General / Off-Topic The Mandalorian TV series

You're quoting EDanaII, so maybe he needs to get canned. Figure out who he is in real life and get him fired from his job. In fact, ship him off to Siberia for his dangerous ideas. You will be doing your country a great service, comrade.

Don't want to be venomous about it, ( or about anything) myself. Sometimes a smiley isn't sufficient to defang a statement.
As the mask issue is not even the thing and everybody agrees on it anyhow... it's not a problem on my side.

The people with the big brains always assume they are the guardians of "right and wrong" thinking. With true wisdom comes humility, not hubris.

A fool thinks himself to be wise, but a wise man knows himself to be a fool.
-- William Shakespeare: As You Like It

For the record, I'm pro-mask, and I believe people who break the laws and government mandates regarding mask wearing should be judged accordingly (including that idiot Rand Paul). I do not think people should lose their jobs over sharing sincere skepticism via their personal Twitter accounts. But all of this is a red herring, because Gina was not fired based on her views about masks, she was fired because, "her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable" according to Disney. That's the discussion we should be having in this thread. If Disney's accusations are true, then Gina should have been banned from Twitter or at least have certain tweets censured. Personally I disagree with Disney, though I think they could have truthfully said, "her social media posts are culturally and religiously insensitive, and we do not share her views" and not have fired her. And if she is in breech of contract by expressing her personal views on Twitter, then Disney should come out and say so.

And, I'm not anti-mask, as I already suggested. What I am is: every choice has a consequences, and every consequence has choices. Which, if you look at the argument I raised, that's exactly what I was suggesting: that the whole issue was a little broader than how some people might present it.

Personally, I think Gina should have "kept her mouth shut" about politics and focused on being a good role model, which she was to many young girls and women. She could still be conservative and not hide that fact, and that alone would have gotten her message across without constantly poking the beehive. The left is NOT the only side with people lacking humility.. Though I do think that on average, the left does have the bigger brains. 🤷

Have you actually looked at her quote? Out of curiosity, I checked it out. Basically, what she said was that some people were "poisoning of the well" against others today. She suggested that this also happened in Nazi Germany to dehumanize people and, therefore, legitimize violence against them. That's not racist, that's a sad fact. She mentioned the Jews, who were, in fact, demonized by the Nazis. That's a very sad fact. That demonization was used to justify violence. Another extremely sad fact.

The outrage seems to be that she dared suggest it was conservatives that were the target of today's dehumanization and how dare she make such accusations in this day and age!! This day and age? This is a tactic that has been used by all ever since we first formed into tribes. And the wise man knows it will continue to be used into whatever dystopian future does await us.

(Reminder - I'm a moderate who finds both the left and right to be right and wrong, depending on the specific topic, and I'm humble enough to admit I'm an idiot who really doesn't know as much as I think so I won't cancel anyone who thinks differently than me as long as they are not an asp about it.)

No one is 100% right. That's the whole point of our Republican Democracy. Or is it Democratic Republic? ;) We're supposed to argue and meet in the middle. And while I can pose my opinions strongly, I know they're exactly that: opinions. Too many people confuse the facts with opinions. I also know that if I never test and challenge them, I'll never have a reason to change them.

Yes I looked at that quote. It didn't offend me any, nor do I believe that she had any intention of offending anyone, but as others have pointed out, it really is unwise to appropriate the holocaust for anything less than genocide against a people, and I really don't think Republicans are facing genocide. Of course Pedro Pascal can inference the holocaust and not get any blow back, but that's liberal Hollywood for you.

Personally I wish professionals in the spotlight would just use their Twitter to share professional things, like how their day is going on the set, rather than using it as a political platform to shove their politics down our throats. I don't need tv & movie stars telling me what to think or how to think it, be it a liberal star or conservative star. FWIW, liberals "started it", so I can see why conservatives in Hollywood feel the need to even the scales, but I'm kinda sick of all of it TBH. I watch shows like The Mandalorian and play games like ED and SE to escape this screwed-up world for a few minutes each week.

