Greetings Commander,

I upgraded my PC as it was due and got the following:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sapphire-11196-09-40G-HD7950-Vapox-X-Graphics/dp/B0091MFBZC

Not come across anything yet that i cannot run in high settings for a long period of time, granted i'm not in the Alpha so cannot directly compare it with ED, but i am sure anything that is 2Gb+ is going to be fine :)

Kro

7950's are also decent cards. I've got a 7970 which is a slight step up from it and performs extremely well (although I'm going to buy another soon so I can xfire them to run a 1440p display :) )

What's the best NVIDIA card for around £100-£150 and how much of an upgrade would it be over my current card?
Quick peek at PC PartPicker tells that GTX660 is the best NVidia you can get for ~£150 :

If you look at it from purely theoretical viewpoint, not so much of an upgrade:

But if you believe Tom's Hardware, it should be worth the cost:

Thanks. I'll probably hold off upgrading for a bit and see how the market is in a few months - the 6850 is still a pretty decent card. :)

Was toying with getting new card to play this, as i think my current 460GTX may struggle.

whats your opinion on this card?

I've been watching all the alpha videos of the game on Kerrash Landings youtube channel and I am pretty sure he mentioned that the card you are interested in is the card that he has so it will definitely run the game fine.

Personally I've been seriously considering the R9 270x 4gb card because I thought that 1 4gb card would be a lot better than having 2 2gb cards in a sli\crossfire configuration because that would mean that I would almost certainly have to upgrade my psu as well and the more money I can save the better I think.

I recently bought a laptop with the GTX 760m in it (innit) and am very pleased. Alpha a smooooooooooooth.

It is also perfectly happy with my other games. Win!

I'll be going for a new laptop too: what did you get? Looking around Asus seem to be quite good (Alienware a bit too hardcore for me!)

There has been a lot of good advice here but not much on laptops (I know, less bang for your buck, but...)

Any thoughts?

Graphics Card

I'm having a little difficulty with my graphics card. I have a 3/4 screen set up which is primary'd by the on board Intel motherboard card. I have an Nvidia card which is output to 2 secondary monitors. The onboard Intel card is naff, but I think the game is outputting through it even though I select the secondary in the set up. The Nvidia card is not much better and only has 1 Gb but should be able to run the game in its lowest settings. I have a few questions to this effect:-

1) How do I make the game default to lowest settings namely 640x480 but allow it to be stretched to fullscreen anyway? This way I can get the game moving at a decent pace I am not bothered about window scratches or frost etc.

2) Which would be the best budget card that has at least 2Gb that I should buy to get it going in the future? I don't have any money at all really and would be very very grateful of a donation that would at least get this alpha moving.

ED: does Cobra support Nv or AMD specific graphics card features?

Hi all,

I'm close to making my new PC purchase for Elite Dangerous (I'm in Beta so need it fairly soon).

A key decision left is the graphics card, in particular whether to go for Nvidia or AMD. Is there any information on what FD's Cobra game engine does or doesn't support? Eg does it go with the lowest common denominator or support proprietary extensions, such as PhysX, Mantle, etc?

Thanks for any help/advice.

BTW my current leaning is AMD (Radeon HD 8970M), for price/performance value, but I'll be looking for confirmation that driver situation is ok.

New Nvidia Maxwell GPUs: Prices & details leaked!

Here you go.

Warning! Google translation from Hungarian, prices in Euros.

All will come with 2GB DDR5 and will be officially announced next week Feb 18th.

No benchmarks yet, but I suspect places like Tom's Hardware are under some sort of NDA until next week.

More details HERE and HERE.

Preliminary benchmark for the GTX 750 Ti: P5963 in 3D Mark 11, so above the performance of a GeForce GTX 570, just below a Radeon HD 7850 - whilst running at about 75 watts.

Is that this will be enough to play ED with all the details ?

:S

Well, after reading several articles in the press, this new GPU (Maxwell) is interesting for the energy consumption. Allows everybody to play current games with an affordable price. In conclusion, it is recommended to wait the future versions more muscular. For high-end performance with the benefits of reduced energy consumption compared to Kepler

Yeah I hope they put out the new Maxwell cards soon. Full HD for OR in 96hz will need some power :p
The new Maxwell based Geforce 750 ti looks really nice, but still doesn't seem to be worth upgrading from my Geforce 570

I have access to the beta 1, but I think I must to wait for the gamma, before that the cards based on Maxwell more muscular are released. Too bad I will sacrifice 2 betas and I shall content with walking in the bétas, with my GPU Intel HD 4600. But I really want to benefit from the reduced energy consumption and the reduced temperature also while benefiting from the power
