i went back to mouse and keyboard, i want to be able to look around in the cockpit and that does not work well whit joystick (atleast not for me) unless you got track ir or a oculus kit.
whit a mouse look keybind and some basic keys on the keyboard for steering i can look around and still control my ship.

Now these are just my opinions.

Mouse and keyboard is most difficult, control pad is great, and joystick is fun, but not essential.

I started with mouse and keyboard at first, was ok it worked but desided to buy a cheap joystick and damn it made a world of difference in all aspect of the game, it alot easier to dogfight and land.

M/KB can work, I played the first two days while waiting for my logitech 3d to arrive, the most annoying part was basically that it's much harder to stop mouse steering and get your ship to stop turning than it is to do the same thing with the joystick.

I have zero combat experience, though, but I did all combat tutorials twice and it felt better with the stick

Managed to break my Warthog a couple of days ago - played with mouse, throttle and pedals for a while and it worked surprisingly well. However, I've been playing for months with a stick now, so I picked up a logitech 3d pro yesterday (replacement warthog is on its way, but will probably arrive after christmas).

I couldn't fathom flying anything without my joystick.

I couldn't fathom flying anything with a joystick. It feels so foreign to my old hands, which have been using M+KB and/or controller longer than some people here have been alive.

As to the OP, why would you ask such a subjective thing in a forum. Only you can answer that question. Only you can decide if something is comfortable, or if something is better than something else. You've already seen some people say it is better, and seen some people say it isn't better. So obviously it is not a yes/no question others can answer for you.

I bought a new joystick just for ED. After 5 min n the combat sim, I was back to KB&M. The only problem I have is excessive rolling. I have a very hard time landing on platforms because I roll around like a puppy in the mud. Lading in stations is easier for me.

If I ever manage to get a hande on the rolling thing, I'll be a happier camper.

I tried keyboard and mouse as my old joystick died, after 2 days of Gamma, i went a bought a new thrustmaster 1600m, i can honestly say my game experience has 1000% better with the joystick and I am very happy gamer, don't forget to unbind mouse to flight controls after binding joystick though else it gets very annoying, i use the mouse to look around now and for station menus

I also broke the gimbal ball instide my Warthog... ordered a new one from Thrustmaster. Looks like a need to custom make some aluminium parts for the inside of this stick. Can still use it thankfully.

I find flying full HOTAS with the Warthog (under the rift too) is perfect for this game. I use the "thumb" hat on right side of the flightstick to control menus and I can literally fly through through the screens/menus/etc of this game. Loving it. Docking is MUCH easier with a good joystick and throttle. Setup a hat on the throttle to control your thrusters and you rocking. Makes combat a blast too when you can sideways strafe oncoming ships.

Try both for a while.

Try both methods for a while and use what you find most comfortable. For me it will always be a joystick. I use the Saitek X52 Flight Controller. Elite Dangerous has a good default setting for it.

I'm contemplating a joystick (since that's how games used to be played) but currently doing fine with mouse and keyboard. I had to switch the mouse left/right to "turn" left / right instead of whatever the default binding is, though.
I imagine that a good flight stick comes into its own when dogfighting, but I don't do a lot of that.

Is my x52 Pro broken out of the box? I just received it, and everything works except the Boost button. I downloaded the newest drivers from Saitek, and in the calibration test everything works there. But, in game the "i" button for boost doesn't work with any binding.

I got the Boost to work by remapping it to another button, but the button originally mapped to that function doesn't work for anything assigned to it.

Hope some of the current x52 gurus can help/ have seen this.

Thanks

I( have a question for you CH Throttle owners if you dont mind?
I just bought a new one to accompany my CH stick.
So my flight stick has three coloured mode lights and a button on the stick you press to change modes, (I never used this but presume you can then rebind all the buttons for alternative tasks?
Anyway, my question is, the throttle also has three coloured mode lights, and in the list of buttons on the box it states, "Mode button", but I cannot for the life of me find a button that changes the mode, I have pressed every button I can find and the green mode light stays on.
Anybody know where it might be please?

Click the mini analog stick for the mode button. Its similar to an xbox click.

I looked around and decided to buy the Thrustmaster T-Flight Hotas X Joystick, which sell for around £ 40 on Amazon UK. http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B001CXYMFS/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i03?ie=UTF8&psc=1
The reviews are pretty good and considering the price on those other flight joysticks, I think this is going to be a fair compromise. Has anybody else got this thing and can comment on the feel of it?

I've used one of these for a while - it feels nice in my (large) hands - and for the price feels very well put together and very smooth in use, with dual yaw controls (one on the throttle, one on the stick).

It has just enough buttons for ED and when paired with Roccat's Power-Grid (for additional functions and iTunes control).

I would buy this again if my one broke.

Help for joystick setup, PLEASE

When I was still playing in the Beta, I was able to download a config file for my Logitech joystick and was happy as ever. But now, at the release, this config was wiped and I am struggeling with the setup. So my question:

How the hell do I tell the game, that when I put my little throttle lever to a certain position, that my ship flies with that amount of speed? Also when I put it all the way down, my ship should be at a hold and not go into reverse throttle.

Thanks in advance, this is driving me nuts!
