Thanks a lot for the information guys. I think i'm going to start a bit low before I invest into the more immersive joysticks. Thrustmaster X and T-Flight look like excellent suggestions! The logitech Extreme 3d Pro looks good but I think I want a side throttle. I'll see what I can get locally before buying online.

A Joystick is best over mouse.

I will offer another point of view and believe there is absolutely no need for a HOTAS in this game. I am not against hotas, especialy the more advanced ones with, multiple hats, including analogue and digital switches. But they are in another price range, for me to even consider.

I've got ALL keys set up on the Logitech Force Pro 3d. (discontinued) but it's really identical to the Logitech Extreme Pro both using the software profiler that comes with the joystick. I have 4 keys spare. Some keys I do not want on the joystick , ie. Jettison All/ Cargo scoop/radar range, barely used functions.
hope this helps you.

You still need two hands. :D As one hand sits on the joystick base buttons.

One button can be configured to act as a dedicated shift key button, to double the number of buttons you have, from 12-1 =11 buttons so 11 buttons x 2 = 22 Buttons! ie.
It even can shift the 'single' Hat switch, to use a different hat switch profile, 2nd virtual Hat switch.
Added to the fact the game configures the ,certain context sensitive functions , eg, when using a menu to choose items. That then gives you a virtual 3rd hat switch.

You save desktop space also. (somewhere to put your drink) . other advantage, is your hand are in a naturally more comfortable position resting on the base of the joystick. For extended hours playing this is a noticeable advantage. If you have to hold something in your left had, (your drink) and you do need to reduce throttle, It can be done with you joystick thumb whilst still holding the joystick control.

The smaller conveniently placed and designed throttle, offers the advantage in this game of that it is needed for quick movement, frequently. The hotas means your whole arm has to move, as opposed to your forefinger and thumb. Extended fighting this is noticeable.

(There is NO support for force feedback by the way)

Ive got a saitek cyborg evo that I'm happy with so does anyone know of any throttle then the ch throttle pro that works independently doe the x52 throttle work independently???

Just another recommendation to look into: C H Products combat stick (I think better for Elite than their Fighterstick due to better placement of fire 2) and Pro throttle. They might not have flashy lights all over them but they are built to last and consistently review well with the sim crowd.

The Logitech Extreme 3D Pro is fantastic for the money. It works like a champ for me and will work for my purposes until I can afford a nicer HOTAS setup.

Can't recommend this joystick highly enough. i'm at a slight disadvantage when it comes to HOTAS setups and the like (being a sinister leftie) but this joystick plays so well. i love the little throttle at the rear, as ambidextrous as I could find.

I've now adapted mine, with a dremel and some patience )

I'll put my name in as a third to recommend this joystick. At about $32 USD after shipping, it has a nice weighted feel to it, enough controls on it to map a number of important functions, but not too many such that you lose track. It was recommended to me by my coworker and I'm so happy I bought it. If you're looking for a budget joystick that isn't low on features, this is the one you want.

As a side note, the last joystick I owned had two buttons, two calibration wheels, and connected with a serial port.

How do I set control to my 360 joypad rather than mouse and keyboard?

When I go to the controls menu there's Keyboard/Mouse, Empty, and Classic Keyboard, but nothing for controller (even though I'm using it to navigate the menus.

I've been playing with Mouse and Keyboard since Premium Beta... and to be fair, I got fairly good at it... taking out quite a few commanders that are using joysticks ;)

But it's each to their own. In fact, I ordered my X52 today, which I should hopefully be getting in a couple of days :D Want to see what all the fuss is about :p

I use a wired X-Box 360 controller. I know that's not what you said in your post, but if you're struggling for options they're cheap and it works really well.

Loving the wired X360 controller, you can use a wireless one as well. A great cheap alternative, but really want to buy a HOTAS.

Yes, I always have it connected and lit-up. Strange.
I'll reboot and see what happens.

The controller needs to be plugged in before you launch Elite Dangerous. Then goto Options > Controller. Select Gamepad & Keyboard and then start mapping the controls to your 360 controller. That's all there is to it. Pinnacle is not needed. Please note that you will need to use the keyboard to carry out simple input functions. I have roll assigned to right stick. Yaw to left stick. Thrust up and down, left stick. Pitch up and down right stick. Controls are inverted as needed. Right trigger deploys hardpoints and fires primary weapons. Left trigger fires secondary weapon. X is the engine boost. A cycles weapon groups. Y targets the target ahead of you. Right bumper for acceleration. Left bumper for deceleration. I can't remember what I had for B as I use a different setup. On the keyboard I have acceleration points mapped to keys 7,8,9,0 for 25% acceleration, 50%, 75%, & 100% speed. X on the keyboard was assigned to bring throttle to 0%. Lights was assigned to numpad 0 Supercruise assigned to the K key, Jump assigned to the J key. Hardpoints deploy and retraction to U key. Delete jettison cargo. Home to open cargohold. L assigned to landing gear. V key to deploy heatsinks. I have W for UI up, A for UI left, S UI down, D UI right. Space is UI select. Q & E is set to goto next and prevous tabs on UI. Left Alt key assigned to head look and then I cna use mouse. Or I can press in on the right control stick and then use the right thumbstick to look around cockpit. Pressing right thumbstick again will reset the look to normal. I have the 1 key mapped to the navigational panel. 4 key mapped to the modules panel, 3 key mapped to sensors, 2 key mapped to chat. 5 key mapped to galaxy map, 6 key mapped to quick comm (same for Enter key). H key is mapped to hostile target. Hope this helps.

Also, is it an official xbox controller? The rock candy controllers and xbox 'compatible' controllers work, but may require additional configuration.

Logitech extreme 3d pro has worked well for me throughout beta and beyond with generic joystick bindings. can be purchased for reasonable money and not massive on your desk

I still have not decided on an exact control system *sighs* Life was so much simpler in 1984 when all I had was a rubber keyboard. :D

I have a HOTAS. I have Saitek Pedals. I have a Razer Nostromo. I have various GamePads (360, PS3, PS4, etc.). I have Head Tracking.

How many things can you plug in at once and have E: D recognise them?

Thanks for your config Kanevilorde.
It's plugged in and working as soon as the pc boots up. Checked drivers were up to date, rebooted, made sure it was working in other games, launched Elite, went to controls, and again...no Gamepad option.
It's an Afterglow 360 controller, but works just the same as an official one and uses the same drivers.

Now that they're correctly polling directx instanceGUID instead of productGUID, lots. Been up to 4 sticks simultaneously so far.

edit:

to be clear, that's all eight axes on two T-16000Ms, five axes on the 360 pad, 2 axes on the G13. So 15 simultaneous axes at the moment. Could also pull the hawg out of the box if we wanted to get really crazy.

x52 issues

Joy 6 on my X52 is not working in game, the driver control panel is recognizing it and showing it is working but in game it wont let use it, which means I have to reach to shift for the focus change. tried remapping but it is not recognized at all, this was working in the combat tutorial but now not in game =(, anyone with suggestions?
