I am (was) a traditional keyboard guy but finally stumped up for a joystick (Thrustmaster HOTAS X) and think it will once I have remembered all of the bindings)

Played in 84...I am a traditionalalist. Keyboard only! Works for me. Can be tricky at times.
Will invest in a joystick at some point though...

Joystick help

So I just got Elite Dangerous, however, I can't seem to be able to get past the launch screen in game. I have the x-55 saitek and I have the respective settings checked. However, when I launch the ship it brings me to a validation type screen where I have to move the joystick to check off boxes. One slight problem is that they aren't becoming checked. They blink quickly between the different boxes, failing to be checked... I probably sound like I'm rambling, and I probably am :p As I have no idea what is going on.

The ones I am having problems with:
Pitch up
Pitch Down

Landing Test

The pitch up and pitch down constantly switch with eachother, making it impossible to complete the screen. The landing test is mapped to the same button as target ahead.

The stick worked fine in the tutorials, what's up?

Made a thread in the general forums, but it seemed like that one was getting swamped by the other general stuff. I'm hoping to get a more secluded answer in this section, thank you for any help.

You need to hold the stick in place to fill the box, flicking between the axis won't register.
When you say landing test what do you mean, the landing gear?

Ah, I'm not flicking between the axis', I am indeed holding it in place.

I have figured it out though, to bypass the screen I just went in, added mouse options... and then switched it back to the Saitek x55 after I passed the screen.

Wired Xbox controller. Works great, compact. Only time I need to touch my keyboard is for the very infrequent LR thrust when docking/launching.
Actually, you do not have to. If you use default "Advanced Control Pad" setup in the game, left and right thrusts are mapped to LT and RT respectively. They just get only enabled on the approach (I guess when landing gear is on).

Yes, but remap these to the dpad controls as soon as you can. Jump the gun (pun intended) a bit and press the triggers before you get the audible "Landing gear enabled" then you might just fire inside the station, and find yourself in a whole world of hurt :D

Joystick and Controller ?????

Hi all. This may have been covered already but cant find it at all.

does anyone know if you can use a joystick and an xbox controller together.

want the xbox for the flight controls and the xbox controller for the menus and looking around

any ideas ?????

cheers

The game supports multiple controllers, so what you want should be do-able, you just have to set it up to your preferences in the controls menu.

I have one idea, get rid of the terrible colours that make your post unreadable.

I use a flight stick and a G13 game pad/board thingy with an analogue stick. I've been having trouble with the analogue stick since patch 1.04 as it was bound and stopped working and can not be bound anymore even though it works fine in the software and in other games. So the game is supposed to support multiple controllers in all kinds of crazy configurations, but just be aware that it might take some patience and tweaking to get it to run properly.

I raided the loft and came up with an old Thrustmaster 'Top Gun' joystick and a Microsoft Strategic Commander to use as a throttle.

I downloaded the brilliant app from this thread:

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18432&page=2&p=1383181#post1383181

which restores analogue inputs on the MSC and it now makes a great combined throttle and yaw control. If you have an old joystick that lacks yaw and/or you're on a bit of a budget, I can highly recommend this setup. You can pick up MSC's for next to nothing these days as Windows won't recognise them without a bit of help, and it gives an awesomely futuristic feeling control. All my plans for a HOTAS setup have gone completely out the window.

(CMDR Miko deserves all the Kudos in the world, by the way. No one poster on this forum could ever improve my game experience more than they have.)

I'll have to look into that. I tried my old thrustmaster top gun 2 controller last night & it was unplayble (uncontrollable roll & pitch), like it was out of calibration; the thrustmaster utilities showed weird effects through the range of motion.

I might just bite the bullet & buy an X55.

Edit: I ordered an X55 yesterday, it should be arriving today :)
