Definitely worth using a stick. I used Logitech Extreme 3D Pro and it worked nicely. Upgraded to X52 Pro and happy with that too. Was very tempted to go Warthog :D

Any Joystick with Throttle and Roll Axis and at least one Coolie Hat and a couple of Buttons will do the trick for Elite Dangerous.
Logitech Extreme 3D Pro or Thrustmaster T.Flight Stick X USB or Thrustmaster T.16000M or the Thrustmaster T.Flight Hotas Stick X
should work well with this Game. X52 is the best for it IMHO, because of the Spacey look, that obviously stands model for the Cmdr's Hotas in the Game.
X52 and a TrackIR5 and you are almost in total control. Only for the Galaxy and System Map im still using a mouse. Those simply aren't made for a Joystick. :(

I use a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro.

It sports a total of 6 buttons on the stick it self, a top hat switch, 6 buttons on the quite sturdy base, a useless throttle (bad placement), but also has rudder control through sideways twist. Its software provides with ample configuration options though, such as the possibility to bind macros, set deadzones, sensitivity and absolute range. (In game settings for dead zones seems to lower sensitivity. Setting them in the stick's software is preferable.)

Mine is several years old. They age well. As all such hardware, they get a bit fuzzy in the center with time, but that's what deadzone settings are for. Paired with enhanced sensitivity, it gives exactly the amount of precision you set it for, even when older.

Oh, and price... I can't tell you what you will have to pay for it, but here in Norway, they cost between €55-65, roughly.

Software have a few minor problems though. The easiest way to make it work, is to set the profile you build to being always present. I guess you could lock it to detect the launcher instead of the game, which probably would have it start up before the game itself does. Setting it to load at game launch, certainly doesn't activate the profile quickly enough on my PC. IF you use deadzone or sensitivity settings from its software; You will want to do a quick left-right, up-down, twist-left/right maximum routine as soon as you have entered the game, so that game and stick software use the same numbers for max and min. Or you may experience some drifting, at least on an old stick.

It is a quirky joystick. Not the highest quality you can get. But learn to configure it and learn how to use it properly and it is quite precise, as well as comfortable. There is perhaps more resistance to it than usual. Back when I chose to buy this one, there was a lull in flight-sims. As a result, there were few sticks to choose from. I had just broken a cheap Microsoft stick and I was not impressed with its quality. Within my price range I could then choose between a Saitek and this one. I chose this one because it was frequently commented as more durable, while all its competitors around that price level at the time were getting complaints on their lack of longevity.

I have not been disappointed.

Too many comments to reply to so I will reply to you all at once,

Thanks allot for all the recommedations and answers!
its helps me allot and I appreciate it!

Since you guys say its well worth it to buy a joystick to play ED I am very happy to hear that since I would like to use a joystick, normally I prefer keyboard and mouse for pc-gaming, I use a controller for race games/GTA games cause its better that way imo :p I used to play loads of simulations with keyboard and mouse too! its not bad at all, I mean you can keybind every single key as you wish, but it gets anoying when you try to well... fly a fighter jet or a space ship... I tried using a controller but I dont really enjoyed playing with a controller, so I thought maybe a stick! that would make sence right?

I dont have a lot of money to spare and my Xmas funding is well... gone xD I might be able to get a X-55 Rhino which to me looked pretty fing cool and good for those who just start out cause its not a piece of **** :p

I'll have to see how much I can spend and then I will get a stick that is similair to you guys recommedations and tips!

I have looked into most of your sticks and I am really pelased with the x52 and the x55 rhino, which do you guys reccomend me? I might be able to get them both so the price doesnt matter.

I thank you very much for commenting on this post and I appreciate all the information you guys gave me!

see you commanders in space o7

I used the xboxone gamepad for all of beta. I could have stayed with that pad and been quite happy in the game, it's fully functional and well-supported, and landing & menu navigation is top notch; however I did get an x-55 Rhino and it's really just a completely new game for me. Feels more advanced, I can pull off slicker moves in combat. Just soooo much better for dogfighting ... and really the xbox gamepad was quite good already.

I picked up an x52 original off ebay for about $90 us/cad shipped.
Love it. Love the layout. Love all the hat switches. Love that it's almost visually identical to the in-game controls. When combined with voiceattack($8) it has way more buttons then i need.

All that aside, I've had to smack it around with the multimeter and soldering iron on 3 separate occasions. 3 full failures stemming from 3 separate issues. Either I got a super lemon, or Saiteks quality control / build quality is complete rubbish. IMO they (the originals at least) are just poorly designed and built.
I would probably still buy another saitek product but i wouldn't buy used or expect it to last me more then a year or two without some serious DIY work.

Saitek and the x52 are known for being subpar and need mods and repairs.

joystick troubles

hiya, not sure if ive posted this in the right place, sorry if i haven't as iam new to all this. ive got a mad catz cyborg v1 joystick, plug it in and it works but say i go to pull up on the stick i get nothing noting nothing then flat out everything. cant make slight adjustments. just all or nothing and clue as to why?

Anyone else think the joystick is a little bit too sensitive at small movements?

Hi,

Been dogfightning lately and I think there is too much sensitivity of the joystick when moving it small amounts ie. holding a ship in the crosshair at 1km away. It is very easy to over compensate on the stick and loose target.

Setting deadzone to higher is no good, only prevents movement.

What I would like is to lower the sensitivity of the stick when moving it small amounts.

I already asked in here for the ability to set up response profiles, like combat flight sims use, and nobody responded.

Yes, it is far too sensitive around the centre of the stick for small movements.
