And should have mentioned,
If you are out exploring, thousands of LY from civilisation, and you decide to do a little bit of mining.......How do the NPC miners turn up so fast?
I tried a bit of mining before I stripped out the gear to improve my jump range, and before I had left the system a group of NPC miners turned up and started work. How did they get there so fast when it takes me over half an hour to get there?
.
[Yes, I do know they spawn, but in the game world they must have been tracking me with FSW scanners - just in case they could watch to see if I did a bit of mining that they could take part in]

STICKY

Glad you found it useful! The .exe is an executable that you run in the background alongside ED, that in combination with the key bindings I suggest automates power management somewhat. It's generated using an automation tool called Autohotkey; I've included the generation script in the same folder in case you don't want to download an unknown .exe from the internet, or would prefer to generate it yourself (or modify how it works).

Great guide! I've recommended it to newcomers a few times.

Please correct this part, now you take damage to modules already at 100% heat, not 120%. So I would not advise to scoop at 95% heat.

- When your heat level gets to about 95%, drop your throttle to zero so that you're cruising at 30 Km/s.
- At this point you'll be scooping *some* fuel and your heat should be staying at a safe level. You'll only start taking damage if your heat goes over 120% or so.

Technophebe, you bring pride to your family when you make a work of art like this, you have my thanks, and my respect.

Thanks for that faluc, I've fixed the relevant section. I started playing again recently but have been inactive for a few months, must scour the rest of it for references to things that have changed in the meantime!

As someone who just got in the cockpit this weekend this guide has been an immense help. The constructive comments also inspires faith in the community.
Thank you and clear skies.

Great Post
have some rep!

Should definitely be stickied!

In your Controls section it might be good to mention unbinding the Jettison All Cargo key! I've seen many angry\funny posts regarding this.

Another area to to have a guide on would be on Fines and Bounties. I've been attempting to educate people as they ask in the forum about this and I created a small guide which I think would look great here :D

Part of the confusion on bounties is the process itself, the other, is the way they are talked about.

The way people talk about bounties is confusing for some people as they use words like "cleared" and "removed". There is an implication that it is gone for good and you no longer have to worry about it - which is wrong. Yes you are no longer Wanted, but depending on what happened to you to clear it (ugh, I just did it!) I mean become unWanted, it could come back. No matter what there is always the money cost - that never goes away until you pay it off.

I did a load of digging when I first got a bounty, this is the information I have pieced together. This thread and this post were particularly useful in working it all out. I've posted the information below in response to other bounty question posts and through them have been able to slowly piece together the finer points.

You can not pay off a Bounty, you can only pay off Fines.

If you're Wanted then someone has put an Active Bounty on your head.

An Active Bounty has a timer that can last anywhere from 5 minutes to a maximum of 7 days depending on the size of your bounty. Examples...
  1. Friendly fire is about 100-200Cr and will last 5-10 Minutes.
  2. Killing an innocent pilot is 6000Cr and will last for 7 days.

When the bounty timer expires it says "ON H-JUMP" not "0hr 0min 0sec". You have to make a hyperspace jump before your legal status is recomputed.

Fines...
  1. You can pay them off
  2. You have 7 days before a Fine becomes an Active Bounty and you become Wanted.

If you have an Active Bounty a number of things could happen...
  1. You commit more crimes in the bounty issuers jurisdiction. The Active Bounty increases and the timer is reset. You are still Wanted.
  2. You get killed but the bounty is not claimed. The Active Bounty becomes a Dormant Bounty. You are no longer Wanted.
  3. You get killed and someone claims the bounty. The Active Bounty becomes a Legacy Fine of equal value. You are no longer Wanted.
  4. You survive the length of the bounty timer. The Active Bounty becomes a Legacy Fine of equal value. You are no longer Wanted.

If number 2 happened to you, you now have a Dormant Bounty on your head, this lasts for another 7 days * and yet more things could happen...
  1. You are detected committing a crime in the bounty issuers jurisdiction. The Dormant Bounty becomes an Active Bounty again, the timer is reset. You become Wanted.
  2. You get scanned by an Authority Vessel in the bounty issuers jurisdiction. The Dormant Bounty becomes an Active Bounty again, the timer is reset. You become Wanted.
  3. You manage to not re-activate your Dormant Bounty for 7 days. The Dormant Bounty becomes a Legacy Fine of equal value.

Legacy Fines...
  1. You can finally wipe the slate clean and pay off the fine.
  2. They can never become an Active or Dormant Bounty ever again.
  3. You do not have to pay them off.
  4. They never go away unless you pay them off.
  5. If you're killed and then restart in the bounty issuers jurisdiction you will be forced to pay off any outstanding Legacy Fines during the re-purchase of your ship.

* I would like to get confirmation on the the length of the Dormant Bounty timer - As in if the Active Bounty was for only 3 days is the Dormant Bounty timer the same, or is it always 7 days?
