Hi guys,

I got access to the standard beta combat practise yesterday.

I have
* Thrustmaster T.Flight Hotas X
* Voice Attack
* CH Prod Rudder pedals
* and I will use a Oculus Rift DK2 so I don't need functions to look around in the cockpit

During my first missions, I found that the 12 buttons of the HOTAS are not enough. Do you have good suggestions what functions I can move to the VoiceAttack and pedals (and how?).
Thanks for your suggestions.

If you have an android or Ipad you could use Roccat power grid, your then have a ships touch screen control panel. Can use more than one tablet or touch screen phone if you like.

On a side note my Warthog arrived today.
This thing is s beast! :)

My chair VESA mounts arrived today, ordered a pair of these:

http://cpc.farnell.com/jsp/search/productdetail.jsp?SKU=ST02463

They fit the arms of my office chair perfectly, ready and waiting to have the controls of my choice mounted on them! Now just waiting on my X52 Pro order from overclockers.co.uk to be dispatched. Not sure when that is likely to happen though, they were supposed to get stock in today, but the page now says "overdue" (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GC-043-SK).

Bah.

I use head tracking and a X52. I think the most important thing for someone with a Rift where joysticks are concerned is to have the two hats on the main stick like most HOTAS do. You don't have the luxury of looking down at your keyboard so you need to be able to access everything in your hands.

With HOTAS with the two hats on your stick you can navigate all the ship system computers without moving your hands. Just look at the screen area for them to pop up, use top hat to move through tabs, bottom hat to move through columns, fire to toggle setting. It's pretty much second nature.

Looks like having 2 hats comes at a premium price since I haven't seen any other of the cheaper sticks that have more then 1.

Any opinions on the saitek x45? Looks like i can pick that up on ebay very cheaply.

I've been agonizing over this decision too.

Brumster put together a video that makes a good case for the old school CH HOTAS. For me, the main point is the mini-joystick nub on the throttle which can be used for translation with proportional power. The X-52 / X-55 only seems to have a mouse for that, and since I plan to get a Rift, I don't need it for mouselook.

I have a similar setup to Brumster's, except I have a newer model Fighterstick. It is exceptionally sweet, and I'm rather convinced it's the best HOTAS available commercially. Having the analogue thumb-stick for translational thrusters is amazing.

The two hat setup is standard in the ED control settings. But you might be able to rig your own system that uses a single hat. Especially if you can have a shift button that adds another set of functions to your controls. Then you could just have shift to change your energy system control hat to a computer systems control hat when you hold down a button.

I haven't tried the X45 but I believe it is similar to the X52 but doesn't have a twist rudder.

FYI. In ED with HOTAS the functions of the HATS are usually. Throttle hat for lateral thrusters, Top hat for targeting, bottom hat for energy management. When looking at the screen the two hats switch to ship computer navigation.

The twist rudder obviously does ship yaw rotation. It's pretty weak in ED but still quite useful.

...

How terrible do you think it would be to use just the mad cats FLY5 stick for now?

...

I would say don't buy one, but if you already have one.. if it is the same stick as the cyborg X, it is fine, but will develop some "bend" at the adjustable neck angle joint that makes it feel a bit cheap(er). I would also recommend getting some sort of clamp to fix the back down, as forwards action does tip it easily and the stick needs a lot of downward pressure to prevent movement. The thrust pin that keeps the 2 levers locked also flew out of the unit on mine a few months ago and will not go back in. I have had the stick for at least half a decade though... collecting dust in a drawer until ED came along. There is also the ageing saitek st290 pro or the more adjustable st290 evo. I picked a pro up for less than £20 on ebay when searching for cheap alternatives to hotas. It's not as good as the FLY 5/Cyborg X in my opinion though but does have twist rudder.

I think from what I have heard you will not go wrong getting the T16000 though, and with the Target software that comes with the warthog also supporting that stick and the hall sensor tech in there, it will probably be the last stick you buy (or the first of 2, as you can program them as a pair!)

I'd agree here, though I like to have everything on a button, with 2 hats, or at least 1 hat and 2 horizontal navigation buttons you can navigate all the menus to do stuff like landing gear, cargo scoop. With the advent of the old bill (police) up coming, speed entering the dock or hyperspace will be less important.

I also got a steal of a buy on an X45 along the way before giving in to my credit card and the warthog.. sadly it was not working, with the pots totally shot. The stick feel is plastic and light, with silly knuckle protection and an unwieldy pinky switch thing that makes it a cramped space for medium hands like mine even. And no twist rudder.

The throttle worked, but the rudder (would-be twist) control is a spring loaded rocker switch under the grip for your index/3rd finger to operate. This is hard to reach and becomes impossible at full thrust depending on the angle of your arm. I would prefer to go with a thrust control on one of the cheaper joystick bases.

Without twist on the stick I wouldn't even buy one to do a renewal job on.

I'm going to see if i can snag an x45 real cheaply on ebay - couple going for $20 right now. If i can snag one at that price, it'll be worth it i think. And if i don't suck horribly at this game, i can look into picking up a better one later on.

Make sure you get one that works! Or you would be better off finding a working X52 throttle on it's own to match with any other joystick. Messing about with dead zones to make up for aged pots will ruin your playtime.

I just did a search for "saitek x52" on ebay and there are a LOT of hits in the US right now.

yeah there are plenty of x52's on ebay - but the x45 is selling for about 1/3 of the price. Just compare the buy it now price between the x45 and x52

So i'm going to try and bid on one and snag it cheap.

Joystick novice here! Just purchased myself a Thrustmaster T.Flight Hotas X and playing the combat scenarios (standard beta user).

I have the basic settings selected in the options which seems ok at the moment but maybe thats because I don't know what I'm doing at the moment! I was always a keyboard user in classic Elite and I'm struggling a bit with combat at the moment.

I'm finding I can get the aim close to an enemy ship but getting it spot on is very frustrating. I seem to move the stick a little and nothing happens then a little more and its moved too much. Is it just practice or is there some fine adjustment that I'm not aware of?

Thanks for any help!

Have you adjusted the dead-zone of the Joystick? Trying turning it down, which should allow for finer movements.

I will use my thrustmaster flight stick X. It is almost identical to the HOTAS X, it just has a bigger base with integrated thrust control and lots of buttons.

Has anyone tried combining joystick with keyboard? Is it even possibe? If yes, what are your impressions?

I have, yes. My previous joystick was a Logitech Attack 3 (which is not a great stick for this game, but I had it lying around so why not).

Managed to get through all the combat scenarios with this setup.

I guess the biggest thing you're missing out on is finetuned controls for lateral and vertical thrust, and throttle.

Instead I used trottle presets for 50% and 100% and this seemed to work ok for combat (and hardly made use of the lateral/vertical thrust).

I have since upgraded to a Thrustmaster HOTAS X which arrived today, can't wait to set it up!

The one time i assume I'm not going to get lucky, I get lucky.

I actually snagged an x45 on ebay for $28, which is cheaper than the average price it's going for. but, i assumed someone would bid it up, so I went an got one for $35 on a buy it now auction, plus $5 shipping. Oh well, $40 is still a pretty good price since that's the average, but i don't think includes shipping.
