The highs and lows of exploring

So after two weeks out in the black I got to the Statue of Liberty nebula.
Almost every system on the way there was undiscovered :)
I detailed scanned all the interesting stuff.
last night found my first earth like undiscovered too, just a few stops from the nebula.
so pleased, time to have a celebratory pit stop.
while sc was charging popped the oven on, back and away we go, ok time to put the pizza in sc charging nip out pizza in come back and temp at 388% I was just in fuel scoop range! After three weeks of fastest travel I had swopped to economical this meant my fuel scoop completed in a sec and I did not realise I was still in scoop range coz I'm an idiot. Canopy compromised eject. Pop.
then reprieve couldn't connect to server to restart rebuy! I'm alive! I log on yes alive I tells ya!
log on today I'm dead :(
one stupid mistake and pow right in the kisser. Ah well didnt fancy the flight home any way.
might pop back for that earth like though...

Q: What's the difference between you and a baked potato?
A: Tens of thousands of light years.

Sympathies, CMDR. I log out if I have to AFK for more than a few seconds, and when I do I have radio earphones on so I can hear anything going wrong....

Ouch! As a practice, I tend to only afk while facing away from a sun and if I afk during FSD, I never do it for more than a few seconds. Well, lesson learned I suppose, right? May your new journey bring you better discoveries!

That sucks to hear. Personally, if I have to AFK for a minute or two, I press the X key while the countdown to a FSD Jump is occurring; When you enter the new system you'll pop out travelling at 30km/s.

Anything longer than that and I log out or go to normal space and kill the engines. The risk of a couple weeks exploration lost is personally too high.

Hey thanks all.
Such a stupid thing to do. I was enjoying it..
I may have a little rest at a RES with my vulture and then I might pop back out.
My plan was to get to Eta Carina and pop back and then trade for a bit with a nice big trader.
Hey ho I suppose Ill have to have that fun again. :) (rep added to those it lets me)

I never AFK during a FSD charge but I discovered the hard way that warning noises aren't audible while in selfie mode, and that I had a key bound to silent running that was way too close to the selfie mode key. Nice pic, yay, happy, back to my cockpit that looked more like a Rammstein live performance than a spaceship cockpit and BOOM. Then connexion error, came back alive I thought "yay the disaster never got registered to my save, phew that was close" but on the next login I saw the insurance claim interface.

Back in the bubble I traded to get back the insurance money, then… back to exploration! Currently halfway to the core thanks to an unbound silent running key.

BTW, this is what a severely overheating Asp looks life from the outside. Yep, it looks perfectly fine:

Sorry about your loss CMDR. Really sucks to die like that BUT you learned your lesson now...scooping while away is not a smart move, and you need to really know what you are doing when so.

If it helps, for what's worth, this is what I do and what i have in my Asp: a 3A fuel scoop (max 176g/s) and a 5A power plant. I normally turn off every module except for: Thrusters, Life Support, FSD Drive, Power Plant (cant anyways), Scanners and Fuel Scoop. Everything else I turn off.

Why is that important? Because of the huge power plant, the output to keep only those vital modules on, is very low, which translates in lower heat, which makes it possible for me to get into the "Max Scoop area of 176g/s" and stay there forever (over an hour) without reaching anything beyond 65%.

Now, I scoop head on towards the star, not on my side or on my belly. Head on, all I see is the furious star flaming away some 2 ls in front of me.

I have been out for a smoke, have dinner, check the news, wash the dishes and come back to the same 65% heat. So I know it works. But I won't recommend it to anyone who's not experienced enough. And I would certainly never, EVER, log out in that position or consequence when I come back will be harsh!!

SO, equip yourself with a large scoop and a large power plant before heading out again thus you wont need to get too close to the star and you will refuel fast! Faster than a pizza cooks in the oven!

I always park under a star to refuel when in the void and skim the star in habitted space. Mind I have been out in the void more than in human space :D

Thanks to the "turn off stuff you don't need" my "cold" temp is 21%. I've got a 6C scoop so don't need to hang around too long either :)

One tip is when charging drop your speed. Then when its ready to hyper jump you can go to max throttle, and immediately throttle back. 99.9% of the time that means you can hang around outside the star for ever...

I go AFk a lot. Have to with 4 kids and a dog that dumps for England (and seems to think I'm the only one that knows how to open the door to let it out) but I always turn away from a star and move away a bit before leaving. Would hate for anything like this to happen. I feel your pain however, just take it as lesson learned and don't get disheartened by it. Good luck
