Which GFX Card?

Ok, so I have a computer with quad core Xeon processors X3220 (2.4GHz), one empty PCI-E slot. On-boad gfx.

What GFX card am I looking for to run ED in fairly good resolution (around 1600 x whatever) with settings to max(ish)?

Saw some issues with AMD cards & ED. nVidia seems to be a good brand, but some cards have issues. What is the best bet for, say, a $150-$200 card? :S

$200 Canadian is about £110 GBP.

Best graphics cards for the money: Feb 2014.

Nvidia have just released their Maxwell cards, so they don't appear in the above, although there are reviews on the site. They run a similar best of article every month.

It really depends when you need the new card, best to leave it as long as possible to get the best bang for your buck.

You might want to have a look around in the big graphics card thread too.

I'm sure others will give specific recommendations shortly.

I think for 150 bucks the new low power Geforce 750 TI might be a good bet?

Personally I'll wait till the release of the new more powerful geforce maxwell based cards, since playing with oculus rift / 1440p monitor in 96 hz will require some more juice. You could also get a cheap used card until the new generation is released.

nope, unless for some reason you really really really want low power.

OP, regarding what to buy, depends on which side of the pond you are. If in America, probably the best bet is nVidia due to the complete price gouging that cryptocurrency is causing to AMD cards. On the european side, AMD is likely to be the best buy for those price levels.

And don't worry that ED will work just fine with AMD and nVidia. Anything recent at least :p

Personally speaking, I am going to play it with just the onboard gfx as I have seen a few videos of it working nicely at medium settings and once the final release is out, a better judgement and more money put aside will help in getting the best card for the job. If it plays well at high res, I may upgrade the monitor first as it is quite an old model.

I had to replace my trusty old PSU when i fitted my GTX660, it was fine if i ran it on basic settings but if i turned up the graphics the PC would reboot.

PSU couldn't supply enough amps on the 12v rail, older style ones saw most of the demand for power on 5v.

Hi egerrits,

I've moved you thread to the hardware section and merged it into the GFX Card thread, loads of great advice in here so you should be able to find the card you're looking for. :)

On graphics cards, I have an Asus Nvidia 650 GTX and I'm playing the alpha, but really my card isn't good enough because at the best of times I'm getting 20+ fps but most of the time it's sub 15 and has been known to dip 8-12 from time to time.

I am certainly no expert on graphics cards but I'd say my card is probably the minimum anyone would want but ideally it should be better. If it's 20fps at best with only combat, you can imagine what it'll be like once space gets filled with ships and space stations and stuff.

Been thinking of getting a new card for a while, then they release the GTX 750 Ti.. which by all accounts is an amazing card for the price (around £115). So now I'm left with the problem of do I get the 750Ti now, or save a bit to get a 770 and a new PSU... choices choices.

I have a GTX 770, it runs ED as smooth as silk. That said, it's a fair bit more expensive than the 750Ti which is getting some good reviews. Choices choices.....

Indeed, and in several months, more likely next year the new iteration of 20whatdayacallit cards. I'm thinking of future proofing.. so a 750 Ti now, and wait till the new cards appear or.... Arraggghhh. My brain will implode soon methinks.

I made an informed guess & got a GTX 760 as that seemed to be about as much as I was willing to pay (talked myself up from 650Ti), to be at a good point on the "absolute performance per model" curve on http://www.geforce.co.uk/hardware/desktop-gpus/geforce-gtx-760/performance (taken with pinch of salt) and close enough to the top, & it didn't have outrageous power or cooling needs. And 760 is the lowest model that will support GSync if I want to go with that.

Oh, and I then waited for an appropriate sale deal to get it at a decent price.
[I needed NVidia for Linux drivers, so AMD wasn't an option for me - YMMV].

No matter what you get, it will be available cheaper sometime later, at which time there'll also be something better available for the same price.

If you're that worried, wait for the beta (but I wouldn't expect to see huge price drops between now and then - who knows), you'll still have buyers remorse at some stage, but we can then report what we're all seeing on what hardware.

It's not so much the cost of the cards that makes me want to wait, rather the newer cards due out next year *should* be quite a bit different, in the same way the new 750's are different from the nearest comparable cards, like the 650 (which according to various reviews or write-ups is nearly double the performance vs the 650- add any pinches of salt here). I'm tempted to wait till next year to see the new cards, as if I get a 770 now, I'll not get anything new for sometime, no need to. However if I opt for the mid level 750 Ti, I'm keeping my options open.

Well... looks like I've just managed to explain the choices to myself.. :) Thanks for helping me.. :D

Thanks T.J., and thanks to all for the comments! Seems like I have about a year to decide, seeing as Beta comes out when Alpha finishes, and Gamma comes out when Beta finishes and Release comes out when Gamma finishes. ;)

This may be a dumb question, but: do I need a good graphics card if I intend to get an Oculus Rift? Does OR plug into a GFX port, like HDMI?
