No sorry I'm in the Prem beta so been playing the Alpha 1.1 a lot. Seems to be a lot easier with 360 controller.

Didn't want to get too frustrated with ED while i'm still learning the art of Joystick controller. So hense why I was looking for something to help learn the fine are of joystick controls ready for May 30th.

Most likely shouldn't have posted this really I've most like put a target on my back lol. Or maybe I should get some learner plates.

Could you describe why joystick controls seem more difficult to you? What is the difference between joystick and XBOX controller. Which joystick do you have?

Hey guys along with several others, it seems, I've also been trying to get used to using my new Birthday present a Thrustmaster hotas joystick. But I've also found it to be a steep learning curve. It is getting marginally easier, but after playing for half an hour or maybe longer in scenario 2 and still not being able to take down the sidewinder, I was getting too tired and decided to quite.

It would be really great if there was a better learning curve in E: D. as I think for the casual gamer being told that you need to keep practicing till you get good enough, is a bit of a put off. I know some of you old school gamers probably think we've never had it so good etc. But it would be great if offline you could make some allowances to learn, gain the necessary muscle memory (and confidence let alone fun) before being trounced on in a multiplayer environment.

Anyway that wasn't my real point, I've got a bit confused with putting which buttons with what. Some of the choices frankly just boggle the mind and with limited time to play, it would be great if we could have a better explanation of what things should be assigned to what button and how.

Also for the more knowledgeable phrases like, "bound your joystick's throttle axis once to "Throttle Axis" and no other throttle input." get thrown around and some of us are not sure if this applies to us or not. Nor what it means.

Has anyone got a guide showing what they have mapped to what on the Thrustmaster? I'd really like to know what works best, or at least what works because its hard not to just press the keyboard but in so doing having to leave the controls means you get into a bit of a mess quickly.

I realise the other option is voice attack, but this isn't always appropriate, if I am playing later and shouting commands, etc. Anyway any help for a novice flyer with little skill would be much appreciated the curve is pretty steep already. Thanks

Yeah I think you're all right, ED would be best to practice.

Didn't really realize the difference in between how a 360 controller and Joystick.

It basically the difference between a Boxer and Ballerina.

Thanks the for advice, I'll keep plugging on. If you do see me in space please beware because I might not have full control of my ship. :D

Thrustmaster has 2 HOTAS, namely HOTAS X and Warthog, which one do you have?

I guess that by assigning throttle to throttle axis means that you shouldn't assign throttle to "Increase/decrease throttle", which are digital controls, while axis - is analogue. This applies to other axes as well.

First of all you should have a list of buttons that you use more often than the others. Learn to use them first. Then add other controls.

I brought a black widow, Didn't want to spend too much just incase I didn't like it.

My main issue are the fine controls, I suppose it too many years playing console stuff, Time to learn to play big boy games :D

I have the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00009OY9U/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 which is a solidly made, good quality stick I last used to play Oolite and Star Wars Galaxies with.

I am, of course, an old Elite player from the 1980's, being introduced to it via the Commodore 64 in 1986. I first played the game with an ORIGINAL Atari 2600 joystick :)

So what do you all think of that stick, and should I replace it? It has everything you should need, including a throttle, lots of buttons, and the "twist" axis (forgot what it's called).

I recently bought the Premium Beta, and I guess the Alpha 1 content is all we get until 5/30, I have played the first couple scenarios in it just to get an idea of how the controls work. I noticed there isn't a preset for the Logitech Extreme 3D, and the throttle by default would cause my ship to thrust left or right, not forward! I figured out how to remap that, but it'd help if there was a preset for this stick.

Thanks everybody those vids (Nice also to hear a brummie accent, being a brummie living in Germany).

Also that link about sensitivity is exactly what i'm having at the moment. that's going to be a very usefull read.

Have you taken a look at Zieman's reply to you previous post? He pretty much covered all your questions and posted pictures for you to help with the setup your control in game.

In ED control setup menu, you will find a field where you can bind "Throttle Axis" and "Throttle Input", so just bind your throttle to throttle axis. Take a look at the pictures Zieman posted and it should help.

Looks like you have bound the joystick's axes as digital buttons. Unbind them (e.g clkick Pitch up & hit esc, once for each button-bind) and bind the axes to axes.

And the thrust, you might want to invert axis for it. And maybe put it in Forward only -mode, with a button assigned for reverse.

Hi Aleksej

Firstly sorry for being unclear, Hotas X, couldn't justify spending so much for the other beast.

Ok as to your comment, but I am afraid this makes no sense to me, "you shouldn't assign throttle to "Increase/decrease throttle", which are digital controls".

I have two controllers, one is the throttle stick on my left that increases or decreases speed, and this is my primary stick for making me go forward or backward. Then the other stick, has all the myriad of controls to it, that I have pitching me forward and backward, (or up and down if you prefer) I have to twist it to spin on the spot left and right (I think this is referred to as Yaw) and there is a 'hat' switch a bit like a thumb stick on an xbox controller, which at present controls my power distribution, but I'd love to be able to use to also look at panels, and or just look about, but not sure how to do that.

Then there are a whole range of buttons about 12 or 13. I appreciate assigning these is a matter of personal taste, but I'd like to know how others have set theirs up.

And please bare in mind I am a novice, I do not know what most of the terms are, so please go easy ;-)

Thanks again.

Unfortunately, I cannot help you with using the joystick to look around as I have TrackIR for this purpose.
I would assign two buttons for left and right UI panels. A button to select nearest hostile, buttons for primary and secondary fire, it is better to use hat for power distribution. Also boost and reverse are useful.

Here are the bindings I'm using.

A full size A4 printable .pdf can be downloaded from my website, here.

Also available is a blank version for you to scribble on and editable pixelmator and photoshop files for adding your own text.

Be aware that the photoshop file was exported from pixelmator so it might not be perfect.

I've thought about getting the version of that joystick that doesn't have the left hand throttle control (has a throttle below the stick instead).

Actually, it is very convenient to have throttle separately from joystick for the left hand.

I was always used to playing Elite very similarly to the way I played Wing Commander, XWing/TIE Fighter, and Star Wars Galaxies Jump to Lightspeed, with a stick in my right hand and using the keyboard with the left.

If I didn't need to let go of the stick and use the keyboard while flying, I guess I could use a 2 handed controller...

You need to assign a throttle axis is what he means. The throttle isn't ON or OFF it's just like your accelerator pedal in your car. So in the setup you need to go to the throttle axis, click on the PRIMARY column box and then move the throttle in your left. Job done.

There is no need to bind a keyboard key for the throttle.

Now go into the game, and see if it works. My throttle was backwards first up, so when I had it pushed away I had no speed, pulled to me full speed. SO back in the panel, and click "inverted" to "ON".

This depends on whether you have enough buttons on the HOTAS to bind everything you need.

I just orderd (with some help) a slightly used x52 pro online. I hope it is good match i never played such game like this before.
