Wonder if anyone can help me, ok just took delivery of a Thrustmaster hotas x, but I can't fly for toffee with the thing.

Firstly I can't seem to get it to configure properly, so the thrust controller, seems to want me to pull back to thrust forward and thrust forward to reverse thrust? I can switch off flight assist but it immediately comes back on again?
Make sure to set flight assist to toggle, use the invert axis option to get the directions to suit your preference.
And also what is it with the sensitivity? I have to really move the stick to get it to do anything, but then when it does it constantly overshoots, its not very sensitive or too sensitive. I appreciate that like driving for the first time its hard to find the sweet spot without practice, but this seems cumbersome.
Are you sure you properly configured the options to use the x and y axis of the joystick for pitch and roll? If you go to controller configuration and it says "Y axis + bound to whatever, Y axis - bound to whatever" then that's probably your problem. It was in my experience. The box you want to use to set the axes is the one with the invert button and deadzone slider next to it.

As for the subject of the thread itself, I'm currently using a cheap logitech attack 3 joystick plus keyboard inputs. I'm looking to replace it but I'm not sure what to get since so many joysticks on the market are ergonomically suited for the right handed. Out of those that are ambidextrous or configurable for the left-hand (which isn't a great selection) I haven't made up my mind yet.

Arbanax, I started the thread below because I was really struggling for a start with the Thrustmaster. Have a look for some possible solutions. Ultimately I found slackening off the tension underneath the joystick and a whole bundle of practice. I never had any issues with key bindings or the throttle though.

Hope that helps, I found the transition from 360 pad to Thrustmaster very challenging at first but if you practice it will all come together.

Quick reply as gotta rush out again, but thanks for the assistance and suggestions guys. This forums are the most helpful, sure I'll get there eventually. Glad I am not the only one struggling from the xbox controller ;-0

Just bought an X-55 for £149, seemed a good deal given that the only X-52 Pros I can find (actually in stock) are £129 and the cheapest new CH Fighterstick and Pro Throttle I fond were imported from Belgium at £180.

Still, I've wanted my own spaceship since I was seven, and I certainly have the buttons for it now.

I had an X55 which arrived with a POV fault, so is currently on its way back.

Returned to my old Saitek Cyborg 3D but for some reason I have to configure the controls each time I load up the game?

Any ideas?

Check if you have this folder:
C:\Users\"Your Username"\AppData\Roaming\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options

Do you have special characters in Username such as Ö?

I got my CH combatstick and CH pro pedals, just ordered CH pro throttle. I also have trackIR 5 to look around.

What's up with the throttle?

Hi All,

OK, here's what I want (well, right after a Pony and a Plastic Rocket!):
Set my joystick throttle to the middle. When I move it up, I go forward, when I move it back to the middle, I stop. When I move it down, I go backwards.
Unfortunately that's not what I'm experiencing.
On my "Thrust Master Top Gun Afterburner II" , I am flailing wildly between full throttle forward and then full throttle in reverse.
On my "Logitech Extreme 3D Pro", the throttle is smaller and easier to flail.
Although, when using my favorite "A.T.R.A.B." (Attack then run away backwards) against the Anaconda escort ships, suddenly my flailing no longer allows me to go in reverse!
Help me Auggie Be Doggie, your my only hope! (or anyone else out there)

Hi FlukeStarbucker,

Please check that you have only bound your joystick's throttle axis once to "Throttle Axis" and no other throttle input.

I would make sure that you have "Throttle increments" set to continuous before trying other settings.

There should be a setting called "Throttle range" in controls settings.
I think that you have it set to "Full Range". You need to change it to "Forward only".

Joystick help?

Hello,

I wonder if people could offer some advice,

I decided to buy a joystick to play ED because a lot of people say it give the game a better feel. I know if this only a person opinion.

Normally I use a 360 controller, and have never used a modern Joystick so its a little weird getting used to.

Can any offer any advice on what games I could play to get use to the control style.

I already have Prem Beta, and have been playing a lot with 360 controller, But i'm kinda struggling with the joystick. But I know it just practice that's required.

So any advice would be greatly appreciated

Thanks
Rich

It is better to practice in ED single player scenarios. ED has rather unique flight controls and single player scenarios are almost ideal for such training.

I take it you mean that you aren't in the Premium Beta and you'd like something to play in the meantime that might give you a feel for playing Elite on a joystick?

I'd say WarThunder would be worth a download, as its a pitch & roll game. Its free and comes with a bunch of single player missions you can do without having to bother with all that online arena stuff. Make sure you play it in first person cockpit mode though ;)

EDIT: Sorry just read that you have premium Beta - so that's your best bet obviously!

No sorry I'm in the Prem beta so been playing the Alpha 1.1 a lot. Seems to be a lot easier with 360 controller.

Didn't want to get too frustrated with ED while i'm still learning the art of Joystick controller. So hense why I was looking for something to help learn the fine are of joystick controls ready for May 30th.

Most likely shouldn't have posted this really I've most like put a target on my back lol. Or maybe I should get some learner plates.

If I'm reading that correctly you already have ED, so I'd use that.

The single player scenarios are really good to let you get your eye in, meddle with control settings, do bizarre things, crash a lot etc.

Practice helps.
