The Great ELW Fishing Expedition

I guess I'm here for the participation trophy, but it's fun anyway... ;)

Another 10, though the hit rate dropped from 1 in 32 to 35 in the last ~500 systems in the boxel.

My ratio dropped to 1 in 37...

Still an outstanding hit rate! If I had to put a number on it, searching just D-mass systems, I'd say the overall galactic average is around 1 in 70 or so. The problem is when you spend more time avoiding previously visited systems in your chosen cube than you do actually searching and having to continually go back and forth to the galmap.

This can be alleviated somewhat by having a long jump ship.
Say, 70+ LY with full tanks.
Then just have the boxel name ready to be pasted and add the running number each time, incrementing by 1.
Sometimes the jump would be over single jump range, so eithe use synthesis, or check the system the plotter throws in between.
If the increment gives you a system you've already visited, go to the next one.

That's why I usually navigate the boxel not via GalMap, but use the Nav panel instead.
Previously visited:

Not visited:

Usually the next unvisited system is among the first two of the boxel in the list, but I also have cases where the first 7-10 are already visited, usually around the edges/corners of a boxel. It basically results in an efficient route with random direction. Benefit: I don't need to open/close the GalMap.
Of course, that means I do not filter for star types, including also G and K mains with lower ELW hit chance than A & F (and WDs and other rares with even lower or no chance depending where I am), and I always have to go to the Nav panel for every jump.
Another disadvantage is that upon arrival you can't already align with the next system - that's only possible if you follow a route plotted in the GalMap.

Doing it more systematically, I guess in a densly populated boxel one could try to make threads of efficient routes spaced about 10-20ly from the next thread.
What's obvioulsy missing is an option to combine filters, like star types and visited/unvisited systems. Could think of more, but I guess that's the most obvious one.

11 more, the hit rate improved to 1 in 33. When I get over 2000 of the 7000 systems scanned in this boxel (75 to go), I consider moving on.
First hit in a K main system in this boxel, also my first ELM relevant to the ELW hunt ( have one more on this trip), and my second system with 2 ELWs relevant for the ELW hunt.

My overall hit rate is in the toilet because of my 58K BP run and coming back...700 or so systems and only 3 found...lol

As for my hunting method...Initially I just eco troll through an area..if I hit 2 in a cube, I stop and sample 500 or so..if that 500 has good results..then I eco jump numerically from 0 upwards...which is blazing fast to start, with strings of jumps sometimes as great as 40 or more ( I also filter out all but A and F systems) Man I miss the "Import stars" function...

Hey Chiggy, once you've found a likely cube to strip mine, how do you plot the A & F systems that you want to visit ?

Do you increment system name in the Galmap, use bookmarks, just use the Nav pane, or is there some other secret sauce that makes your system so <struggles with jealousy> blasted effective? :)

Incremental in Gal-map, starting with -0 of that cube, skipping over G and K systems and systems that were previously scanned. As i'm jumping through my route, if the next system has already been checked (or is an E mass A system) I go back into galmap and skip over it (and any subsequent visited systems ) until I get to an non-visited one along the route...after about the first quarter or so, there are enough visited systems along the route to where it's quicker just to go straight to the next sequential system directly, and at that point, I usually really start cherry picking, avoiding anything other than A8, A9 and F0-F4

I would appreciate your comments on my current routine:
  • using EDJP, I select d-rated boxel and go from the lowest number upward (EOCH BLI MJ-F d12-1 -> EOCH BLI MJ-F d12-2 -> EOCH BLI MJ-F d12-3 etc..). EDJP will always put the next system in my clipboard, so no searching, just open GM and paste it in the search box...
  • filtering only F and A stars, I plot a route in eco mode between them, I usually get around 10-20 jumps of 3-4 ly
  • by traveling like this, I very seldom visit systems I have visited before, but the more the boxel is explored, the higher chance of hitting previously visited systems
  • I honk the system and if there is any ELW or WW I FSS them and/or DSS them
  • rinse and repeat...
Is this what you guys do as well?

I lost my OCD to FSS bodies in systems where there is no ELW or WW two weeks ago... Before that, I would FSS everything.

For the most part, that's how I do it, I just enter the next system manually into the Galmap (copy and pasting the sector name and cube identifier lettering) I try to never revisit a system or an E mass system (extremely low chance of an ELW there). So I will bypass those on my route if I'm paying attention and not already jumping by the time I notice...lol
