THE OUTER LIMITS - by Moira Sheehan
I've been re reading the old Elite Lore and since we are all forum addicts I thought I would pose you a moral question.
Imagine you are not who you are with your lovely job, family and friends etc, but your a seasoned pilot making their living by exploring deep space and your often away from all civilisation for several months at a time. This is all in a Universe where slavery is a fact of life and will carry on regardless of your contribution or otherwise.
If so and your only alternative was the same as the pilot in the story, i.e to take a slave girl/boy for company or rely purely on VR from your ships data banks what would you choose.
It could be torturous to be completely alone for months on end in deep space even with advance VR to keep you amused. And you could always treat them better than most masters and give them their freedom after a few tours if you wanted.
Or alternatively just accept that is how the universe is, and trade in your girl/boy every tour for a bit of variety.
