The Planetary landing and planetside missions discussion Thread

I hope we get something like mechs for planetary landings!

1. Mechs could be used for all kinds of things. Mining, Exploring, Killing space creatures. Hard to think that someone in a spacesuite is able to mine a ton of mineral. I also don't like the idea from elite 2, to just place mineral extractors and take them with you, when they are full. That is no gameplay but just boring. Think about mining: you scan the surrounding, find a mineral node, lazer it into pieces, bring the pieces back to your ship. There you have a refinery controllable from the outside of the ship. You put your minerals in, refine them and go out for the next mineral node. Could be pretty funny.

2. Mechs are upgradable. Also thinkable to buy different mech versions. Some that are able to haul bigger amounts of minerals. Some that are better suited for combat.

3. Even on earthlike-planets you should not breath unfiltered air(poison, micro-organisms and so on). So no need for a function to get out of your mech.

4. Jetpacks. You could use your mech to travel within the atmosphere. No need to reallocate your ship all the time. Just fly around, scan, mine and fly back to your ship when the mechs cargo storage is full.

Could be very funny. :)

we need planet landings badly....well first off the abillity to walk around ones ship would be a start, followed by leaving the ship and exploring the hanger...maybey theres a bar in every hanger or a bounty office so we can collect it there as opposed to walls of text all the time.
We need something to do in the existing game first, badly.

Think about what you're suggesting here - "well first off the abillity to walk around ones ship would be a start".

Honestly, if you think the existing occupations and missions are thin, I can guarantee that people will soon get bored of ",walk around ones ship," because what would you do?

Frontier need to finish ED as it stands first. Missions need deepening to actually give tiered intelligent missions. The occupations need some love to give them more depth and skill. And the galaxy in ED needs more content to make general space flight more interesting, and certainly make exploration more varied and interesting.

Then, and only then, IMHO should FD than start bolting on DLCs. My worse nightmare is flying down to a planet, just to pick up box X and then to go off to fly it to Y... repeat...

you should check out evochron mercenary mate....

As an explorer, planetary landings is the feature I would most like to see added to ED. That or the ability to walk around inside your ship and play some billiards or something.

When you're thousands of light years away from civilization, how awesome would it be to have something else to see besides a point in space to scan, or the occasional mining ring/belt.

It wouldn't need to be super complicated at first. Maybe just add a surface map with "hot spots". Landing on these hot spots could allow you to collect metals, mineral, and (if you're on a life sustaining planet) specimens to return and study.

I have a feeling that FDev are going to use a lot they learn from Rollercoaster Planet in the design and optimisation of a planetary landing expansion. I can envisage modules for an outpost, science, farming, resorts, hunting lodges, mining, banks, hangars, space ports, habitation, defence, and then on to wildlife and npc behaviour.

i also want to see first person equipment for exploring equipment, specialised for different environments. Space suits, ATVs, weapons, scanners and defence personal modules. I know some think it would be colony management but the ability to find and then carve out a little patch for yourself. Put in some mechanics for claiming a planet and claim jumping, raiding and defence, big game hunting, mining etc and it could be so much more than just management of the colony. Besides once it is growing why not just do supply runs and allow those mechanics to develop emergent game play.

Same as above for orbital outposts.....

Would love to hear more of when & why from the dev's , when I backed the game got the impression this would occur sometime this year, but a time line would be nice.:)

This but we need a large variety of fire arms, im hoping for 100 of different kinds of rifles, pistols and other cool guns.

External View,Planetary Landings.

I'm loving the new fixed docking computer,it's ace as I can drink my beer while watching me dock now.
As the title of my thread,is there gonna be an external view and planetary landings.Would be nice to have these things added.

External view I think the answer was no. We have the debug camera (Ctrl+alt+space default) but since this is a sim crossed with a game. 3rd person or 3rd ship is not great for sims.

Also planetary landings have been confirmed by DB but obviously its a long project to add so its not going to appear overnight.

There is a debug camera for external 'selfies', etc. FD are dead against a 3rd person view, however, so whilst that may get polished somewhat, don't expect too much.

Planetary landings are expected as a paid expansion.

Planetary landing - Not here yet but...

For those who cannot wait for planetary landing, here is a nice video to give you an impression of the possible future of Elite. It is absolutely stunning! It starts at 5:30. Enjoy :)

I do hope they work on re-entry mechanics in a believable fashion, though. While technically impressive, the guy in that video enters the atmosphere at a speed that'd almost certainly vaporize his ship before it reached the ground.

I think that is the plan, would be a real downer if it was just an instanced transition
I believe the Orca and Federal dropship are both supposed to be atmosphere capable.
I also seem to recall there being some hints on the orca also being submersible, hence it's name I suppose
