Hardware & Technical The 'official' flight gadget thread! Let me show you its features!

As suggested, let’s keep one thread with all the flight gadgets in for easy discussions.

I will add more to the OP when I get on my PC.

I've got the BRD-F3 (Baur also does a few other models), and the VKB - both awesome.

Just keep in mind the Baur now is working with Virpil, so he has not got the time to build the BRD gear naymore, he will still sell it, but only as a "DIY" kit (which is how I bought mine). This will save you about $50, and will give you appreciation for the guys ingenuity and talent. However, if you are not familiar with a tool kit, and don't like putting stuff together yourself, it will likely be off the table (for now).

I suspect there will be a set of pedals from Virpil shortly that will have the BRD-F3 design at it's heart.

Thanks, Lysander! Can we rename the thread to "The 'official' flight gadget thread" or something? ;)

CH Products HOTAS and MFG Crosswids owner here. The Crosswinds are bloody fantastic. Only downside is that they need to be either placed so they are pushed against a wall or need stable mounting.

But I'm eying the VKB and Virpil stuff very closely. While the CH Products hardware is great and sturdy and positively perfect for Elite Dangerous, its electronics are outdated and it lacks analogue inputs for more serious simulations. E.g. analogue inputs for fuel mixture, radiator, propeller angle etc.

If I am to upgrade the HOTAS however, I'll be looking to stick to one manufacturer. ATM Virpil and VKB look like the options, once both have their throttle available. It's still up in the air how their throttles will turn out, but I'm aslo entirely unsure which Joystick would be the go to option. It looks like the VKB's Modern Combat Grip Pro is more versatile, but I have no idea how VKBs and Virpil's gimpals compare.

Then there's the issue of being able to get my hands one one of these Joysticks in the first place. The European VKB shop is a trainwreck. It lists about half the hardware that the American shop does to begin with. Specifically the Gunfighter Pro with MCG isn't listed at all. Then lots of their hardware is listed as "0,00€"? Unavailable then?

It's great he is working with an established provider, that will also make it easier for us to get the gear by "normal" channels.

Official eh :D well I can humbelly ask a mod to change it, but no garanties.

Oh Boy, you learn something every.Single.Day!!!

Thanks.

Thanks for renaming the thread! :D I'm sorry, but I must (grammar 'politically right oriented person' incoming...) just as to apply the newly learned skill: You probably want to show us its features. ;)

Is that your set of Slaw Viper in the OT? These look slick, if somwehat overcomplicated. Whereas the MFG Crosswinds have one CNC machined piece of composite material for each pedal, the Viper's pedals alone consist of what looks like a dozen metal pieces held together by two dozen screws. :O Still. Slick.

On to drooling at the potential future throttle options...

The throttles look interesting, wishFD would implement “press and hold”functionality, so that flick switches were useful. Cargo scoop, landing gear and hardloints are perfect examples of flick switch usage...

Wouldn't a manufacturer's configuration software allowing to change the toggle switches' behavior to firing the same button exactly once when reaching each position also make them compatible with Elite?

Granted, one might again have to rely on per-software profiles for the hardware. Also activating a function any other way, e.g. via side panel, would invert the switch's function... :/

Yeah you’re right, however I can only see and edit some of the headline on the iPad, for some reason I can’t move to the end of the headline, need my PC to do that, will do it when i’m back.

Wait what? I do use them in Hold. all of those you just mentioned. Actually minus the Hardpoints.
I'm not at my Gaming PC at the moment but I use the EAC and Autopilot switches in the base of the WartHog throttle and from the option menu I put their function in Hold mode...

Handbuild throttle consols in metal, just like slaw these take time so you have to wait a long time before you can get one.

Another builder who can build almost anything you want.

I have only so much rep juice per person...

Odd, I thought I could only do this for FA off/on and a select few others? Maybe it has been too long since I looked and need to check again...

Well damn you. :p Since I've dipped my toes briefly in Il2 BoX, having all the analogue controls of these aircraft conveniently available rather than mapped to digital inputs is a rather tempting proposition. Their website currently says they're not taking any other "subscriptions" (order presumably?) before March 2018 however. Which makes them just as immediately available as the VKB/Virpil throttl options - not at all.

Once all of these are eventually available however, I'm totally undecided. I'll want to move away from the CH Pro Throttle, as it lacks further analogue inputs, which make flight sims more comfortable. But which to go for?

Virpil's & VKB's renders both have modern throttle designs, presumably also better suited for two engine jet fighters. They also offer a number of dials which might well eumlate analogue inputs for WW2 sims. And at least Virpil's throttle is announced to come with a mini stick option, which I'd want for Elite. On the other hand - these custom WW2 throttles look absolutely stunning and being designed for Il2 BoX functions should make it an absolute breeze to play Il2. In the end, I'll probably decide between the Virpil throttle (as VKB's EU shop and product availability is almost a insult to potential EU customers) and something like that metal WW2 throttle.

On the other hand, my PC really could do well with an upgrade to be able to enjoy these modern sims on triple screens without having to dial down the settings too much. :-/

Go for the PC upgrade bro, these flight accessories are just a big black hole swallowing your money, believe me i know what I'm talking about.

I got a dream, one set for modern flight controls, and one for WWX cockpits.

I didn't inform my wife, as I believe it's better to ask for forgiveness than ask for permission.
