Open/Coop, OPEN/PVE strictly is not possible.




Frontier can not enforce mutual agreement, nor can they by any means, prevent harassment or griefing. Glad we worked that out by now.
Yaffle, may as well put this thread to its well deserved rest, if OPEN/PvE is the quintessence and agreement for those sought out alternatives in here. There is no alternative to OPEN play as is. Nor can OPEN/PVE provide safety for like minded peaceful commanders.

We had this mode by now if Frontier only knew how to make it.

As you all know, I appreciate PvP in OPEN, although I, for now see no need to kill other players by myself. The statement above is not geared to belittle other views of the matter. However, I follow simple logic and believe in what I say is true.

So many posts about it will pop up. So they mega threaded it. Problem with mega threads like this. Is youre boned if you delete it or stop it. And youre boned if you keep it up. The best option is to keep it up until FDEV does something about it.

But think about that for a second. If they take it down. And General is flooded with Open/Private/Solo discussion. That means there is a problem with this part of the game for the players.

If there wasn't a problem. There wouldn't be a mega thread to begin with.

Food for thought. Some people feel there needs to be changes. Others have no problems with how it works.

However something will happen because of it sooner or later. There is obviously a "demand" for it. People do want change or we wouldn't be here.

So yeah, in my past experiences. And I've played lots of games. There will be balancing around the issue.

I've followed this thread for some time, and just have one idea to contribute. The difficulty of coding for an "Open PvE" mode has been noted: clipping, weapon effects, all kinds of damage would have to be flagged with player/NPC information in a way which hasn't been done before. As a software writer, I think it would be horrible to do and unlikely to turn out bug-free, but I wouldn't do it like that. I'd use the much simpler "Mobius method": do as much damage as you like, but get thrown out for it.

The game is already able to tell me if I get "destroyed by CMDR Bloggs". In "Open PvE" mode I would add two actions at that screen: (1) The rebuy the destroyed player faces gets greatly reduced; (2) CMDR Bloggs gets barred from "Open PvE" for a few weeks.

Job done?

SDC didn't care about anyone affecting their faction, not to mention they apparently didn't even know they had one, or understood how the BGS works.

The key to understanding PVP in Elite is that the more you PVP, the more you lose in the BGS without some pretty rigorous planning and coordination.

Murderhobos and Lulzbunnies don't really apply here of course, the simple need to see player explosions is fulfilled simply by generating player explosions.

I can promise you. They know how it works. There are only 15-20 of them. They would lose a bgs battle in sheer numbers alone. Not only that, they aint gonna spend their time on a time vs time battle.

Wish some of the guys would man up around here and fight back. Its the community's fault they hold their place like they do. Take back open for yourselves. Nothing wrong with getting your hands dirty.

It is quite clear that I, and many others, quite simply play a different game - the only commonality is that we have Elite Dangerous as the designated client.

I don't want to get my hands dirty - which is why I have gloves and a shovel

Just the whiners that clicked open knowing what can happen to them by playing in it. There are other options to begin with.

Those are the people I am specifically talking to.

If you just enjoy PVE on a PVE style server/mode whatever. Thats cool. more power to you.

Frontier can only speculate as to how many players may not appreciate changes to these features.

While there is an obvious demand for features with mandatory PvP, Frontier would also seem to be well aware that the majority of players don't get involved in PvP.

Therein lies the dilemma....

Rename the game modes. to SOLO/PVP/PVE. Remove mobius as a private group. FDEV Govern it their-self. Add flags for the PVE group like wow did if people really want the option to fight.

Limit private groups to the size of a wing. GG.

Its all implied and controlled. And people can still shoot stuff with their friends and not fight over NPC kills.

Problem still lies within the BGS. As all servers are connected here. And World of Warcraft had none of that. Just linear game-play. And they DO NOT want to separate it. Which is totally cool. Its a neat Idea. Glad im part of it. So there is some trial and error with something new like this.

We just have to sit back and enjoy the ride.

No, you'll find me saying that the punishment won't be immediate nor overly harsh and should be reversible. Or, that they should just leave open as is, and leave it to those that enjoy that environment. Look around, you've been around long enough to have an idea how I roll.

The removal of Private Groups seems rather capricious - given that they have existed in the published design information from the outset, as has Solo, as have (potential) multiple Open groups (modes).

Better just to add the obviously lacking Open-PvE mode. It would take a bit of managing though - which, I'd expect, is why it has not happened.

Whether the BGS, the panmodal nature of PowerPlay, CGs and Factions, constitutes a problem or a feature is rather a matter of opinion.
