Except it actually is now though... FDEV are letting it die through lack of investment and vision. All they're trying to do is squeeze every last penny out of players via paint jobs and other cosmetics. Realisation is starting to hit even the most fanboy circles now though. There's hardly anyone playing, hardly any news from FDEV, negative sentiment everywhere. Yeah...

Sad really I used to love ED, played regularly every week for years... open was busy with things going on. Some awesome times pre 2020.

If you dont play, doesnt mean nobody is playing.
Or maybe are you still in Legacy? Most players are in Odyssey these days.

Mandatory steam charts following, but before that, the current 4000 average hourly concurrent players is better than most of 2016, comparable to about 5 months of 2017, again better than half of 2018, again comparable to half of 2019, etc
Basically it's in line with their normal trend of player involvement.

Yawn. Is it dead yet?

At least one thing is sure: Some day somebody will turn off the lights. And at that point I am sure somebody will pop up and say: Told you so! The game will not live forever, and so it is just a matter of repeating the "ded game" prediction over and over until it is finally true.

I am almost certain there are forum members here whose only purpose for being here is to be ready to pop up and say that the day the servers shut down...could be next year, after we never know what's coming, nuclear winter? Could be ten or twenty years, but they will be ready!

Keep coping guys... we're 9 years into the '10 year plan'. Codebase is ancient, support for various platforms cut, no news about development ever (narrative updates only), no new ships in 5 years. Don't worry though, I'm sure (proper) atmospheric landings, ship interiors, EVA and the Panther Clipper are imminent.

Have any of the sandwich board crowd predicted an actual date for shutting down the servers? I need to prepare an 'It's not the end of Elite' party for the day after.

Hello Darkness my old friend ...............

I really don't understand why this is so difficult. Forget BGS, that's not the issie, it's powerplay that needs fixing.

The bulk of the activity in powerplay involves 1)Undermining opposition fation's system while 2)Defending your control systems from being undermined.

So how do you perform action 2.(defend) when action 1.9undermine) is being performed by players in solo/pg? ...HOW?

Simple answer - the undermining materials being hauled need to be flagged such that they must be hauled in open only to count towards the undermining effort. If the hauler at any time changes game modes while hauling then the cargo gets tagged and no longer counts toward the undermining effort while every other aspect of the cargo remains the same. That means you can perform the undermining action in solo if you wish but the materials you haul should not count towards undermining. Simple as that.

...the reason I no longer participate in powerplay (and subsequently rarely ever even play the game any more) is no different to why I have no interest in watching a football game where the two teams play on separate pitches and the winner is determined by whoever kicks the most goals into an undefended goal, without the two teams ever interacting with each other. What's the point in that? well, that's exactly the game we have right now wrt powerplay.

At one constant rhythm, right into their ear.

Last week there was a massive expansion fight Federation vs. Aisling. Aisling won but refreshingly they did play more gamely than you might be used to, lots of hauling done in open. Admittedly they might not dare if the outcome was more in the balance, but the crazy thing - they enjoyed it. Maybe they'll get hooked. Can't promise you anything but things do change. It was always a cultural issue as much as anything.

If Frontier isn’t prepared to tie themselves to dates when they have all the info available, I don’t think it’s fair to expect the sandwich board crowd (how old are you ;) ) to do better.

ED won’t go down in a blaze of glory, it’ll go down in a meh of indifference.