Speaking of, this topic has exhausted me, so I take my leave. Y'all have fun!

Or is it Democratic Republic?

Kleptocratic plutocracy.

We're supposed to argue and meet in the middle.

In a functional democracy, caving to argument to moderation fallacies isn't desirable.

Compromise is sometimes required, but it's often not a good thing. The middle position between beneficial and harmful is not an optimal position.

Of course Pedro Pascal can inference the holocaust and not get any blow back

He seems to be getting considerable blow back from some outlets that have completely missed the problem people had with Carano and her significantly more spurious comparison, as well as those who think she was dropped for any one thing she said or did.

The middle position between beneficial and harmful is not an optimal position.
As long as Morbad gets to determine what is beneficial and what is harmful, what could possibly go wrong?

Ooops, I said I was going to quit this debate. Stop quoting me! :p

Yeah, I think this is the bigger issue. Recent tech has made people..."lax in considerations?". People used to keep the garbage in their brains inside, now it just spills out all over the place. I suppose there's a case to be said that it's better to know what a person really is thinking rather than what they're pretending to be but holding your tongue can be held to be as a having a measure of respect and it seems there doesn't seem to be much respect going 'round anymore. 🤷‍♂️

All my garbage is nicely curated and preserved in boxes like the Indiana Jones warehouse. No social media, thanks. 🖖

Since people are only talking about what bad things someone said on Twitter, i'd like to make a change of direction.

I saw Pedro Pascal in Prospect (Edit: initially wrote Extinction, watched both, got confused with film names) last night. Decent film. A little strange. Good acting by Pedro though.

I get that and it is not without merit but sometimes those people are able to use their exposure to talk about things that maybe politicians or the media are not when they should be. It does 'raise awareness' (a phrase I despise) on some issues that need it.

With great power comes great responsibility.

The more bonkers celebrities would be better off employing someone to tweet for them, but that's not really how bonkers works 🤷‍♀️.

Disney Minus
Disney is a pile of dog poo, I don’t even know where to start!
The latest goof ball is the warning label on the muppet show 🙄🤪😂

Disney: we fired Gina
Swedish chef: vert da feuk!

They want strong women but not really, because only as a commercial gimmick, she is a strong, beautiful and intelligent woman who won’t bend the knee, good for her, other actors wrote silly comments and nothing happen, so they need to get off the high horse and get a reality check.

I’ve actually check Gina out because I didn’t know much about her and she is one tough cookie! and my daughter loves her that’s enough for me!

If you take a moment to analyze what Gina said, there was nothing really wrong with it. Distilled to it's simplest elements, she said: "people were dehumanized in the past to justify actions against them". And, sadly, it's true. The more specific example that she gave, that caused all the co-called outrage, was, just as sadly, true. But, no, cancel her! She's speaking out against the narrative!

Much ado over nothing... except for those who have a political agenda.

What she said was not offending or hate speech or anything at all, it was just an analogy.

what she could have used instead was the poem from Niemöller

First they came for the Communists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Communist

Then they came for the Socialists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Socialist

Then they came for the trade unionists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a trade unionist

Then they came for the [cannot be mentioned so replace with whatever]
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a [insert]

Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me

I quite disagree with some of the things Gina said but I hate the speech fascists much more, so disney can stuff the mandalorian up their arx.
I'm not ready to close the door on the Mandalorian just yet, but I respect everyone who is. I did "cancel" my Disney+ subscription, in that I turned off auto-renew (I ordered an entire year in advance to save cash), hoping Disney gets a notification and actually takes note. We'll see what I do when renewal hits in December. Right now I'm enjoying what is good, which was Mandalorian Season 1&2, Clone Wars & Rebels, Wandavision, and the rest of the Marvel stuff coming this year - all the stuff done by cool people like John and Dave (who are not responsible for Gina's firing).

But once Disney+ turns into the CW, and sadly it's looking like they may go in that direction, then I'm out. It'll all probably depend on who wins the civil war - Kathleen Kennedy or Jon Favreau.
