The Planetary Circumnavigation Club

Congratulations Mengy,

07

I am curious about your distance traveled vs. refuels, if you don't mind.

Did you refuel with standard synthesis? What was your average throttle speed (best guess obviously - full, half, one-quarter, etc.)? Were you running with all systems on or off?

I currently have about 16 refuels available on board and I am not looking to hunt materials on my current expedition. This is kind of a lark thing that I want to do in addition to the BPE that I am doing right now and I am still looking for a moon that has under 200km radius (I actually may hold out to find one as close to <150km radius as possible), so I am not pausing much for material gathering.

Congrats again and mahalo for any info you can provide.

Standard refuels every time. I turned off the shields, distributor, data scanner, and turret to conserve fuel when I wasn't using them. I had the throttle pegged most of the time, only pulling it back when the terrain got very rough or when I was sightseeing. Again though, the salvage stops really slowed me down, lots of time spent there shuttling cargo back and forth to the ship.

Circumnavigationing a planet/moon is something i have thought about doing since the release of Horizons, but always been a little scared to actually do it. But this and Nick Sticks thread have been an inspiration, and as of now i have atleast started this journey.

Target i have choosen is 366km Rocky (with little bit of Metal) moon over 7000 ly from Sol. Marker points my starting location (inside a crater, what is inside a bigger crater), and circular target is my first greater waypoint). Second picture is a flyby shot to give a better overview of the moon (i have left some interesting features offscreen :p , to be honest system map surface map preview doesnt do a justice to this moon)

Day 1 is done, here are a few pics:
Exiting my ASP and a first few meters on the way:

An edge of the crater is on sight. Little way to go:

End of Day 1, reached a little canyon. Turn left, or turn right?:

Same position from different angle, this time with my ship recalled:

Will probably turn left since i have drifted too much to the right. And will probably follow along the canyon to see where it leads (and keeping an eye on the surface map to not drift too far from waypoint):

First day drove 53km. Might start my own travel log thread on exploration forum - depends how actively i will continue to log it (most active scenario is a pic or two per session).

Bravo Kris, I salute your endeavour. With 53km down and ~2250km to go you're starting out on a pretty epic journey, and on a beautifully scenic planet too by the looks of those screenshots. Keep us posted re: your progress (even if you're only going to post occasional updates I'd recommend starting your own thread - you'll never forget this journey and it's nice to have a permanent record of it).

I got to be honest, with how awesome the planets have turned out in 3.0 I just might be doing this again fairly soon. Planets look so incredible now, the scenery would be amazing.

Yup, got to admit that Kris' screenshots just make me really want to be doing that again. I've got a 3.0 todo list a mile long but as soon as I've ticked off a few of the more interesting items I think I'll be headin back out.

Nice looking planet. Good luck in your travels Cmdr.

Godspeed Cmdr Kris!

And that moon, beautiful yet barren scenery...looks just like the Moon. These first days, playing 3.0 almost feels like playing ED 2. :)

....aaaand, I'm hearing the call of the void again....

Cautionary tale: don't go faster than the escape velocity for your planet!

VERY IMPORTANT EDIT: This wasn't me! This is all CMDR Timmy Brabston. Read about it more here: https://www.reddit.com/r/EliteDangerous/comments/81014h/srv_distress_signal_im_floating_away_help/

In my haste to make sure this amazing video didn't fly under the radar, I didn't include that critical bit of info. Apologies to everyone, especially CMDR Timmy Brabston.

Beautiful, just beautiful man!

P.S. I'll put that down as a FAIL then. :p

Edit: now added to the OP.

HALT! That wasn't me! That's CMDR Timmy Brabston's video. In my haste to make sure people saw his awesome tale, I neglected to make that clear. I'll edit my post to make that clearer, please edit OP to give the right CMDR credit!

Whoops. OK - should now be corrected (and in my Best of Forum thread too). Let me know if I've missed anything.

In other circumnavigation news ... Nick Sticks has completed his epic circumnavigation of Eol Prou FB-I b25-50 1!

Excellent! I've created an entry for you in the OP. Do you want to share the name of your chosen planet or would you prefer to keep it secret?
Right now i keep it a secret. If i can drive around it (so far day 2 and enjoying it greatly :)), i hope i can also get a "discovered by" tag (for moon, don't care for system). But this will probably take 2-3 months, and over 7000 ly (from SOL) is not that far from bubble, so i will not take it as granted and honestly it is not THAT important. :) But right now keeping name of the moon a secret.

Were you on your way to Colonia?
There are several stations now on that route that you should be able to stake your claim with rather than going 7000ly back to the bubble.

Were you on your way to Colonia?
No, tried to avoid most obvious travel "roads". :)

Discovered tag is not that important, so not sweating over that. If it comes, it comes, if not, then not (and big props to those who scan the whole system with all the planets and moons). But atleast now keeping my odds as high as i can :D

Food for thought ...

On my aborted attempt to navigate a pole to pole route at Beagle Pount 2, I brought the Lakon Type 6 down to form a base camp each evening. Seriously tempted to do a route with just the SRV though. Convoy anyone?

Actually, if 3 or 4 people were going to do a circumnavigation it would be quite fun to all start on the same day and do the same planet. I wouldn't want it to be a race but having a bunch of SRVs doing it with waypoints and occasional meetups - it could be like a proper expedition! Anyway, we're rather taking over Kris' travelogue thread here. I suggest that any further discussion of a group circumnavigation attempt should be taken over to the Planetary Circumnavigation Club thread.

Fail with intent to succeed! I'll be back there to put a ring around it someday hopefully sooner than later. I won't suffer such humiliation again[cool]

Your humiliation is not without merit. The accompanying video and story are epic. Nigh-legendary, so sayeth I.

A grand attempt, CMDR. 07
