This is why I prefer my 360 controller. It's a much more comfortable input device than either mouse or HOTAS for me personally.

I can just let my arms relax and the sticks are very ergonomic. It really is the most comfortable way of gaming, especially if you have any type of joint problems.

Probably not a popular reply but a very good point indeed +1

I struggled with this too, not the stairs, the backache. I went through a few variations of options, I eventually made a lap mount for my x52. Its basically a glorified bit of 18mm ply with the hotas bolted to it shoulder width apart, as I sit on the sofa and play. I can post a pic if you're interested.

The x52 is definitely not designed ergonomically to be used at normal desk height, imho.

The issue is that the hotas is about 30mm too high to just set on a desk which you'd normally be fine typing or mousing at, so as others have said, you need to lower the desk, or otherwise find a way to lower the stick and throttle to at least where the top of the body of the stick/throttle is at desk height, if not, even a bit lower. Take a look at things which use joysticks (e.g cranes and diggers) and you'll notice that the sticks are generally a little above the knee.

I also toyed with positioning the stick and throttle at butt level either side of me, it was comfortable but impractical.

The other advice about exercise is probably useful too, unfortunately I'm allergic to that kind of thing. Its medical. Bones in my leg or something.

I'm betting the throttle and joystick are too high in relation to your body. Buy a $10 stable table, put that on your lap and the joystick and throttle on top - you will have lowered them to a better position

Just make sure you don't have your back tot he door otherwise people will initially be very embarrassed when they walk in.

But seriously though your health is important, don't do yourself an injury playing a game. I find a chair with armrests to rest your elbows on does the trick. There is no way I can play for even 20 mins with my hands on the joystick with my arms unsupported.

Yep. Me left shoulder, between the blade and the shoulder itself has been hurting since I really started playing over a week ago. It's getting better the more I play, amusingly enough.

I have a 4-way hat bound to the key speed settings (100%, 50%, 0% and boost) and a self-centering analogue mini stick bound to forward/reverse thrust. This means I only really need the actual throttle in combat, saving quite a bit of wear and tear on the old tendons and joints.

My recommendations are as follows:

Exercise. A fit body can handle things better than an unfit one. And once you start moving, it's hard to stop. Do what I do, and get an iPad and a wireless hit spot (if your fitness center doesn't have wireless) and browse the forums during cardio. Toss in strength resistance training and watch your figure come back.

Eat healthy. That will give you more energy, you'll sleep better, giving you more time to play Elite.

Ergonomics. I built one of those PVC pipe joystick stands from DIY Flight Sims, and made sure my throttle and stick are perfectly positioned for me. I didn't realize important 3 is in college, and I still suffer tendinitis from playing too much Ultima Online.

post a pic Grumbleweed, i wanna get some idea's as im playing sat on my sofa too. I currently use the misses next catalogue as a base for my new x52 pro and sit the throttle on the arm.

Something that hasn't been pointed out yet is go and see a physiotherapist. They will be able to give advice on the specific exercises which will strengthen to protect against overuse and also about ergonomics.

They'll probably give you a combination of targeted exercises and advice on posture. I've found them very good for little niggles I've had in the past.

Keeping fit definitely a good idea. Also, take regular breaks from ED (yeah, right). It may be worth getting a chair with height adjustable arm rests to ensure your arms are supported whilst using the HOTAS. Finally, try and position yourself as close to the HOTAS as possible, so that you are not leaning forward or stretching your arms to reach it.

It's a throttle? Not a chin rest? Well darn. Explains my neck ache.

I'm using the Mad Catz Fly 5 Flight Stick and gotta say it is a pleasure, button setup is bob on and the device itself makes life so much easier. Only been using it a coulple of days but I would find it hard not to have it now.

If you are using the FLY 5 like I do, and you started using the "profiler" software... It is possible that you got into the same hell I did to try and set it up properly... Found a GREAT workaround on the same forum we are now :

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=40121

FYI: You might want to start by closing Elite Dangerous, closing the Fly 5 "Profiler" and Profiler Editor" first. Just so it won't get in the way...

Don't forget to rename your original "custom.binds" to something like "custom.binds.bak" and rename the downloaded "Custom --- fly5.binds" file to "custom.binds".

Sporting a TM Warthog, Fanatec Clubsport V2 racing pedals, Obutto triple screen cockpit and DK2 :)

It is also my iRacing and work rig (hence kept the triple 27's)

Wired Xbox controller. Works great, compact. Only time I need to touch my keyboard is for the very infrequent LR thrust when docking/launching.
