The Planetary landing and planetside missions discussion Thread

So there Space cricket what about ...

Pretty sure PL will be instanced. Possibly from the planetary body exclusion zone that we hit when we fly too close to planets atm, we'll be able to manually instance ourselves into the atmospheres "exclusion zone" and fly down to the planets surface, at least that's how I see PL functioning. So "kind of" seamless PL ;)

Yes that's most likely how they'll do it - after all we will have to drop out of SC into normal flight at some point. I just hope they can do it in a smoother way than we have now so that the "loading screens" aren't so obvious.

My only concern with PL is in regards to seamless transition into the atmosphere. Having to drop into a nav target or somesuch whilst the assets are generated would be a serious let-down.

I wouldnt imagine that to be a large stumbling block. It already happens in NMS and in ED when you drift into a planetary ring.

Im interested on how they are going to generate content when a planet has several billion inhabitants!

Given the multiplayer nature of the game, it seems certain to me that the planets will be instanced. The loading screen could be, for exemple, your cockpit surrounded by flames during the atmospheric reentry. As for airless moons... You're asking too much. Shoo shoo.

I would imagine that planetary landings will work similarly to the current setup (normal space = surface, supercruise = flying), but the increased workload in areas with high population density will be...interesting. Right now, the limited amount of ships we get in any one instance is fair enough - spacecraft are expensive, and space is big. Life, on the other hand, is cheap, and people seem to prefer living in close proximity to one another. How will that translate to a game with P2P architecture? I'd like to think that the developers have a definite plan, but the looks of terror visible in that "future of the game" video FDEV put out a while back when this subject was mentioned were not reassuring!

Perhaps Flavien should have sold the engine to someone and moved on - probably saw a bunch of dollar signs in his eyes and tried to go it alone, only to realise he'd bitten off more than he could chew.

They did convert this tech demo into inovae engine which they did try to sell but didn't get any early takers & so have been continuing to dev it with a growing team. It's taking time but I think it will be good once they KS battlescape.

Mabes Dave could buy finished engine for Elite Deadly : )

Yeap FD will probably pull it off pretty good. They always do, it's just they have slightly big delays. But it's OK, as long as i get to one day walk on actual grass. Man my pilot feet need something soft, green and puffy.

The main danger is overexpectation. If people are expecting any civilians at all that would be too much. I am happy to see a distant city and a base you can land at and being able to land away from cities. You dont need to be able to go into the cities or see the people. Thats just overkill. I would much rather see a bit of traffic/bustle around the landing pad. If that gets the planet landings here any faster that would be fine with me.

Seems to be FDs only option. If they do it in a similar fashion to the SC/normal flight transition it shouldn't be so bad. As long as you can still enter and exit the atmosphere where ever you want.

If it came even close to Elite Frontier I'd be happy.

Agreed, if there are cities to see I think it will be more like in the station when we see vehicles coming and going when we are on the landing pads.

I really hope I'm still interested in this game by the time they include planetary landing, if they ever do. Being able to go from a conflict zone in orbit down to a ground battle would be fantastic.

It started off as the engine for the game. Then it was an engine for sale to a 3rd party plus a combat sim. I think development is still continuing though. I was 'hanging out' on the i-Novae (then Infinity) forums when the KS for ED started.

I was on their spouting off about ED when Ashley Barley turned up to mention the ED KS :)

A beautiful looking engine is one thing - being able to present a playable, successful multi-player game is another thing altogether.

This is exactly what i was thinking about too, for planets with athmosphere around. but for the others it will maybe like when you are getting close to an asteroid. Sure it will be difficult with all the data necessary for that but, it's FD we are talking about so, i think they will come with something :D

Any news about planetary landing?

I was just rewatching this video :

And couldn't help but drool at the idea. Though since this video we didn't got any further dev update about this.
I know we're at the dawn of 1.3 and devs are occupied with a lot of things but still : I want to know!

I think we all do. Sadly no one knows. Or rather, the ones who do know aren't saying. About the only thing we do know is that it will be a paid expansion.
