The new Tobii eyetracker 4C is awesome

An interesting opinion FoxTwo. I ordered one from Amazon today which is due to arrive tomorrow so it will be interesting to see how I get on with it. I have a TrackIR and have have various models of them for years. The hat clip or flimsy LED clip thing drove me mad and I never really found satisfactory settings to leave it on all the time. I am hoping the Tobii 4C is more natural. Though there is a lot of mixed feelings about it that seem to fly around. What helped convince me to try one was this YouTube video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eTFX4rLFg7Y which seems to show how well it can be tamed. I think what could be useful would be on the fly switchable configurations. One for very lazy general flying and sightseeing etc. and the other switched in for combat. Possibly it can be done? Looking forward to trying it.

Ah well I have now been playing with it for about a week, and I have refined my profile for ED.

I totally deadzoned eye-tracking (since I'm used to head tracking). That means under the "GAZE" settings, my RESPONSIVENESS is 0%... complete deadzone.

Due to the above, I switched back to "DIRECT" mode for head tracking, since the screen no longer moves when I look at my gauges cuz I nulled out Gaze Responsiveness. In DIRECT mode, head tracking feels as natural as with TrackIR.

The graph for tracking (whether eye or head) seems to be 1 graph for both X and Y (and Z for roll). So it's an all-or-nothing approach. If you want one axis sensitive enough, ALL other axises (axii/ axes) will be that same sensitivity.

Ehmm... I doubt even TrackIR could do switchable profiles. At least I don't remember it being able to. I know for sure the Tobii is less configurable than TrackIR, and such a thing doesn't exist (or at least not apparent to me).

ps: Only 1 thing kinda irritates me with the Tobii - Everytime I put my hand up whether to rub my nose, push my spectacles back on my nose, etc etc, the Tobii will lose track. Once my hand is down, the track is back.

Well it turned up today and I am not too impressed when comparing with the TrackIR. The only good thing was I didn't have to wear a baseball cap. I disabled the gaze settings as the view was wandering all over the place. I set to Direct which turned into into the same sort of thing as the TrackIR except only 3 DOF instead of 6. But the crunch came when I tried looking up. It didn't like that at all. Probably due to the low mounting of the thing. I will have another play, but not very hopeful.

How much does this gadget cost? I just picked up an EDTracker Pro for less than $50 and it works fabulously. I was pulling off FA Off canyon racing stunts I'd never dreamed possible with the thing. On the down side my wife said it looked pretty silly sitting on top of my already gargantuan Fidelio X2 headphones...

I dont know the US price but the UK cost is around £120. I have played with EDTracker which is a brilliant device. If you don't mind something strapped to your head. This was the reason I wanted to try Tobii in the hope I didn't have to wear an ancillary. I don't usually wear headphones as I have a good Bose gaming speaker system.

I'm looking at buying a head or eye tracker, but don't know which one is the best. It seems that the Tobii has more features and doesn't require strapping something to your head. That's a big plus.

I'd imagine that there are things like the Kinect out there or at least in development. I don't want the Rift because I don't want to wear something that large on my face and I also like to be able to use my keyboard.

I guess I have some research to do.

I have my 4C set to face tracking only. Works well, but I have issues with the device losing connectivity while playing Elite. Tobii is pretty good about bug fixes though.

VR goggles were simply not an option for me, so I discarded that idea right off the bat. As Wrongway said the Tobii doesn't require the user to wear anything so that's a big plus if you don't use a headset. The EDTracker is very sweet to use and is very cheap to purchase, but you do have to wear it strapped to your head and deal with the wire dangling alongside the headphone wire.

Aye. Not having to attach anything to the head is one of the big advantages. The drawbacks are that people with really big monitors usually report problems and that you have to be a bit close to the screen for my taste. Other things to mention would be that the device went through a number of reliability problems, which seems to have been fixed by the last patch of the eyetracker software. (But it really needs to be connected to a USB2.0 port, it can run into issues when on a USB3 port, it seems. ) That being said, i have to compliment their support people, i had a lot of contact to them since i bought this device, as i found a number of problems, but they were patient, analysed and got things fixed.
.
At the moment i still have to note one issue specific to this game: the head tracking works fine in three directions: left, right and down. But as pilot you often want to bring you head up all the way. You might run into a limit there, where you'd wish the device would allow you to go up further. This already has been improved a lot and the developers promised to still bring another upgrade to the tracking algorythm there, to allow even more head movement.
.
So things are not prefect yet, but definitely improved a lot since release and things are going forward.

I had a lot of that, too. I delivered a pile of diagnostics packs to the developers and the last version of their eyetracker software fixed a number of reliability problems. Though, it's still a known issue that the device is a bit power hungry and the USB implementation seems to be a bit "special". I went through a number of USB ports on my computer after the last patch, to see where it works. Connecting to a USB2 controller which next to the device only serves keyboard and mouse (two devices which use very little power) solved those problems for me.

If you still have problems, contact their support. They are helpful and care for things.

Yes the UP pitch has a problem. Same for TrackIR and the DOWN pitch. TrackIR is mounted on top looking down at you, so will lose track of the dots when you look down too far. Tobii is mounted below, looking up at you, so it will lose track of your eyes when you look up.

The problem is that the Tobii only has ONE curve for all axises ("axii/axes") so if you try to make the UP pitch more sensitive so you don't need to move your head too much, all other axis are sensitive too.

I guess the people at Tobii figure that we'd all use gaze to "help" with the up pitch, cuz if you did turn on gaze tracking (and went into DYNAMIC mode for head tracking) you can actually move the screen up a little bit with your head, and use your eyes to move "the rest of the way".

As for 3 DOF vs 6 DOF... honestly that's not important to me.... there are only 2 Axis that are important to me - X and Y... anything more is a bonus. I hate it when I shift in my seat I need to recenter TrackIR cuz the tracking is too precise, and the view will skew when I slouch :) In fact for TrackIR I am lucky I have the old TrackIR 3 - only have X and Y axis to worry about. I could have bought the Vector addon to make it go 6 DOF but I didn't. The view skews enough already when I slouch in my seat

Tobii in fact has LESS features and less configuration options compared to TrackIR. Just thought you might wanna know. I have both and I use both. Tobii 4C is just my newest "toy".
