I've only got a Radeon HD 6670. While that fine for what I use my computer for I think it will be the thing that needs upgrading first if I want to run Elite Dangerous at its best. I am currently looking at the R9 280x which I think will be great since I am not really what can be called a serious gamer.

Okay, I've been doing some research and I've come to the conclusion that the following is the best mid-range price/performance option at the moment:

Radeon HD 7790, 1GB DDR5, benchmark 3,006
£88 from Amazon

There is nothing below this at good value that I can find - everything is either not that much cheaper or just far far less powerful. If you want to go above this you have to spend at least £150 (though that may be worth it if you want 2GB DDR5 - the Radeon 7870 and R9 270X are both good choices). And beyond that for more power you'll want to spend £190 on a GTX 760.

I just spotted a 4gb version of the R9 270x for £161 from scan.co.uk so I think I will go for that card since its more or less the same price as their 2gb cards and I'm assuming that graphics card memory is the same as system memory where more is better. However I could be mistaken about that

It will allow you to use higher resolutions and higher quality textures. I believe it also has an influence on AA as well.

What the hell is a graphics card......? :S

They already come with the computer right?

..... Im in trouble aren't I....

I voted maybe as it's really to do with how much you are willing/able to spend. The game should be made to be cutting edge, if it wasn't what would be the point? If we always just did 'average' things would never get improved which would be boring for starters.

As Liqua says 'you get what you pay for'. (I thought that before I saw Liqua's post!)

I would say yes. :p

Some computers do have graphics cards on the motherboard, as do all laptops. But some desktop motherboards don't and purchase of a dedicated graphics card would be required. You can still do this for one with an embedded card and the BIOS will normally disable the on-board one once a discrete one is detected.

Since I last posted this I have been looking around for a better deal and I came across a R9 270x with 4gb ram compared to a R9 280x with just 2gb and the 280x was £40 more expensive so I think I'll be going for the cheaper card.

Nvidia Geforce 780Ti Barry White edition?

I suggest you Get It On...

(As in your PC, so you can like play games with it...)

Um, I'll shut up now...;)

Its more beautiful than my French Lady.

As a Francophile I find this hard to believe ,but maybe you could create a new outfit for your Lady including multi fan and heatsink arrangements ,this may increase her beauty in your eye's

That's not something you would want to wear outside, especially if it was raining!

And there are too many things to catch it on your daily commute. ;)

Personally I would wait, if your in the alpha or beta then wait until you got access you never know it may be ok save some money also.

I also have a GTX 460 1Gb , I'm going to wait to see how it gets on with the beta.

Most games I play I can handle pretty high settings ok.
