The Open v Solo v Groups thread

Many of us don't measure a Commanders skill in Elite by their combat ability, after all that's only 1 of 6 available ranks outside of the three reputation ranks.
How many gankers can land a Beluga at HD 148937 first try? 😉

I watched a CG camper struggle to land his gunship (? Some medium pad Core Dynamics thing) in a Coriolis for several minutes once. It was like one of those videos where someone is repeatedly trying to reverse into a parking spot.

If Frontier were to create an Open only mode, complete with its own CMDR and galaxy state (not shared with players in the existing three modes) that'd be an improvement for those seeking Open only and those who don't want to play among those who don't want to share the galaxy with others.
They could just copy existing cmdr data and split even now.

They could but I somehow doubt they will - as when the game was split between Live and Legacy they avoided the issue of which galaxy would be canon by simply deciding that there would be no story, CGs, etc. in Legacy (but it still has the BGS and Powerplay) whereas Live is the canon galaxy with the developing story and CGs.

If the Live galaxy were to be split now then there'd be an issue as to which one was canon.

Any group and solo should blaze their own trial. Or simply that most popular one - called Open.

They wouldn't need to what they have already suits most folks, there's a mode for everyone.
And just heading off topic your forum name brings back some old memories as i was privileged to have actually trained with Sosai Masutatsu Oyama before he passed away.
Good times.

Which Open? In this scenario the new "Open Only" Open, with its own galaxy to affect, is in addition to the existing tri-modal mode-shared galaxy.

While we have been told, in late 2018, that the majority of players played in Open (at least some of the time), with the ability to mode switch at will, there's no data on what proportion of the player-base would choose to lock their CMDR and progress to Open only.

To be fair without any hard data i would dispute that Open is the most popular mode especially with PGs like Mobius having large numbers.

The statement about a majority being in Open was before they eliminated board-flipping (which tended to randomise people's mode choices) and before squadrons (many of which created their own PGs). Just from the people I know who play now, I also doubt that the majority are in Open at any given time. The important thing is just that players choose the mode which is best for what they want to do though.

The majority is most assuredly in open.
It's questionable if open has a higher population than all PG combined.
But open vs any single PG or solo is pretty much guaranteed to be the majority simply because it's the first option.
Any hard numbers on that are FDs secret though.

We have a controlling systems very close to one of the starting systems, the whole area (7-8 systems nearby) is flooded by new players on a constant basis.

Usually I like to visit those systems and send greetings like "o7" "welcome to kumo space" etc to the new comers.

Live Open. I dont mind if anyone, even who only played solo will keep the progress and gear with Open.

So why are you so sure that Open has the most players without any current evidence?

For an explorer in the black there would be little reason not to choose open (save getting a hi-res screenie).
In the Bubble there's little reason to unless visiting engineers or the CG, even then it seems only Deciat attracts the seal clubbers now and for myself the only times I tend to go to solo now tend to be when it involves landing on a megaship.

Im the other way around, i see no reason to go in Open at all in the bubble or in the Black, there's no one out there any way so makes no difference and reduces any risk of a muppet to zero.
