare are gonna be just fine,
Gotta scoop, gotta 'cruise, gotta bruise,

'Cause, baby, every time I Scoop, in and out of my cargo, in out, baby
Tell me, if you really brandy it's in and out my life, in out, baby
So, baby, yes, Lave always felt so good.

And I'd die if it never could,
Not like you Scoop me, Scoop me,

And I'd die if it never fight,
Not like you scoop me, scoop me,

And the rares through thick and thin
Gotta scoop, gotta 'cruise, gotta bruise,
I can't jump it, 'Cause

Thank you War Hero CMDR SpaceTexas for that rousing song. The Lave Liberation Front of the Revolutionary Jontunheim Resistance appreciates the morale boost.

Vive la France-espace et donne moi toute votre anguillles!

Definitely it has improved. I made note of it in a thread that Michael responded to, I think it started failing after a minor build because I stopped getting bounty news and such.

Hopefully someone continues to develop this as there is a huge potential to make it fun, informative, social and bring the PU more to life!

Original Design Discussion wish list:

  • GOALS
    • Provide the player with useful and relevant information about the game world
    • Present that information in a varied and interesting fashion
    • Immerse the player in the game world
    • Be extensible to allow for extra content/features as the game develops

    BASIC SYSTEM
    • Newsfeeds in Elite: Dangerous display the latest in-game events to the player
    • The newsfeeds system revolves around two core elements:
    • Events
      • Events are things that happen in the game world.
      • These can come from:
        • Direct player action
        • Galaxy Simulation
        • The Event Injection System
    • Channels
      • Channels are the presentation layer for the event.
      • Channels determine what news items are displayed and how the news item is reported.

    EVENTS
    • Events are the data for the newsfeeds
    • Events are scored based on the relevance to the player
    • Events affecting them or people on their friends list, or relating to a nearby location, will be scored more highly
    • The player is able to adjust the threshold at which events are shown per category (probably as ‘low’, ‘medium’ and ‘high’).
    • Events are organised into types, a summary of types is provided below:
      • Player Driven
        • Mission completion – this would be filtered by some value so only significant missions are reported
        • Major kills – destroying a highly ranked opponent (human or NPC) would be a newsworthy event
        • Player death – the death of highly ranked players would be a news item
        • Career events – for example collecting bounties, major trades or exploring a new system
        • Ranking – major ranking increases, prioritising players known to our player
        • Opening/discovery of a new dark system enabling a new trade route
      • Player Indirect
        • Traffic – unusually high or low numbers of visitors
        • Piracy – piracy and anti-piracy stats for region
        • Economy – Prices up/down, surpluses and shortages
        • Stability – function of crime and clean up rates
        • Political – changes to laws in a system (can be as a result of a civil war etc)
      • Injected
        • Background Simulation
        • Major events- these may have their own templates
          • Famine
          • Civil war (What’s so civil about war anyway?)
          • Stability
          • Major military movements or interdiction of a system
          • New space station or city construction

    CHANNELS
    • The channel decides what news items are available from the events list and how they are presented.
    • The channels allow us to create newsfeeds specific to player’s interests as well as more general news. Here are some example channels.
      • Imperial Times – The flagship Imperial newsfeed, it features high profile stories focused on the Empire.
      • FNN (Federation News Network) – One of many Federation news channels.
      • The Daily Hunter – Bounty hunter related news.
    • Each inhabited system will have a procedurally generated local news channel for reporting only local events.
      • Certain channels may be tagged so that they are only available in certain systems
    • To be considered is the possibility of including some mark-up in the templates to allow branding and visual distinction between the different channels, but this may be considered for future updates.

    ACCESSING THE NEWS FEEDS
    • Newsfeeds are accessed from the player’s cockpit. There is the direct interface part of the tertiary screens as well as hooks via the galaxy maps for accessing news feeds for different systems.

    EXAMPLE NEWS ITEM
Here are two different example stories using the same event but different templates:
    Daily Lave
    Pirate Menace Struck a Blow
Today a blow was struck against pirate forces when police engaged and killed the known pirate RedBeard. In a statement the local Trader’s representative said “This is wonderful news. Traders throughout the system will all rest easy knowing RedBeard won’t be out there waiting for them on their next run.”
    The Daily Hunter
Lave bounty update – RedBeard taken down!
Another pirate bit the dust in Lave today when the infamous RedBeard was taken down in a furious battle. Although the bounty was relatively small the traders of Lave will be feeling safer today.
Players will have control of detail – to show stories just in headline form, or in more detail (by expanding them), to show them in full as above.

    ADVERTS
    • Adverts are content added to channels to provide colour and variety. They should also add some humour as seen in the previous games. They also add authenticity and depth by expanding the fiction in the universe.
    • These come in two forms:
      • Authored - Adverts that have been authored (we can get the fans involved in this as well as write them internally, and possibly include real ones adjusted for the fiction).
      • Procedural - These are template adverts that are used to generate ads for local commodities. For example Lavian Brandy, these are generated from the same system to create local specialities, along with a variety of templates to reduce repetition.

Realism? GalNet news has officially broke the laws of "space physics".

By reading up on the GalNet news, Commander Kamzel has deployed a help signal far on the other side of the galaxy.

Wait, hold on a second.

I'm sorry, but if Kamzel if going to send out a communications signal on the other side of a galaxy that has 400+ billion star systems within it, he should know it's going to take way more than a long time for that signal to reach colonized space. Space is extremely vast and big, the distances to be traveled are so great that even light or radio waves take a while getting there. It takes around eight minutes for radio waves to travel from the Earth to the Sun, and four years to get from here to the nearest star...add those numbers up with how many stars you must jump to get to the other side of the galaxy with the most expensive frameshift drive. Hell, this even goes for the GalNet news sources themselves.

Does it make sense that we instantly got this explorer's signal from the other side of a large galaxy?

Help signals are drones with fuel scoops who retrace your steps back to the last known station. Problem solved, get back to your game.
