Honestly it was rarely even that. 10-20 platinum was my usual depending on how much they had.

I broke in my HOTAS against a wing of 3 that declined to pay, I still cringe at the recording since I can see all the times I fat-fingered my binds and otherwise messed up.

It's something - as it expresses a disinterest in the content offered by the attacker.
Then fly in Solo, where you can avoid piracy......oh wait piracy is there too

Depends how they want to play the game - for some the ganker mini-game is a tediously predictable waste of limited game time.
I thought we are talking about piracy now, or is it all ganking still?

.... or block after the end of the encounter and move on. As mentioned, the content that some offer is not to everyone's taste - and those offering the content are optional, even in Open (on a case by case basis).
Although its up to them, blocking because they were pirated is, well, a bit mental considering NPCs do it as well....

Not just that, but the lack of concentrating factors for players to encounter each other outside of supercruise. Even CGs are mainly a supercruise gauntlet.

Absolute peak time pirating was when the double-painite spot in the hyades sector was the meta mining location, and the Borann triple-LTD spot before carriers. They provided a location where you could encounter and hunt down other players outside of supercruise, and while Borann was more busy the painite spots were ideal hunting grounds because they generally weren't busy enough for it to be worth showing up to gank people in supercruise, and most of the miners spent most of their time in the rings themselves then high-waked out of the system so gankers couldn't catch them on the way out either.

Those were the times when I'd be able to drift up to someone, pop the scanner, and yarrharrfiddlededee in comms to try and make it entertaining for them as I demanded a frankly pointlessly tiny tribute for making their day more interesting.

Sometimes they logged out on the spot.
Sometimes they logged back in on the spot and got a volley of missiles for their troubles, arrrrrr.
Sometimes they saw that I was in a T7 and decided to fight and that was where the real fun began.
In ages past I gave ideas about expanding the stations drop zone based on BGS factors but the usual's had a bit of a moment about encountering gameplay....

Is it still naming and shaming if the CMDR in question puts his stuff on YT and you say something positive? Just in case, I will not name the CMDR in question, but I stumbled on some pirate videos that really made me chuckle. The CMDR pulled random people from SC in Sidewinders and other small seemingly underpowered ships, did the RP spiel of "gimme your cargo, arrrr!", but demanding one, and only one, ton of the cheapest cargo. In most cases some PvP followed, because the other party goes "lol, Sidewinder", and after they got a bloody nose (not destroyed) they gave up the ton, even if it was one limpet, and everyone went (or limped) their way. And it looked as if, in the end, everyone envolved enjoyed the encounter.

Stuff like this is awesome. To make this work, the pirate would probably announce himself before the interdiction so the target doesn't bolt immediately, and it would rely on the interdictee to stay around to play along (or underestimate the interdictor). But still... that would be the kind of PvP encounter I probably could enjoy even as the "victim".

They arnt real pirates, i can avoid Npcs whilst scoffing a chorley cake in one hand, coffee in another and a woofer siting on my lap!

You should see my Npc block list! Gankers all of them!!!

I've noticed an interesting overlap between those who reject all shortcuts to reduce the game's grind, and those who consider ganking a waste of their precious time.

Indeed - there's no sense in suggesting flying in Solo to avoid NPC piracy as it exists in all three game modes.
I thought we are talking about piracy now, or is it all ganking still?
It's up to each player what level of forced interaction they are prepared to accept - and if the attacker has no obligation to provide fun for the target when forcing an interaction upon said target, the target has no obligation to provide fun for the attacker in any way.

NPC pirates give up after an interdiction win by the intended target - and they're not likely to just blow up the target for lolz.

Then why is piracy seen as an excuse in Open to block people?

Its making excuses really. NPCs are far too weak and have virtually no places to ambush people.

And IIRC NPC pirates will open fire if you don't do what they say.

It's a form of forced interaction that can be viewed as parasitic and unwelcome.

It's the challenge that Frontier choose to offer, not the challenge that some players want to be forced on other players.

Likely - however they don't enjoy the interdiction advantage that players do - nor are their ships necessarily engineered for speed to hunt down those who run for them if in the same normal space instance.

The opposite is true of some players, i.e. they want to progress through engineering as fast as possible to get to the "good bit" - PvP.

Even when NPCs do it?

I get the firm impression some want a bus simulator in space. Sadly Open is not this.
