The inevitable OR disaster

EDIT: All good now (it SEEMS). I replaced the motherboard and case, and came up with an ingenious way of cleaning the GPU. So far so good, haven't had any glitches and have even been playing ED for 20 minutes without issue.

PRAY it lasts!

I will be making a video on how I cleaned the GPU too, you'll want to memorise the method.

It finally happened. Always knew it would one day, even before I got the anti-vision rift. I had finally lapsed and left a can of coke on my case (which happens to have a fan - READ HOLE - on the top) and while blindly reaching for my headphones, I knocked it over.

Heard the sound of water dripping, heart sank, oculus rift screen went blank, hit the power switch and turned off the PSU. Dried, cried, and tried and alas, seems like I have a £750 replacement cost before I can make the final kylie of my return trip from the core.

If anyone watches my videos and takes any of my firsts, I will make a video about them and their jerkitude!

At least power play should be out by the time I'm back :D

Starting with mobo replacement. Wish me luck that the GPU survives or no more deep space surveys for a long time lol

Although I have footage for one more, if I can get the onboard working.

BE CAREFUL

Thanks guys, really appreciate it. The GPU did get wet and has been showing signs of failure so it's highly likely it's gone. 2 days till mobo arrives, so can give it a chance to dry and reboot.

Does anyone know if water damage is covered by palit/Nvidia warranty? Kinda hard to Google these things on my phone lol

Oh man that stinks. I knocked a Coors light over all over my desk but luckily it did not get to the edge and into my case which has lots of openings for heat dissapation. Feel bad for this happening hope you get it back up soon.

At least I got a lot more time for forum trolling

NNNNnnnooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!! every gamers worst nightmare realized..tragic. heh, I was about to see if you were on and how far you made it. if i try real hard I MIGHT make it back before you.

Coke is brutal stuff on a pcb. Between the corn syrup and the acid it will really do a number on anything. I've tried to save several electronic devices that have had run-ins with Coke, none of them were successful :(

I feel for you man.

Ouch man, I feel bad for you. I knew this would eventually happen to me, so when I put on the rift I make sure there's nothing I can knock off nearby. Damn VR man, lol.

I had an ashtray incident tonight that required breaking out the shop vac to resolve. Between that and this thread, I've been inspired to clean up the spare room and get the Playseat Evolution out of the garage. I think it's time to make a safe spill-free area for Elite.

That sucks! I knocked over a glass of water while grapping my headphones myself allready. My computer is pretty far away though so all that got soaked were my trousers. ;)
I hope your GPU is ok at least.

Ah damn and there was me thinking tomorrow was Tuesday.

The lesson being:

Don't drink and drive!

balls!. That sucks. I have had a few near misses and a few spills but thankfully the only device i have killed (touches wood) is a keyboard.

I keep my pc away from my desk, however on a number of occasions i have tripped over my rift or headset wire and pulled them off my desk.
so far I have caught the rift each time, and my headset has taken the hits and still working, however it is only a matter of time............................

good luck and hope the amount of damage is less than you fear.

Ouch, Coke? It's absolute hell on wheels for electronics- syrupy, acidic and generally troublesome. It's not much better for your insides, either. In all the DJ horror stories of destroyed mixers, the destructive power of a pint of beer is dwarfed by Coke. "Lo, I am become death, destroyer of worlds" and all that. Obviously, too much of any liquid isn't ideal for computers, but Coke really is about the most dangerous (out of the things you're likely to drink, at least). Do your electronics, your teeth and your insulin response a favour and drink something else :)

Sometimes washing stuff in deionised water, and then drying it in the airing cupboard (if you have one) packed in uncooked rice or sachets of silica gel will bring it back. However, with Coke, it's a massively long shot. That stuff's like Kryptonite, yo.

Really sorry for your trashed equipment, that sucks a lot. Sadly, your chances of claiming on you warranty are more or less precisely nil. Palit in particular are pretty shady about warranties- they usually won't even honour them if you've changed the fan. You could check if your home contents insurance covers you, maybe? I'm sure you've been paying them your hard-earned cash for years, it's about time you got something back.

Fingers crossed for you, sorry to hear about the disaster!

People deliberately stand liquids in open containers over the top of expensive non waterproof electronic items and then cover their eyes up????

Lol I take it you don't have ADHD then. Tbh, after owning this one machine for 6 years I'm surprised it hasn't happened more often.

Thanks for the well wishes. You will be happy to know it was diet coke, so my insulin response isn't at jeopardy, although perhaps my teeth are.

And yes, my biggest sadness in all this is that tomorrow is tuesday. At least I now have an excuse for holding on to my data to sell to a power after power play.

On the bright side I've found a way to replace everything. Its a shame, that money could go towards a bloody down payment on a house. I might even be back in a week or two, so I'm enjoying this thing called real life, you should try it, while I wait

Weirdly, artificial sweeteners are somewhat dubious, too:

Somewhat counter-intuitive.. but yeah, the phosphoric acid and things are probably a menace to your teeth, too. Still, enough of anything will probably kill a computer- an entire cup of tea made my previous G15 die with no messing. So far, I have got away lightly- I once spilled a large cup of black coffee in a DEC cluster server.. but DEC built things to last, so tipping it over so the coffee ran out and mopping up the desk seemed to be enough. The machine had coffee breath for ages, but kept running. Ahem. *looks around shiftily*

I'm familiar with it, it messes up my CR/hr. Without it, I'd probably have a fleet of Anacondas in every single colour by now! Anyway, here's hoping that the new build is even better than the old one, and that you're up and running quickly.
