The lack of social tools and chat in Elite:Dangerous is simply not understandable.

The lack of social tools in Elite:Dangerous is simply not understandable.

At the moment game barely functions as online game. Player interaction is almost limited to chance meeting at random instances for a very brief moments.

The interaction, be it attempt at friendship or hostility is near impossible - And its game launch where most of players are concentrated in one point.
What will happen when players drift off and start playing less ? Most likely seening CMDR tag will be as rear as snow in July.

Even if you bring friends (made outside of the game) grouping, co-working or even communicating is so futile you have to resort to outside aplications like skype or teamspeak.

Influencing the game economy or political systems - which is the main point of always online requirement is made pointless if the players can not organise in guilds or coorporations and work towards common goal.

Not to mention that if you need help or advice . you have to resort to alt-tabbing - completely destroying the immersion game works so hard to achieve.

The future of game is in community. Organisations , corporations , pirates , mobs , trade alliances ... friends. None of this will happen if there are no social tools and chat.

The game will wither and fade suffering very short life cycle as all single player games.

Which is a god damn shame. Please Mr Braben , dont kill this game.

I agree, the social aspect needs a big revamp. the trouble is though the scale of the game is so huge chances of people seeing each other in a WHOLE GALAXY, is minute at best! You want more social tools it will come at the cost of a much smaller playable area so people can meet each other more often.

has it occurred to people the idea of the lonly explorer or the lone wolf trader/ hunter is precicly what the game is all about?

oh really?

Then I guess you'd be pretty shocked to be told that I still play Frontier and that's over 20 years old.
Hehe indeed. :)

Things are coming. Nothing is withering away. Early 2015 we get Wings. The coop expansion. Im sure more social stuff is added to it. 2014 is over in 2 weeks so... Chill will ya. ;)

It needs more social tools that is for sure. They need to have some sort of solar system chat so you can see who is in the solar system and chat to multiple people at once. I mean chatting to just one person at once is a bit lame. The thing is, is that you feel *Alone* when you are traveling from solar system to solar system, simply because there are no chat boxes coming up and players talking to each other in that system. Also you should be able to warp to a friend/group player if you are in the same solar system (and i don't mean FSD wake) i mean going on to their name and clicking *warp to member* . I love this game, i really do but if they do not add some *MMO* necessary features, then the game will not last long and that's the honest truth. If they do not add anything to resolve this soon, well then i fear this game (That i love right now) may not be very future proof the way it is going. Peace.

Yes the coms are rubbish. What little is there doesn't even work most of the time. Judging by my attempts to text chat with people in my friends list. Something simple like that which is outside of the game should work but hasn't the last few days, unless it was fixed with the new server update?

Multiplayer is completely useless because they opted for a cheap p2p design. They don't want to encourage groups of players because that would highlight the problems. That is the only explanation I can think of.

No reason it shouldn't be posted again either. This is a priority set of features for a game like this.

How is it a priority, "

Local Chat:
Hi,
Hi how are you
Good you.
Great,
Bye
Bye"

For me and my friends we all sit on a comms app talking as Typeing in a heavy combat zone is "lets put it this way, a death sentence....." which is why ED put 6 man Comms ability into the game.

As for zone chat..... just like all MMO its a dumping group for rubbish chat comments.....

As much as i would like to see some sort of local channel system, or an Help channel for new players, i dont think it will happen.
Why you ask? Well seeing what goes around in the big mmos you need to moderate them. This calls for more Gamemaster support. And that costs money. FD isnt a big company and the dont have the steady income of a suscrition or P2W game.

I may be wrong here but, to my knowlege this is a legal requirement when hosting an online communications plattform today (when doing it in Europe or North America anyway).

They should have CB radio type channels where you can flick through a number of channels with a max potential number in each and be able to swap channel to a quiet one for some privacy. Since you are not going to get more than 32 in game at once, perhaps 8 channels of up to 4 layers each (or whatever sizes work best when the wing feature is added).

When I was on the xblive beta we played moto gp (motorbike racing game) and one cool thing was the closest 4 people being on the same channel. So you could chat with the closest riders if you wanted. Seems ideal for this game since I rarely see more than one other player at a time when supercruising through a system. Just being able to hold the talk button and chat would be cool.

I wonder how many of the backers had social tools very high on their list of killer features, especially the ones that were on a nostalgia trip from their 1984 experiences? Very few, I'd say.

I suspect the voice chat might work differently? Private channels for groups, reception based on distance from each other? Equipment upgrades, ability to intercept messages? I don't know but I'll bet there's more to it that basic p2p

I'm one of the 84's and don't really care that much for mp gaming. Certainly not MMO's. But that doesn't mean that simple 1 - 4 player chat shouldn't work and be pretty effortless. Especially if they are trying to be somewhat realistic with reception based on distance. They have a nice radio interference system going which is cool.

I'd probably use chat more if it was easy to use and worked. So far I can't even text chat my buddies that are in my War Thunder joystick squadron who started playing ED too.

Sadly, this is the rumour that is going around.

However. This would even be acceptable if they kept the offline play as promised. They could say :" Look, E:D is in core single player game, and online is just afterthought"
But with inclusion of always online their message is exactly opposite.

So is this online game , mr Braben ?

Either add online game features , or enable offline play and admit its single player game.

Just to repeat what I've been writing in other posts, we need com channels or frequencies like real airplanes have.

approach, ground, chat channel, plane to plane and so on....

As i said, its not a technical reason.

Maybe its one of FD stranger ideas to do this on purpose. The devs are pretty oldschool about a lot of things.

But my money is on the fixed costs of moderating and policing bigger chatchannels. Doing a Eve online style chat system would mean a lot more support personal employed by FD to handle all the upcomming harassment issues.

So under the constraints of tight timelines and a small development team, would you have preferred your release on 16/12 to include a) a decent flight model and fewer showstopper bugs, or b) a chat system?

Yep. Priorities.
