I'm looking at buying a head or eye tracker, but don't know which one is the best. It seems that the Tobii has more features and doesn't require strapping something to your head. That's a big plus.
I'd imagine that there are things like the Kinect out there or at least in development. I don't want the Rift because I don't want to wear something that large on my face and I also like to be able to use my keyboard.
I guess I have some research to do.

Aye. Not having to attach anything to the head is one of the big advantages. The drawbacks are that people with really big monitors usually report problems and that you have to be a bit close to the screen for my taste. Other things to mention would be that the device went through a number of reliability problems, which seems to have been fixed by the last patch of the eyetracker software. (But it really needs to be connected to a USB2.0 port, it can run into issues when on a USB3 port, it seems. ) That being said, i have to compliment their support people, i had a lot of contact to them since i bought this device, as i found a number of problems, but they were patient, analysed and got things fixed.
.
At the moment i still have to note one issue specific to this game: the head tracking works fine in three directions: left, right and down. But as pilot you often want to bring you head up all the way. You might run into a limit there, where you'd wish the device would allow you to go up further. This already has been improved a lot and the developers promised to still bring another upgrade to the tracking algorythm there, to allow even more head movement.
.
So things are not prefect yet, but definitely improved a lot since release and things are going forward.

I have my 4C set to face tracking only. Works well, but I have issues with the device losing connectivity while playing Elite. Tobii is pretty good about bug fixes though.

I had a lot of that, too. I delivered a pile of diagnostics packs to the developers and the last version of their eyetracker software fixed a number of reliability problems. Though, it's still a known issue that the device is a bit power hungry and the USB implementation seems to be a bit "special". I went through a number of USB ports on my computer after the last patch, to see where it works. Connecting to a USB2 controller which next to the device only serves keyboard and mouse (two devices which use very little power) solved those problems for me.

If you still have problems, contact their support. They are helpful and care for things.
