HBM memory is to create 3D memory chips (memory stacking) with 4 layers instead of flat chips in one layer. The interest is to allow a higher density chips, lower consumption (40% according to SK Hynix) and higher performance (65% according to the specialist memory) compared to GDDR5. Whereof remove a throttling core for graphics performance. http://www.overclock.net/t/1488641/next-r9-r7-graphics-to-use-hbm
