The Planet Zoo Community Chit-Chat

Really cool. Must be awesome to be there in Person. It looks so natural. I wish we could have Jeeps in Planet Zoo without Rails (but I guess ours are self driving, so they need those) and also put a Educator in the Front

Fun fact: originally the safari was going to have a storyline about you looking for a lost elephant calf after its mom was killed by poachers but unfortunately a month or so before opening test audiences thought it was too gruesome and sad for children so it was removed. There’s still remnants of the story in the queue with a poster that says meet big red and her calf little red

It's already a decidedly not-zoo style area. If anything, it's styled more like a county fair. In fact, I don't think there's any animals kept there, or if there are it's maybe a mundane crocodilian and/or waterfowl. It has two rides as its central attractions, a kid-focused wild mouse coaster and a dark motion ride themed around the movie Dinosaur, easily one of the park's best. I understand why they want to move away from such an old, obscure Disney film being a focal point in favor of a newer and more popular one, but at the same time it feels incredibly soulless to step away from highlighting extinct species whatsoever in the push for more IP-based areas. Even a few decades ago Disney was still putting out original rides, like Animal Kingdom's Expedition Everest, but within the past decade everything has been disgustingly IP-focused. It's especially disappointing to see in Animal Kingdom and Epcot, two parks that were meant to celebrate parts of the world that aren't Disney IPs.

Anyway to answer your question, the area is called Dinoland USA and there's tons of pics on Google. The most compelling area from a conservation standpoint is the queue to the Dinosaur ride.
Yea they have American crocodile some cranes and turtoises. (Animals that were around and closely related to the time of the dinosaurs) personally I want them to keep the area based on extinct species and just update it and modernize the Dino land USA carnival aesthetic to be more like the Dino institute in the queue for the ride. Or theme it to Cenozoic life

This is the mural I mentioned earlier. It goes from most ancient exctincions on the left to more recent on the right and on the right edge of the mural is the Javan rhino, Phillipine eagle and other critically endangered species that are really close to extinction without conservation efforts

I'm taking a drivers license at 24 among 17 year olds and its stressful and awkward but nice to finally do it
😕 Also still need to do that

I absolutely love this. Like it how there's even a Diplocaulus on the left Side🙂 (at least it looks like it could be one. A little bit hard to tell with the Picture Quality)

It is! :) even though it’s outdated with its dinosaur and pterosaur depiction I remember how much of an impact this mural had on me as a child. It only strengthened my love for animals and conservation

West, actually. I'm from Cologne :)
Hey, my story takes place in cologne - I might torture you with some research questions once in a while now. :D I'm from Hamburg.
Seems like we have some things in common in writing, too. I also switch POV and my stories get incredibly long always. I don't know, I just like to accompany characters for longer and see them develope. And I like some fun or comfort scenes once in a while that aren't always neccessary for the plot. And so far I haven't edited anything 😂 I promised my best friend to publish one day. She is a published author. But honestly? Seeing what all comes with it, I just don't see it being worth the struggle.

Feel free to do so! I've grown up close to Cologne, so basically spent all my life here so far. If you have any questions, just shoot them at me. 😁

Yes, same in all regards. Getting people to read your stuff just seems like an extreme amount of burdensome work that doesn't feel worth it unless a) you want to make your living with it or b) it has always been your dream to do that.
And even then – I know myself well enough that if people actually read my stories, I would check out what they think about it, and be depressed and frustrated at any negative feedback. 😂
But hey, if you ever do publish after all, make sure to let me know!

Wow, just looked it up. This needs to be preserved and not replaced with something else. Really hope they will keep it

It really is an incredible ride, especially when the yeti animatronic at the top is working. It was closed during my last visit back in March, unfortunately. Thankfully it's not in the area receiving an overhaul.

It's unlike anything else I've ever seen. I'd imagine it's arguably the best safari experience you can get short of actually going to Africa. It all feels so seamless, too. The boundaries are so well hidden that it genuinely feels like the lions, elephants, antelope, mandrills, hippos, crocs, etc etc are all living together.

I'm dying to go back to Animal Kingdom already. But just as nice as the park is, the Animal Kingdom Lodge is right there with it. We didn't stay there (well outside of our budget for this trip), but my wife and I spent a couple hours there because we got dinner reservations (amazing btw). They have an incredible number of hoofstock and birds at the lodge, which you can see from your room or from countless balconies, or even the restaurant. Seeing an addax walk right by the window while having dinner was an unforgettable experience.

Are you sure this was canned before the ride opened? I very distinctly remember there being a plot to the ride involving saving the baby elephant from poachers in past visits (most recent prior to this year was 2012). It certainly wasn't there this year, but I'm almost certain it was before.

I as well have that memory but according to all sources it was removed before it opened

I remember that aswell, I think at least in my earlier 2009 trip. The following years maybe after 2012 the ride story seemed to have been tamed to a more basic African safari. There's more of the guide shouting at people to sit down than whatever story is left these days 🤣

Already wondered if there is something in between I didn't notice or if the Cheetahs are so well fed that they wouldn't even want to go near the Springboks

Found a handy website describing the history of the habitat design of the safari area. Like I thought it uses a mix of natural barriers and electric fences

@Fabian, yes my goal is to create a unique story. Lots of wars, betrayal, legacies and dynasties, too.

Actually, when I see something I'm nature I particularly like, I try to figure out some way to implement it. Most of the species in my story are based off of animals. After designing a species, I base their traits and home off of them. For example, the Fugu are a sea dwelling, pufferfish-like race.
Another example are the Kayák (pronounced "kuh-yak"), a saurian race resembling raptors with a nose horn, tail spikes, and color changing abilities much like a chameleon. In my story, saurians are species that resemble reptiles but are warm blooded.

But anyways, yeah, it's really fun to base aliens off of something that already exists and to tweak it a bit

Expected that Zebras might fight each other. Especially if they should have had multiple Stallions. But didn't expect that they would also attack the Vehicles. Makes me wonder how big those Vehicles are. Aren't they at least a bit bigger than normal Cars?
