Protip: Get a joystick

If you're a noob like me. Get one. I got a joystick today. Game changer. Easier to play and more immersive. Just sayin'. Do it.

I'm a poor commander. I have the extreme 3d pro. Still improves gameplay experience though! My 2 year old son would probably wipe a booger on one of those +$100 flight rigs. He's into that right now. Then I would get mad at him. Then my wife would get mad at me for getting mad at my son over a "dumb game". Then I don't get play for a couple days.

I have to concur, finding it a lot more fun with my X55 compared to my Logitech game pad.

Game pad is good enough for controls and definitely recommend as essential over keyboard and mouse but joystick just adds a bit more fun and gives you the feeling of flying.

I was just today assured by a friend who preordered today that mouse and keyboard will be absolutely superior... all I could say was "Okie doke.". lol He's been in War Thunder too long methinks.

I have a Saitek X52 pro and trust me when I say that it is superior to m&m. By a long shot :)

I have a hotas for flight sims and a gamepad but I been using mouse n keybord in competitive online games since the days of quake and I've tested them all in elite and found that using a mouse n keybord with my setup is great, no need for gimbled weapons since I can pretty much hold a solid lock on a ship till it pops and I'm not tryin to sound pro but evading interdictions is ridiculously easy. 1 interdiction since it was introduced

I recently purchased a thrustmaster HOTAS X, searched for a pre-built profile here on the forums and couldn't be happier. Add in VoiceAttack and there is no lack of inputs. Trying a delanclip with open track next.

Got the thrustmaster from amazon $40.... $8 voice attack. I feel like im flying an actual ship. It's incredible.

Now... I'm wating on a gtx970 and the OR...... Probably going to have to hire a person to feed me and change my man diapers because I won't want to get out of the chair.... ever.... in life.

What other options are out there compared to x52 - Merge Threads

I've literally had it with this stupid joystick and its moronic software. Things work for one day, only to find them not working the next. I can't disable the stupid second trigger which is a cause for so many fines, the pinkie button works today and not tomorrow, last night the whole joystick just stopped working while I was in combat and had to restart the game, lights and panels start flickering, other buttons work whenever there's a blue moon outside.

So basically, I'm looking for a hotas with tons of buttons on it, and no, the warthog is not an option.

I've got a mix.
I've got the very cheap and very good Thrustmaster T1600M. It does have a ton of buttons, but some of them are in weird spots, but in general I really like it (especially for the price).
For a throttle I bought the CH-throttle. It doesn't look fancy at all (at all), but that shouldn't matter. It's really function and nice :)
Especially love the little joystick on the throttle that I use for strafing in ED.

There's a fair bit of discussion on this, maybe have a trawl through this one or search HOTAS:

CH Pro Throttle and a logitech extreme3d myself with some cheapy switch pedals. The CH is a bit pricey but it has a reputation of being tough and it is mostly hat switches which is what ED wants, plus a nice little joystick with 'lateral thrusters' pretty much written on it. No sliders, trim tabs, etc.
The Extreme 3D is pretty cheap, responds pretty well, gives two triggers, four buttons and a hat without moving the fingers and it has a rudder twist, unlike the whog or the CH sticks, and has lasted me years. You can't quite map absolutely every control between both but it's pretty close. I have to turn the lights on and off from the module panel...

I use:

Logitech extreme 3D pro joystick
Razer tartarus which acts as keyboard and throttle
.
Works really well and means my keyboard doesn't get much use except for typing text

Defender Cobra M5 on the way here.

Was a toss up between that and the T16000M but in the end I think I prefer the M5 button layout:

- Two stage trigger - perfect for fire groups
- Two hats so one for HUD nav and the other for thrust vectoring

Logitech Extreme 3D Pro does the job quite well. I'm considering getting a Thrustmaster T16000M since a separate throttle is impossible to find at a decent price.

I bit the bullet and got the CH Pro Throttle.
It was the right decision. Definitively preferable to a second stick. (Which I also do own)

I also do have this configuration (t.16000 or extreme 3d as stick) and it is really good. The small stick on the throttle makes it perfect for ED. The only wish I would have is for a bit more and better placed buttons on the sticks and a more ergonomically formed stick on the t.16000.
