Waves to another T.16000M user.
There used to be a guy who actually did a left-handed conversion for the CH Pro Throttle.
Sadly he is no longer doing it.

Here is the link to his defunct post:

Congratulations!

Personally I think the buttons on the base of the T.16000M are not so great.
I haven't really used its throttle either.

Wow, that's some nice work, it's really difficult getting a HOTAS working comfortably for a lefty. The throttle at least

PS People who need extra buttons can look into Voice Attack as mentioned or PowerGrid (if you have a spare tablet around, I use my 5" smartphone)

keyboard and joystick with occassional mouse.
really going to invest in an auto-docker component though... docking always suckd in elite

I'm a lefty and I use the T16000M and have it set up for left handed. The throttle works well enough for elite. Good thing using it left handed because I can then use the mouse to look around. :)

Thanks again for the opinions, so far (space problem mainly) i found 2 sticks in this thread that would work and are interesting to me:

extreme 3d pro joystick
Saitek Cyborg V1

If you look at both, which one would you choose ?

I use the Extreme 3D Pro and it's a joy to play. I can turn on a dime, have zero docking issues, the throttle is smooth, and the 12 buttons are laid out in an easy to use manner. You can also yaw with it, which makes adjustments that much easier. For under $30 I'd recommend this one all day.

Personally I don't know how people can play with a joystick. First thing when I fired up Elite was going for my X360 controller but I barely survived my first encounter with hostile NPC so threw that away... With a joystick I couldn't aim at a planet much less do any damage to anything in the vicinity unless by accidentally crashing into it. Mouse+keyboard was the obvious choice flawless first ever attempt at docking, never had any problems outmaneuvering ships in combat. How you can play games on controllers is beyond me.
Only thing that sucks while playing with mouse is you can't look around and fly and the same time, unlocking free camera means your ship flies straight can't reduce throttle turn it nothing..

Started on KB only - I bought the original Elite in 1984 so the "classic" control set was what I'm used to. Have been using a joystick recently, though, and although combat feels less precise, my landings look uber sexy now.

The Logitech Extreme 3d is the best entry-level budget joystick you'll find. If you're unsure about joysticks, pick that one up and you'll soon be hooked.

If a HOTAS is what you're after, you can't go wrong with the Saitek X52 for $150 , or the Thrustmaster T-flight for $75 if you're on a very tight budget.

I tried playing this with mouse and keyboard for kicks, and in my opinion it's a lot better than a basic xbox controller, but I'm not a fan of consoles or gamepads in general. That being said, a proper HOTAS is 1000x better for any flight or space sim. I've been impressed with Elite: Dangerous' controller support and the way it plays with a joystick, which is a lot more than I can say for the latest version of Star Citizen..

I wonder is it complicated to play the game by mouse ? I rather would like mouse but if its difficult maybe joystick would be better?

I've been playing for several hours now and I can say that m/k is not terrible, you need a little time to be accostumed but then you can do a lot of magic tricks without big problems. Obviously I think the Joystick would be a lot better, and I'll buy one if I keep enjoying the game. I have an xbox controller, you don't need it.

Joystick, as ED is effectively a fight sim, albeit one set in space.
It's nothing like a flight sim. The forces on your craft are based on thrust alone. There's no "lift" gained from forward motion, the craft doesn't stall. Even gravity doesn't work - you just slow down when you're near a massive body. You can't (for example) slingshot around a star. Newcomers might be overcome by its complexity, but it's nowhere near as complicated as a flight sim.

I'm going to be getting a HOTAS setup in the next month or so myself and have narrowed it down to either a Thrustmaster T16000m / CH Pro Throttle or Thrustmaster HOTAS Warthog / CH Rudder Pedal. I ruled out anything by Saitek as I have owned Saitek gear before and the build quality/durability/customer service is awful - not a big deal when you've paid £15 for a joystick but when your spending around £150 it's a deal breaker.

What I would really like to know is that as I will be learning how to play the game basically from fresh whichever setup I pick (using keyboard/360 pad currently), what are peoples opinions on the difference between rudder pedals and twist grip and which would be easier to get to grips with so to speak.

All quite true, but it's far more like a flight sim than a game where you run around with a gun.

Though you're basically only manipulating thrust and the direction of it, you also have to steer the ship. A true HOTAS throttle will absolutely give you more control over this than pressing + + + + + - - - (or whatever) as you're flying, and certainly more than just having keys mapped to 0/25/50/75/100 thrust values.

That doesn't even get into steering the ship and fine-tuning an attack vector - and on those points, a joystick controller is better than a mouse or a gamepad any day of the year.

Not used the CH stick so can't comment. I'm using the "flashy" non-pro x52 and haven't found a single thing to complain about - very happy with it and no regrets about not getting something more expensive.
