I actually got some Velcro that I was meaning to put on the underside and take the suckers off, left it in the car. Completely forgot about it until now. I'll give it a try - IF I can get the silly car open, it's -18c outside and frozen stiff lol.

I use Velcro on my X52, and it works very well, with barely any travel. Unfortunately, I then lost one of the suckers, which isn't so good when I want to stick it on eBay.

As far as the LED colours go though - it's a bit meh. At different brightness levels the flicker and strobing becomes annoying. Also, not every amber is the same, they have different tints on some buttons and that irritates me immensely :( So does the occasional unsticking from the surface , and you end up moving the whole controller and not the stick or throttle :( Otherwise, yeah - it's a lovely bit of kit :)

Probably made the changing colours sound more 'life altering' than I meant to. It's a nice little feature, nothing more. I hadn't noticed any flicker/strobing. I will pay more attention next time I fire it up.

As you say it is certainly 'a lovely bit of kit'.

Oh the colour changing is nice and useful, don't get me wrong! :) It makes finding boost or target or heatsink etc much easier to locate. I wish there was some easy function to change colours based on mode, but without support in-game that doesn't look possible.

You will only see flickering if you reduce the brightness, but the uneven amber colours should be obvious even at full brightness. At green or red, it's all even and looks great :)

Ooh that Saitek joystick (comes in 2 parts) looks pretty awesome.
There seems to be people in another thread reporting issues with it though relating to USB issues and driver issues.

It is a pretty nice bit of kit. But not every one has problems with it. I don't, for instance.

For heavens sake someone make a sticky post with a list of recommended or interesting input devices :D

I recommend the razor hydra just because I ordered one. No idea how good it will be :D

BTW are there any good, current and cheap FORCE FEEDBACK joysticks? That might be interesting.

I assume by what I've read there isn't mouse control supported for ED (such as like in Freelancer).

Assuming that's the case, seeing as I haven't owned a joystick for many years, Can I get some recommendations for a nice joystick please?

Preferably one that has the best compatibility, quality etc.
I like lots of buttons , thruster slider, hat, twist etc..

I use Windows 7, 64 bit.

I have tried the game with the following

1. Mouse & Keyboard - meh, it works, and to be fair there was a vast improvement with the 1.1 alpha release - requires more perseverance and patience than I possess, but I'm sure a few here will have mastered this control method

2. Logitech Gamepad - ok-ish (for me), I'm not very good with the little thumb-sticks, but if you have finer control than my big thumbs it could work really well (£25)

3. Saitek EVO - great, only letdown is a lack of buttons on the joystick (difficult to find these days - around £30-£40 when I bought mine years ago)

4. Saitek F.L.Y.5 - really great, has just enough buttons to map the main controls - it's such a shame I broke mine slamming my big thumb down on some of the buttons (also difficult to find easily, they seem to have gone up in price to around £50-£70)

5. Speedlink Black Widow - meh - not enough buttons, and not well placed, rudder control is horrible (on the throttle) - the main axes stick response is pretty good though, but would not recommend (£20 - £25)

6. Saitek X52 (not PRO) - totally awesome, has all the buttons you'll ever want, the stick responds beautifully, really cannot fault it - best joystick I have used by miles. Well worth the £100 I paid for it.

I never had any problem with my X52 (non Pro). But then I didn't plug it into a USB 3.0 port when it's a USB 2.0 device. :p

It's a great stick, and well worth the money. Can't fault it really... it is perfect for Elite.

I have been hovering over an X52pro for a while now.

however it seems my procrastination has cost me, they are getting as rare as hens teeth now.

The X55 is out any time now, but not sure how much it is gonna cost. Pretty sure it will be more than the X52pro however (£120) and certainly more than the X52 standard (£85)

if someone knows where either the 52 or the 52 pro is instock maybe it would be an idea to post in here?

wow over £127 for a non pro X52? (the one under £100 is 2nd hand)

Way too rich for me. I suppose price hiking is inevitable as stock becomes limited.

I think that is my decision made. I am going to try and get on with my MS sidewinder flightstick. She is old but hopefully can still put out when she needs to :)

can you combine multiple control methods in the alpha or not? I was thinking of using the above sidewinder but also attaching an xbox pad to it for extra buttons and axis.

Thanks for the link btw

I got the Thrustmaster T-Flight Hotas X joystick a few weeks ago.

Haven't used it much yet, and not in ED as i don't have alpha access, but quite pleased with it so far. It separates into two parts so you can have them in a more comfortable position either side of your body, and it works on PC and PS3 (used it on HAWX on PS3 so far and preferred it to joypad).

I'd definately recommend it if your budget is in the £40 range, rather than some of the other more expensive hotas sticks. My only niggle is that i'd expect the throttle to give a little more resistance. But then again i haven't used a joystick since the freebie i got from Special Reserve in the 90's, so what do i know :p

Keep an eye on it early next week - I got mine direct from Amazon, all that are left now are from resellers - Amazon will get more stock in soon and the lower price should kick in again. (£99.99)

If you guys have had any problems with the Thrustmaster T.16000 stuff, I'd love to hear about it before I commit and order mine.

On a related topic, I'm going to get pedals. The two options seem to be Saitek and CH. Which ones should I get?

Oh mouse control is definitely supported!

Having said that - if you are using mouse and keyboard, you will probably very likely be eaten alive by everyone with a joystick/throttle setup, including those unconscious and/or logged off ;)

I'd suggest the X52 Pro, but really any stick is going to be a vast improvement for you.

I thoroughly disprove of the uncontrolled hyperbole contained in Asp's post. It just serves to put the cost of entry in to Elite: Dangerous up even further, when it is absolutely NOT necessary.

Anyone who is a competent mouse and keyboard user for other games who doesn't mind spending a little bit of time adjusting to flight in Elite: Dangerous will get to grips with mouse and keyboard (MKB) and be able to thoroughly represent their side of any engagement. My mouse and keyboard video series shows that well enough in single player, and will be happy enough to prove the point again in multiplayer.

As with all games and control methods, you will not be conscious of them, and your ingame character/ship becomes a fluid extension of your imagination. Now how is that for hyperbole

You will have to adjust to flying in Elite: Dangerous no matter which controller you use, hang with it and improve, get better and enjoy yourself, no matter which controller type you have.

Also, the X52-pro is awesome, I have one too :D

Yep, +1 for the X52 Pro!
Got mine on Amazon for just under £120, cheaper than sourcing one from any local store here in Germany, including online stores.

Had a cyborg x (Saitek fly5) and the the comfort difference alone is huge. If you are going to be playing lots, then the X52 or the pro version is for me the best value for money.

However, if you can try the xbox 360 controller, do that, just in case.

I can recommend my joystick, the Thrustmaster T16000. Its relatively cheap, has lots of mappable buttons, twist grip, throttle, and a good accurate feel to it, its also fit for both left and right handers (something missed by most manufacturers!). And to cap it all off, it works in every game i've played.
