Personally I use an xbox controller with a lot of the controls changed, pitch and yaw on the left to make combat/targeting easier, vertical thrusters and roll on the right for better maneuvering, I just find it easier than a keyboard and mouse for controlling in combat since most of the necessary controls can be used simultaneously with more precision, docking with over-ride so horizontal and forward thrust are on the right analogue is easy as a bacon butty so I can dock pretty quickly. With a joystick though, I haven't a clue, especially because I can't imagine general use or combat without a yaw control and a roll control without things getting cumbersome.

£32.97 on Amazon (although they are out of stock at the moment - not surprising really!)
I was watching them on Amazon but couldn't buy right before Christmas because I was tapped out on fun money. On December 15th, they could be had for $35 - a steal. By the afternoon of the 16th they were up to $45. I bought mine from newegg.com on the 18th for $50. Now, you can't find them anywhere. LOL

I guess ED has been good for the joystick business if nothing else. ;)

I've had the T-Flight HOTAS, and am currently using a Warthog, and there is absolutely no doubt at all that the Warthog is by far superior.

It is also about 10x the price of the T-Flight. You get what you're paying for, but you certainly do pay for it......

If you're on a budget, or just aren't prepared to spend $120+ (not including pedals, btw) or so for something better, such as the X52 (if you can find one), or the X55 (reports of dodgy quality), or some of the CH kit (evidently very good), then the T-Flight is really worth looking at. It's great value for what you get, and if you're not into "serious" simming, such as DCS & BMS, then it'll serve you very well.

And for a whole hell of a lot less than what you'll pay for the next tier of HOTAS.

I looked a little at that site but only found one review the x55 rhino. so you are saying that's a good one ?

For me it would be the Warthog but that's a personal preference.
I own a Thrustmaster HOTAS Cougar but the age and the poor quality of the parts inside made me look for a new controller.
For ED only I think Warthog is to pricey and the X-52 should be more then enough. I for one so got used to the ergonomic button layout,
I'd pay the price for it. That and other decent combat/civil flight sims.

I use a Thustmaster HOTAS X, it has a yaw axis by twisting the stick. Oh and you have just enough buttons and axes to be able to play without touching the keyboard at any point (except for chat or galaxy map searches, obviously), which is really enjoyable.

Yes I agree. I use the Thrustmaster HOTAS with Yaw and I really don't have to touch the keyboard unless I want to move to one of the other screens in fact I dont even use all of the buttons and need to improve on this.

Xbox wireless controller. Works great. Very low throw distance (compared to most of the HOTAS sticks) means good maneuverability speed. I find it quite precise and for anything not mapped to the controller, the keyboard is not far away.

stay frosty.

Joystick (H.O.T.A.S.) Yaw and Roll

My Saitek X55 is finally here! (The elite release seems to have soaked up the entire supply of Saitek HOTAS!)

I've sort of got use to mouse pitch/roll - mainly as I found keyboard roll and mouse pitch/yaw made docking harder. However my natural inclination was to want to yaw with the mouse for fine control in combat.

The joystick is setup by default to be similar, with the Z-Axis doing yaw. However I'm still finding this counter-intuitive.

Does anyone set X axis as yaw and Z as roll (this would be in line with games I've played in the past - the difference being that ED roll is needed for fast movement)

From all HOTAS and Joysticks I have seen so far, they all seemed to be low quality crap. No matter the price.
Except one: The Warthog from TM.

It is heavy and does not move around, touching it is a pleasure, it is very exact and you really get what you pay for.
All the others are cheap plastic crap.

I m ight be wrong, maybe there is another high quality stick out there ?

The lack of yaw by turning the stick is not a disadvantage. You have an analog and plenty of digital knobs on it. I use a digital on throttle side. It's gives nice control.

Currently I've got a Logitech Extreme, but I've been looking to upgrade to an X65F. If anyone can tip me in on places to get one at a good price I'd certainly appreciate it.

I have the X55's as well. I have never heard of replacing the pitch axis with the has axis... I don't think it would be a good idea especially since yaw isn't frequently used. I really only use yaw when I am side swiping my opponent using lateral thrusters or when I am docking. I know how you feel however, the twist action on the X55 is pretty bad.

I've just tried setting it like this - roll on Z, yaw on X - It's much more a natural expression of what you arm/hand and the craft is doing.

Now to work out what the other 99 buttons do and what they _should_ do!

I read a billion recommendations to put roll on X but I've played so many flight games and have so many old habits that it just felt really weird. I remapped it to Z and I've done so much better that way.

I think we're probably weird, but I think that's okay!

It depends on what kind of flight games you have played in the past. In games like X-wing it was roll on Z and yaw on X, in wing commander the controls were like this. In Flight simulators you had a rudder control separate.

I am currently running dual T16000m sticks. It takes some getting used too. I want to get some pedals before I decide if I like the setup. One thing I already and concerned with is that having two sticks means hands on all the time. Keyboard commands will be hard to do and may need voice attack as a requirment for my set up. I might revert to stick and throttle with an orbweaver or something. At least I can take my hand off the throttle and have it maintain speed. Currently I have forward and back thrust mapped to the twist access on my left stick. Hands off that and I am dead in the water... er... space.

I'd like to tell you all that I picked up the game yesterday, and I am extremely impressed by the quality and keyboard+mouse support. Also planning to get the joystick we've been talking about here (Thrustmaster Hotas X), but I need to hold on for now since all the shops I buy from around here seems to not have them in stock ;P
